I live over in the WKAR/WKZO area, so I was surprised that you can receive it so well in Chicago. I have the CCrane 2E. I listen to Chicago stations a lot - WBBM 780s for news. I am old enough to remember the power rock stations, WLS and WCFL. We listened to those stations in Michigan. I am surprised to see so many music stations around Chicago still on AM.

I really like 👍 the color of the backlight on this. Does this radio 📻 receive only local stations 🚉, or is it a station 🚉 magnet 🧲? Your friend, Jeff.

I like that you focus on AM reception in most of your reviews, since that is of most interest to me, now that SW doesn't seem to have much on it. With the CC Radio, I would also be interested in how good the 2m band reception is, and whether or not there is anything worthwhile to listen to on that.

Tip, ALWAYS DX, or listen 👂 to your stations 🚉 at night. That way, ya can catch those stations 🚉, which are 250+ miles away. Ya might even be able to catch stations 🚉 from halfway around the world 🌎. In some cases, radio 📻 stations 🚉, “stacking”, or “ghosting” may be a problem. That’s when 2 or more stations 🚉 come in on 🔝 of each other, on the radio 📻 dial. Again, your friend, Jeff.

I had the original CC radio and it lasted 7 years.
In the time I had it the radio could not be beat on AM.
It heard stations that Tecsun radios suggested are there,
Its worth the price if you want solid AM reception.
I also thought it was very good on FM.
Good review of a great radio.

It's a shame the prices have gone up on these this year.

I recently purchased a CCrane Radio 3 as a replacement for my Tecsun PL-880. I was expecting the Radio 3 to do a better job at pulling in weak AM signals. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Both radios proved to be equal in performance. However, the Tecsun produces too much bass and not enough midrange to properly re-produce the natural tones of a person's voice. The Radio 3 excels in that respect.
Reception on both radios was phenomenal. Oddly enough, the larger ferrite rod used in the CCrane didn't seem to give it an edge. I wasn't expecting that!
My final thoughts on the Radio 3. It's a very well made radio that will surely provide many years of good listening. But in my scenario, I'm not sure the expense is worth the the difference in sound.

Did you try a day time reception test? My CC Radios are the clear winners during the Day. Evening, even the cheapest portable can keep up with most of the big boys.

@@todderbert I did as you said. It did in fact to a better job than the Tecsun. There was less static and much better voice clarity. The CCrane is definitely made for listening to AM verbal transmissions.

It's my understanding that you must do the alignment procedure (radio aligns itself). This can be found on Radio Jay Allen's website. Not sure if CCrane mentions it in their manual. Todd, do you know how this radio compares to a Zenith 755M/74? Thanks for the great review!

Good during the day compared to other brand radios however I think my GE super radio 2 does a better job during the day with fading signals it doesn't flutter

Great review Todderbert. Have had this on the radar for a while as a worthy digital option to my EP PRO.
Do you ever scan the Ham channel? What do you hear?
Also, an outside daytime scan with the CC 3 might be interesting, as you say.
    Cheers mate. (NZ Fan)

I pick up my local HAM repeaters, which is pretty cool.

Great radios. I’ve had 2 of its predecessors. The weak link on these is the buttons. When the commonly used buttons like the power switch and band buttons start wearing out, it’s a shame. Watch out for letting batteries leak in there too. Reception quality is the best I’ve ever heard.

Can you review the ATS 20
LW SW AM FM SSB radio, show it has a much broader frequency range than commercial radios. It does all the HAM bands on HF 0.5-30 mhz

Have you tried it with the Select-a-Tenna Am Radio Antenna?

    • @todderbert

Yes, it does not effect it much, having a highly tuned 200mm ferrite antenna inside the radio.

Does the Radio 3 have better sound quality for AM talk radio than the 2E or the ep pro?
I don’t really want Bluetooth but if sound quality is noticeably better I might splurge for the 3 over the 2E.
    Thanks.
