Love the channel. This is proof if you use the wrong parts, you’ll have a mower that won’t function the way it’s supposed to. Great job bringing this one back from the dead, it looks like a nice solid mower. I once picked one up for $20, guy said he did absolutely everything to it, and I was wasting my time and money on it. Brought it home, everything looked great. Carb was clean, nothing made sense oil was still great, air filter was brand new. Silly me forgot to check the gas, so I take the cap off, annnnnd there is no gas in it. Put some good fresh gas in it, ran like a champ. He didn’t put any gas in it! Good times, LOL!!!
Got a 6.75 Craftsman self propelled with a bag last Friday. Looks new but made 3.11.2006. Broken brake cable, no air filter and leaking carb. $37.20, new carb, cable, filter, and oil change. Runs like a champ. Even drive wheels are good. Guy also threw in a homelite straight shaft trimmer missing fuel lines. The stuff people throw away!
jim s I get stuff like that all the time also. It has become a thing that people just push it out by the road if it doesnt work and go buy new. Newer is NOT BETTER now days. I am sure you know that. That is a very clean mower too. I got one a year ago that sat next door to my moms for two years. It had only been used 1 season, then sat there, protected by the weather except the brake cable froze up in the pulled position,so the guy thought the engine froze up. He pushed it out by the road and my mom grabbed it for me. I replaced that frozen cable, cleaned the carb and It started on the first pull. It ran like new. I made $80 on it so not bad!
Hi Bruce. Question on the bowl nut. I have seen you clean them in videos to ensure the holes are not obstructed. The holes on opposite sides on the bottom when clear, you can see right through them. My question is for the hole on the top of the nut. For mine I am not able to see down into the hole very far and I'm not able to clear it with a wire. I cannot tell if the hole goes straight down to meet the other two or if it takes another path. Can you please share what you know regarding the top hole on the bowl nut, and how to ensure it is not obstructed. Thanks.
So a lawn mower with a miss is just the spark plug? I have two Tecumseh craftsman lawn mowers with misses a lot bigger than yours. Is changing the spark plug all I have to do?
Hello Bruce .. I have ordered a new carb, using the mfg. numbers on my 20 year old 6.5 Craftsman Briggs that I wrote you about at the start of this summer. You recommended cleaning the carb, as the mower wouldn't start after replacing the fuel line. I have cleaned and replaced every part on the old carb and have good fuel flow and regapped the coil for good spark. Still no go. Hears the dumb question .. the new carb is an auto choke and I need to ask, will it work on my primer style setup ?
OK Lets go to the video below at the 9:35 point. Don't go the the video we are on right now. Click on the blue link and go to 9:35 and look. There is a carb there and the 3 holes you see there are for the pulse of air from the primer button. You need those. You should have them on the carb you took off.. I talk to a lot of people, if I told you this already sorry. Did you clean the small holes in the brass bolt the holds the aluminium---- bowl on VERY important ruclips.net/video/mMEyMpQhMWE/видео.html
Hey Bruce, you mentioned that with the new plug it seem like it is running better. Did the new plug fix the small miss or have you moved on to rebuilding the carburetor?
Hi Bruce How are Kohler Engines in general are they Reliable Dependable & Durable? I wanted to try one but it was Easier to find a Briggs & Stratton Engine. I got a Push Mower that runs great from a Garage Sale It has the 120000 Quantum Engine which I understand is an L-Head Side Valve Engine & my particular Mower is an MTD Yard Machines from 2005 or 2006 thought they weren't producing anymore Side Valve Engines.
A briggs will be great. Just take a close look as to where the cables connect from the mower you are using it on. Shaft length for the blade can be different too.
Great video. I just had water in my gas and oil from rinsing the mower with the hose. It would only run about 15 seconds and stall. I think the caps were not tight and water got in there. I drained both, cleaned off the plug and its running great! How do you recommend cleaning the bottom? I usually flip it on its side, then hose it, or scrape it with a putty knife. Is there a better way.
best way is to flip the mower with the spark plug sitting in the air. With some model decks you can loosen the handles bars and it will prop its self upright where the handle bars fold. Make sure always if you flip it on its side that the air filter is sitting up right. You dont want your breather to be clogged with oil and fuel
I tip them to the exhaust side and either scrape them out or sometimes use a pressure washer. Make sure the engine turns easily first before pulling the rope. (oil in the chamber)
Luke Grekat I got poison ivy a few years back scraping a mower deck. I only use a pressure washer any more. The water dampens the grass. It also saves my grass mold allergys issue.
Hey Bruce, I trashed picked a murray mower the other day. It has the new generation 500 e B&S 140cc engine. Had not worked on one of these as yet. Sure we are going to see many more in time. I have a question concerning this engine...does it have a compression relief system on it. When trying to start it, wants to stop and almost pull the handle out of my hand. I thought at first it was out of time..checked and it is right on. Did a compression test and it is high...about 130 lbs per sq inch...high for a 6 year old mower..valve lash is very close to 004 so the valves are doing what they should. If it does have a decompression system...that may be the issue..if not...what say you sir?\
I did remove the flywheel, the key was intact and looked fine. The engine pulls thru fine with the plug out..so that is why I thought it may be the decompression item on the engine.
Being that it is a simple Murray push mower...may not be worth doing much to it..as you always say on your channel, lots of parts if not fixable..smiles
Right. . You sound like you are doing the right stuff. The lash could be a bit higher which may pickup the spring on the decompression spring. This is the cam sprocket video i did. ruclips.net/video/pL-ZVURFc5o/видео.html
Great video sir.I found a like NEW TORO Recycler W/Kohler 6.75 hp. that had bad gas an was kicked to the curb. Cleaned the cab, flushed the tank an ........... first - pull start .
Hey Bruce got a question for ya. I recently got a cheap lawnmower with a briggs 3.5 engine in it. Engine runs fine and I repainted the deck, so it looks good, runs good, and is ready to sell. But I have one concern about it. The crankshaft has some play in it, it can move up and down. It has about a centimetre of play. The blade is still on very tight and it seems ok, but I'm a bit worried. Could this be dangerous?
Well this chart is a great help you will see that crankshaft end play (right side of chart)is a lot smaller that that. Now is this a selfpropell motor or anything else that may make the blade move up and down? Save this link some how. www4.briggsandstratton.com/miscpdfs/RNT/Engine%20Specifications%20Chart_ms3992.pdf
No its just a regular push mower with a 3.5 Briggs. Im concerned because the engine is older and a bit worn out. If you lift up the mower while its running, it makes a bit of a rough sound. Thanks for the chart Bruce.
Jacob Burrows Thanks for the link to the spec chart. Talk about an all in one useful tool! Was able to save it to iBooks for future reference. Love your videos.
Bruce, I have a old String brush cutter with a B&S 6hp (122K02-007-E1) that is acting like it is Hydro-Locked, but when I pull the plug and pull it through, no oil comes out. No oil comes out of the muffler either. It is very hard to pull through with the plug in, but easy with the plug out. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Bruce, I just got the fly wheel off and the shear key looks fine. Not broken or bent. Oil is where it should be on the dip stick. I am going to pull the muffler to see if anything is blocking the exhaust. That is the only thing I can think of. Any other Suggestions? Thanks.
The new plug helped a lot. and the miss goes away when it gets hot. So I let it go. (maybe a different bowl nut would do it but it does run great. cut the lawn twice with it now)
Hey bruce i got some old briggs and stratton and all my springs are gone because they broke and what im talking about i the gov spring and such do i buy gov spring to make it idle normal?? it is really loud like its going to blow up so im going clean it and fix but i want to know first? and i love briggs and stratton engines becaue they last long and mostly crank when ever no matter what temp it is
Yes governor springs are the key to success. Most B&S mower springs are similar but they do vary in length. If you can get to an old dump or put an add on one of the free sites to look for more mowers. The springs i have have come from mowers that quit running for good. Good luck Bruce ,-----------Bruce
Boy, someone went through a lot of effort to bugger up that carb good. You are lucky the Tecumseh bowl nut didn't ruin the Briggs carb body. I am wondering about your used Briggs bowl nut though, how do you know if has the right size main jet orifice size? Don't those bowl nuts come in many different "jet" sizes?
You should invest in a 1/4" drive cordless impact gun. It will cut your time in half, if not more. I use mine constantly. I can pull a carb off in less than a minute.
I have a question I have a Suzuki 2 stroke engine with a blade brake clutch when I engage the blade the rpm start to jump around and doesn't run smoothly any ideas?
Isn't it amazing what people will try to fix something and be totally off the mark and make things worse? I've experienced more operator errors than any single true failure in my years with small engines. I did the math...lol..showing my age, but I've been on the small engine band wagon for 27 years lol. Great video as always my good Northern Friend! Howdy to Zed....Cheers!! Zip~
These are the types of fixes where the person was too cheap to pay a shop to fix the problem because they know everything...I bet they got frustrated when it kept leaking fuel and not starting, threw it away and spend another few hundred bucks on a new lawnmower, when it may have cost them less than $100 to get that one fixed to begin with. This is one of those cases you wish you could charge the cheap ass more for making a simple problem worse by messing with it themselves. Glad you got that mower for free, that'll help a lot by not having to really put much money into it yourself to resell it. BTW, Tecumseh and Briggs parts don't really interchange LOL.
love your videos, im a new subscriber. i do the same thing where i am from, been doing it for about 5 years maybe. your videos are very well done and i enjoy learning from them for sure.

The better ones make it on to the wall but there are many that have not and are still a story to every animal i have harvested. I have taken many mule deer as well but the thrill is just not there compared to a foxy old whitetail. My opinion of course. Just like the chevy dodge ford guys everybody is right. Thanks for the comment and I will be looking for your input in the future. Bruce
thank you bruce, i myself have never got to hunt white tail yet. i am typically elk and mule deer and mountain lion but i do hear good things. i look forward to more videos, mike
Sadly the cost to get a lawnmower fixed at your local small engine shop costs more than the machine is worth most times. Lawn mowers are like toasters now. LOL
Your small engine shop is a rip off then. Mine charges $60 minimum for shop work, but they will actually work around that if the repair is extremely simple. They charge $15 for a diagnostic fee, very reasonable, and they'll tell you at that point if its worth repairing or not.
William Todd I don't own a small engine shop and don't rip people off, I do work on small engines and most of the time its for charity. My point was if you have a older mower like Bruce was working on the value of the mower is most likely not worth the repair at times depending on the problem. And my analogy to a toaster is correct with entry level mowers. In my experience most mowers need little to fix and see the owners put them out to the curb for not starting and go buy another after 10 years of use. Cheers William
Instead of using wire to keep the emergency cutoff from shutting down the engine, I use a small clamp. Easy on, easy off. Nice series of videos though.
I use a zip-tie slightly larger than the handle/emergency bar together...I can slide it in place as I'm mowing and slide it down to shut it off....easy peazy. I also put black foam pipe insulation over my handle to cut down on vibration. Just my $.02
Never ceases to amaze me the way a person can buy a 300 dollar mower, then not do anything, invest anything, and go buy another 500 dollar lawnmower. The good thing though is that its trash treasure for the thrifty people :)
Well for me it takes 3 hours to edit and upload a 15 minute video. Also filming them makes the actual job twice as long or longer. I also like gardening and many other things. I have tried 2 a week but it is tough. Sorry about this but maybe a short one for tips or something. Would tips from Bruce sound OK?
I found a leaf blower on the curb. Busted pull cord. It's located internally. Easy enough. I suspect however that the guy who ruined it broke the cord because he didn't use oil mix in the fuel...lord have mercy...it just binds up.
I've gotten 4 good free mowers already this year but nobody is better at getting free mowers than George, "The Shade Tree Fixit Man" He gets pickup loads of free mowers. Anyway, I really need the bag off of that Craftsman mower you have there, if you could send it to me......Thanks:)
Well I can call them a couple of things. I watch the video and I think I called it a bowl nut. It may be a dialect issue. I think you are from below the equator as you said carby not carb. We don't say that up here. Fun stuff eh!!!! Thanks for commenting.
Love the channel.

I have seen that too.
I agree on those spark plugs. Bad issues with them. Nice mower. Always nice to find an easy fix mower once in a while. Free is always the best price
My 02 Ford Pickup is 19 years now, but I only drive it 3,000 miles a year. You have a nice Truck Mr. Pender. Good job on the mower.

Can you please share what you know regarding the top hole on the bowl nut, and how to ensure it is not obstructed. Thanks.
If it is a briggs you should be able to stick a skinny wire into the top and it will appear visible through the horizontal hole. good luck

No sir. In my experience the spark plug is not an issue. The most usual thing on a Tecumseh is the idles cct in the carb.
Just stumbled across your channel and I really like it. Great channel. I subscribed.
Welcome aboard.

Bruce, do you recommend the highest grade of gas for lawn mowers, snowblowers, generators, etc?
A premium gas without ethanol. It is getting harder to find. So if you have to use gas with ethanol treat it with a treatment that you like.
tips would be great. I am learning a lot from your videos. Thanks, William
OK I will
Always amazes me the stuff people do to there mowers. Another one saved Great job bruce
You should have seen it before I washed it at the car wash. I looked very sad. I love the red ones.
Hi bruce, good video.:) did you end up keeping the lawn mower? it looks like it's brand new. or did you sell it?
I did sell it to a young family with a 6 month old baby for VERY low price.
I think it sounds really good with a new plug ..Nice mower for a free one !!!
Yes it is
Great video bruce . Thanks for sharing #smallenginenation #keepwrenchin
thanks Dr.

That truck looks brand new.
It is 20.
I'm glad you make these videos, you've taught me a lot!!!
Good for you Lawson.
My wife just said, whoops Bob is watching Bruce, don't bug em.... LMAO
That is so nice. You are going back in time watching on some of these. BTW My Dad's name is Bob.
Do you have an assortment of new spare parts or do you go to the store as needed for each job ?
Most of the time I can find what i need around here. On the Japan stuff I order more on line. EBay.ca (Canadian) is my go to.
I must say that Silverado looks very clean no rust nothing 👍
Thanks Winston

No its just a regular push mower with a 3.5 Briggs. Im concerned because the engine is older and a bit worn out. If you lift up the mower while its running, it makes a bit of a rough sound. Thanks for the chart Bruce.
Jacob Burrows Thanks for the link to the spec chart. Talk about an all in one useful tool! Was able to save it to iBooks for future reference. Love your videos.
Thanks so much
Bruce, I have a old String brush cutter with a B&S 6hp (122K02-007-E1) that is acting like it is Hydro-Locked, but when I pull the plug and pull it through, no oil comes out. No oil comes out of the muffler either. It is very hard to pull through with the plug in, but easy with the plug out. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Check the shear key. It may be broken. Also make sure there is only 1/2 liter (1/2 quart) in the motor. More oil is bad
Bruce, I just got the fly wheel off and the shear key looks fine. Not broken or bent. Oil is where it should be on the dip stick. I am going to pull the muffler to see if anything is blocking the exhaust. That is the only thing I can think of.
Any other Suggestions? Thanks.
George Goff you might have good compression
I might have missed it but did a new spark plug get rid of the small miss?
The new plug helped a lot. and the miss goes away when it gets hot. So I let it go. (maybe a different bowl nut would do it but it does run great. cut the lawn twice with it now)
Bruce more time well spent for both of us.
Thanks 59
Hey bruce i got some old briggs and stratton and all my springs are gone because they broke and what im talking about i the gov spring and such do i buy gov spring to make it idle normal?? it is really loud like its going to blow up so im going clean it and fix but i want to know first? and i love briggs and stratton engines becaue they last long and mostly crank when ever no matter what temp it is

I can tell you was really excited 😂😂😂
Yes I do that.
Sweet a free mower that runs now !
Yes the F word FREE
Enjoy your videos.
Thanks.
Thanks for another great video Bruce: you da man !!!
Thanks
Boy, someone went through a lot of effort to bugger up that carb good. You are lucky the Tecumseh bowl nut didn't ruin the Briggs carb body. I am wondering about your used Briggs bowl nut though, how do you know if has the right size main jet orifice size? Don't those bowl nuts come in many different "jet" sizes?
Yes they do and I guessed. I runs fine and cut my lawn with it twice now. Lucky for me.
cool!
Nice find i have paid $20.00 for mowers in worse shape. Good catch on that bowl nut.
Thanks
“My old old sears ratchet”.... throws on ground 😂
too funny
You should invest in a 1/4" drive cordless impact gun. It will cut your time in half, if not more. I use mine constantly. I can pull a carb off in less than a minute.
Thanks. I have one now. This video is a bit older. Thanks
I have a question I have a Suzuki 2 stroke engine with a blade brake clutch when I engage the blade the rpm start to jump around and doesn't run smoothly any ideas?
I would start with a carb clean. the mesh inside the carb behind the diaphragm may be dirty
+Bruce Pender thanks you gonna do it this weekend
thanks Bruce ...
Isn't it amazing what people will try to fix something and be totally off the mark and make things worse? I've experienced more operator errors than any single true failure in my years with small engines. I did the math...lol..showing my age, but I've been on the small engine band wagon for 27 years lol. If we were to go to Canada would it be possible to stop by your garage to see you
Just email me. I am in western Canada. (9 hours drive north of Helena Montana)
You need a spring hand clamp for your handle :)
Love your videos!
Thank you
its one of those new spillproof gas cans. (removes top because it dont work worth a crap)
Well I don't use one of those but I still spill a lot of gas. LOL.
ITS ALIVE ;-) I Thought it might have had chrome wheels when I saw the title ;-)
Maybe I'll paint them silver.
lol ;-)
love your videos, im a new subscriber. i do the same thing where i am from, been doing it for about 5 years maybe. your videos are very well done and i enjoy learning from them for sure.

thank you bruce, i myself have never got to hunt white tail yet. i am typically elk and mule deer and mountain lion but i do hear good things. i look forward to more videos,

Hi Bruce,
Keep the videos coming.
How about something on a leaf blower recoil.
OK they are all a bit different. What make?
a small bungie cord is much easier than tying a string to keep the throttle on
I use a clamp now
i love your videos do you know anything about E3 spark plugs
Really I don't think they make that much difference on something like a lawn mower. Especially the older ones.
nice job!
Thanks Leo
Good catch on those wrong parts...
Thanks Tufdog.
A great invention is the FUNNEL.
Yes for beer oops
hrx harmony tda stuck in drive clutch for drive disengaged any help appreced
Sorry I am not there.
What part of Canada do u live??
The Province of Alberta.
The WOW in the title says it all. People do crazy things. They should stick to duct tape and bailing wire.
I agree. They almost ruined a great mower eh!!!!
Sadly the cost to get a lawnmower fixed at your local small engine shop costs more than the machine is worth most times. Lawn mowers are like toasters now. LOL
Good thing i do this for fun and frustration. not money
+Bruce Pender me too! if I was a millionaire, I'd still pull over if I saw a free mower.
funny!!!

NICE TO SEE YOU MAKE MISTAKES LIKE US LOT LOL
Oh don'y worry I make a lot of mistakes. That's here you learn
Instead of using wire to keep the emergency cutoff from shutting down the engine, I use a small clamp. Easy on, easy off. Nice series of videos though.
Thanks
I use a zip-tie slightly larger than the handle/emergency bar together...I can slide it in place as I'm mowing and slide it down to shut it off....easy peazy. I also put black foam pipe insulation over my handle to cut down on vibration. Just my $.02
This mower looks very new?
That is why i like red.
yeah, it sounds like it's only hitting on one cylinder.
Good one sir. LOL
Never ceases to amaze me the way a person can buy a 300 dollar mower, then not do anything, invest anything, and go buy another 500 dollar lawnmower. The good thing though is that its trash treasure for the thrifty people :)
You got it!!!!!
Top shelf !!
Thanks for sharing.
I'll have to check out that spark plug video test with multi meter.
Cheers
Thanks for watching Eddie
Hi youtube star B P .thankyou
You are welcome.

You should get you a piece of Velcro strap to tie the brake handle with.
There are cable clips mad on the US mowers I will get some of those.
sorry what I was referring to is when you need to hold the handle instead of tying a piece of rope. Easy on and off.
Thanks
You know..., reading plugs is a real art, can you make a video about it?
I did do this one a few years back. mostly ohm meter stuff

Hey Bruce you should upload more than once a week.
That would be awesome
+Bruce Pender yeah that would be great. Great vids
Free mower..what part of the country..i can't even buy junk rusty none running mowers for less than 50 in Houston.
If you can see the date this was filmed in the year 2016
Some people should never be allowed to own tools...they create a worse mess than the original problem.
Well they try I guess.
Interesting
Thanks
i subscribed
Thanks so much Landon
At least this time it was not Silicon!
Yes I had a tough run with that.
i find craftsman makes everything hard to work on
Well Craftsman orders different engines for their mowers. This one is a Briggs and Straton. Years ago they used Tecumseh. Thanks for commenting.
I found a leaf blower on the curb. Busted pull cord. It's located internally. Easy enough. I suspect however that the guy who ruined it broke the cord because he didn't use oil mix in the fuel...lord have mercy...it just binds up.
Good thing you don't smoke while working on that mower, or you would ignited your shop 3 times with all that spilled gas! Take care!
my bad you are right
where is free mowers in your area posted
Drive around and find them. People put them out for the trash all the time.
Just what dmc says....i see in the trash every saturday....also look on craigslist....$10-30.00
in America most of mowers are free or very cheap
Well id they aren't running they are cheap. Running they go from $80 and up here in Canada
👍
I've gotten 4 good free mowers already this year but nobody is better at getting free mowers than George, "The Shade Tree Fixit Man" He gets pickup loads of free mowers.
Anyway, I really need the bag off of that Craftsman mower you have there, if you could send it to me......Thanks:)
Good one!!!!
Bruce Pender
Are you sub'd to George's channel? It's worth a look.
I am now :-)
your student.Bruce.
Its funny that you are good with your hands and seem to be mechanically logical, but you call the main jet a "carby nut"!
Well I can call them a couple of things. I watch the video and I think I called it a bowl nut. It may be a dialect issue. I think you are from below the equator as you said carby not carb. We don't say that up here. Fun stuff eh!!!! Thanks for commenting.
I have problems with those spark plugs all the time let me tell you, I've never had one work right after a few months of use. It's really a shame
Yes they don't seem to last.
