In my humble opinion, there has yet to be a christian album that has been able to match the artistic quality of the album Jesus Freak. 5 star record all the way through.
Except that album is a lot older... Most modern fans unfortunately don't know it. I agree that it was phenomenal, but from 1995 until now, there has not been a sonic match.
I agree. It's one of the only albums I've heard where I like every song, and I think each one is expertly written and sung. The album has such a good variety of hip-hop, rock, and everything in between.
I was never into the “awards” stuff. Not that they don’t deserve it. But I know that the truth that they sang/preached had a HUGE impact on my walk with God. I went from a Satanist/atheist to a total Jesus Freak with now a masters degree in Apologetics. Thank you for being faithful!!

+Steel305 WOW....just looked up that album and yeah, it comes VERY close to Jesus Freak. Still gotta say JF tops it due to the cross-genres the album holds. Grudge, Alternative, Rock, Rap-Rock, Soul, Pop-Rock.
Totally agree. Christian music was dabbling into mainstream like never before or since. it's a shame the boys broke up because they did so much to advance the christian music scene into something exciting, new, and that attracted young people who were turned off by the stuffy, hymnal, choir predecessors. im not into the Christian music (nor Christian in general) scene anymore, but here I am, listening to some 90's dc Talk. Saw them live a few times. High energy, good message, great music. It's a shame there isn't this kind of motivation anymore in the Christian music genre. They were blazing trails with flame throwers.
if anyone thinks this was the only "Christian music crossing over into mainstream" hasn't paid much attention to music for the past 20 years, or the 10 years prior. Stryper? Underoath? Skillet? Heck, even from that same time frame, Kirk Franklin, Johnny q Public, Michael W Smith, and others made an impact on mainstream industry.
Jamie Valder , Poor kiddo! You were probably too young to remember when those guys WERE DC talk. Good days...good memories. It was fun being a 90s teenager. Wish you could had been there!
Three of the best and most creative musicians in Christian music. What a shame they've never come back together to make one last album and tour one more time.
The Faith & Fame segment for Toby Mac (it's on youtube) mentioned they felt they hit a plateau and needed to try some individual projects. They expected to create as a group again, it just never happened.
Absolutely awesome! I'm definitely a JESUS FREAK! I hope you are too! Praise God for peculiarity!! My BEST FRIEND was BORN IN A MANGER! THANK YOU JESUS!
They rocked that stage and walked of like yea. They changed christian music and would be great to see them reunite. I remember watching this on tv as a kid with my family.
I saw DCT in 1991 when they were the opening act on Michael W. Smith's "Go West Young Man" tour. I eventually got to see them as headliners on both their "Welcome to the Freak Show" and "Supernatural Experience" tours.
I call the 1980's and 1990's the Golden Years of CCM. To me it just hasn't been as memorable the previous 15 years in contrast to music like this. Not many vocal trios have also doubled as full fledged touring bands.
i was a great fan of dctalk,,i remember they toured with michael w smith...they were great live..playing with michael w smith brought them a differnt audience, people who didn't like rap..
I was young when I first heard this. Was this basically when christian music turned awesome? late 90s early 2000s? DC talk, Audio Adrenaline, jars of clay, jaci velasquez, jennifer knapp, newsboys, OC supertones, pax217, plumb, rebbecca st james, old skillet, seventh day slumber, relient k, sonicflood, stacie orrico (pop), steven curtis chapman, superchick, third day, old switchfoot. How was the 80s? not that popular?
If I'm not mistaken, SCC came around in the late 80's, but Christian music as a whole had really taken a break. I mean, Petra, Stryper and others were awesome (I love telling people that I'm 18 and love the 80's) but, after the age of group and quartet singing, with the Imperials and the Blackwoods and The Cathedrals, and the Bill Gaither Trio and others, Christian music took a break in the 70's/80's with Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, Petra and Stryper, but one guy who's career really jumpstarted during that period was Michael W. Smith. The mid-90's saw the birth of today's CCM. But, as far as the rock goes, Skillet, Switchfoot, Tourniquet, Living Sacrifice, and others. So, yeah, I'd have to agree with you there.
Oh they were. Amy Grant, Rich Mullins, Michael W. Smith, Petra, Stryper, SCC, and on to the early 90's 4Him, Point of Grace. It was just the style that changed in the mid 90's. Even DC Talk started in 1989 with Rap, but then blended it with Rock as the years went on.
@Trygve Nyhaug I would call them Christian alternative at best. Im into very heavy stuff now. Respect for your opinion for sure, but yeah, I can't quite call them "hard rock"

They filled stadiums and arenas around the world. They were indeed pioneers of the genre, becoming the first Christian "Rockstars". Two out of the three have gone on to incredible success. Michael Tate has proven a marvelous fit as the frontman of the Aussie group Newsboys. And Mr Toby McKean, well what can you say about Toby. He has stayed on the forefront of progressive, style and genre blending CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) with CHH (Christian Hip Hop and rap), reggae, even country interests to consistently produce fresh, honest music that has proven incredibly commercially successful while still staying true to the Gospel message. Kevin Max on the other hand, despite having an incredible, unique voice has never acheived the levels of success his former bandmates have in the post DC era. I recently found an interview he did while DC was at their peak. He stated that he didn't want his music to be placed in a 'box' labeled "Just Christian", he wished to appeal to a larger audience. How did that work out for Mr Max? Well when is the last time you even heard his name? Probably when TobyMac threw him (and millions of DC talk fans ) a bone and made the song "Love Feels Like" on his awesomeAsUsual new album "This is Not a Test". The rest of the year Kevin tours the medium to largish church circuit and hasn't been heard on Christian radio since DC days. Interestingly, Stacie Orrico, a young rising star in the early 00's mentioned that same 'box' that Kevin alluded to. Her skyrocketing career sputtered and died as fast as it came. The message here? Turn from the true message of Jesus Christ and salvation, and He will turn from you.

I used to jam out to this back in the day. This, along with Carman, Petra, and all that kind of stuff. Most of it is pretty gay now, but this still jams! I can still appreciate good music when I hear it, even if I don't necessarily hold the same beliefs I did when I was a kid and early teenager. Won't get into what caused the change, but I have my reasons. Regardless, I can appreciate talent when I hear it, and this song is making me nostalgia all over myself right now!
This album was a revelation for me, in more ways than one. It was like my manifesto. I hadn't heard most of these songs though for 15 years because someone broke into my car and stole all my tapes! (Hope they gave it a good listen.) i have ironically, gone in search of this BECAUSE of constantly hearing "contemporary" Christian music whenever I go to the local Salvation Army store. Listening to that over the PA for three hours while going through the racks makes me want to stick a knife in my ears. It's all the SAME SONG!
I watched these guys come together, when we were all in college together. I went and listened to them play "Heavenbound" in college all of those years ago. I still remember Kevin asking my friend Lisa out on a date. A lifetime ago. What a mark they made on Christian music. They were far from perfect, but they ministered to so many along the way. I am glad that I knew them way back when. And that they chose to pursue their dreams.
Im not christian anymore but still come back to this album every few years as its actually a great album, sadly unlike most the of tripe the christian music industry pumps out
Benjamin What happened? How could you be “not Christian” anymore? Once you ask Jesus for forgiveness of sin, the Holy Spirit comes to live in your heart and soul. You can deny the faith but God is there. Unless you never accepted Him to begin with?
This was a game-changer - much in the way Nevermind changed the Rock landscape. Stuff got real. The closet head-banger brethren finally had a voice. I saw them on this tour and Supernatural. It had a rough aspect to it largely due to Kevin Max. I believe he served as a pin to pop the inevitable self-righteousness balloon that comes from Christian music. That being said, I love the solo work of Toby and Michael.
