Thanks! I'm as knowledgeable about the internal parts of a computer as I am about quantum physics, but I needed to remove my hard drive from a laptop with a bad motherboard. I was intimidated at first, but you made this look super easy. Just successfully removed my first HD. Yay! Thanks so much for the tutorial!
This is great!!! I just found my DV7 and instead of buying a new laptop I’ll just replace the hard drive which is bad anyway. The diagnostics tell me as much.
ITC Austin hello i have two questions. first in the papers for the laptop (i have the 1025) says up to 1tb with two 500gb. some body have any luck installing 1tb disk or several disk maybe a 500gb and one 1tb or 2 disk of 1tb each ?
Zachary, your DV7 may be a late model. If yours hasn't any screws, you need to slide the battery removal slider in the OPPOSITE direction to how you used it to remove the battery and this will lift up the top edge of the back cover. Slide your finger underneath and it should come right off. This is how it works with my DV7 which is 18 months old.
hi, great tutorial, simple and precise. I have a DV7 but it has 2 HD. The hard disk 1 has failed based on the bios set up test. How can I tell which one is the disk 1 from disk 2? please advice. much obliged
Wow!!! This is amazing!!! Thank you for time and patience,... Thanks to you,.. And your clear voice, I could understand perfectly each step,... Thank You again.
Nicely done! Time for an SSD. Are there physical size differences that we need to care about? 1.8", 2.5", other? I'm guessing it's a std 2.5" drive? Thx.
Great video! Easy to follow. It was very helpful. I seem to be running out of space and would like to add a second HD. I'd there anything special, I need to do, and extra parts I would require? Thank you.
Thanks! You would need a hard drive caddy and cable connector. Check to make sure what you get is compatible with your laptop series and doesn't exceed the max capabilities. Don't forget to subscribe!
Hello there! I have a Pavilion DV7 4273us and need to know if i follow the same steps? Also i need to know if i should add a bigger hard drive or add an sdd if compatible??? My comp runs so slow at times and i dont have the money to go buy a new one right now. Please give me guidance in the right direction for a faster more functional windows seven running dv7 4273us!!
Another related video that It might be useful for you to produce is data recover. I mean if you are replacing a hdd it is likely due to a failure or malfunction. Since some of us do not back up our computers every day the inevitably there may be file that are lost. Could yiou cover the recovery process if any.
the notch you have to pull back to release the battery - simply pull it the other way and you will see the back cover slightly raising then simpli pull it out :)
My problem is that my HDD is connected to the motherboard via a cable that seems to be attached to the hard drive, and I don't know where I can get an SSD that comes with that cable.
Dear Austin ... I have DV7 and wish to replace with larger drive but not sure what PHYSICAL SIZE to order. My plan is to put new 2gb drive in external case and use True Image 2014 to create an image from existing 750gb drive over USB. Then, swap the drives. But first I need to know what specs to look for when ordering. Is this a 2.5-inch drive? If so, Seagate has a 2gb drive at a good price but is 5400 rpm. Please recommend fast drive with large gb front end or hybrid. Great video. Waiting for your response before I order the new drive. Thank you. ... Dr. Graves, Jurisdictionary.
Hi ITC Austin. Two quick questions. What is the single maximum capacity hard drive i can install into one of these laptops ?. What type of hard drive do i search for online when buying laptop hard drives ? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you ukadmin.
Hey, I was wondering if this video is for a HP Pavilion dv7 3085dvx? Sorry, don't know about computers and trying to figure out if I can change my hard drive to a SSd one in mine.
no gaming is mostly dependent on your video processing speed. hard drive speed will only help with the initial load of the game you won't notice a difference during play.
Hi! Thanks for the video! I'm am officially retiring this computer this week and giving it to my mother to run down to the ground. I have two 500GB hard drives of which I would like to remove the slave drive (D: Drive) and reuse it as an external soon. WD makes decent quality drives.... I'm just worried of any potential issues of windows on boot. Can you PM me with any solutions? Thanks!
Sure why not? They're both going to be SATA drives so you should have no problem. Best of luck! I appreciate your support. Thanks for watching and please subscribe!!
Hi, some computers do come with two hard drive (hard drive A and hard drive B). 1 will hold your OS and the other will be extra storage. Sometimes, they'll even configure mirroring but this isn't so common anymore. Sorry I couldn't be of anymore help. I appreciate your support and please remember to subscribe!!!
I added a 2nd hard drive to my DV7 3065DX, 1 TB and its all installed with the newmodeus caddy but when i turn the computer on it doesn't recognize the 2nd drive. Is there something I need to do to initialize it?
First, I cant replace a 20GB laptop hdd from a older laptop into it. The older drive has too many pins. Why is that? Second, is it possible to put a dv8240us hdd into a dv7-1260us laptop? I know that many laptop manufacturers have special hard drive connectors for their laptops for different models.
hi. i have dv7-3065dx . and a dv7-1240us 1.- how to know if my laptop can supports 2 HDD.... 2.-what is the max ram memory that I can add to it??? thanks
I bought a Seagate - 2TB Internal SATA Hard Drive I have a DV7-1020 US with a 320 hard drive running vista I am wondering if the 2TB will work with my laptop/ Minimum System RequirementsPC: Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8; Mac: MacBook®, MacBook® Pro or Mac Mini computer with Intel® processor running Mac OS X operating system; Linux; laptop with internal SATA support, SATA 6 Gbps (backwards compatible with SATA 3 Gbps)
Sure you can definitely try to. There are hard drive caddys they sell that make this possible. Try googling for a hard drive caddy for your specific computer. If they make it, you'll have no problem upgrading to an SSD. Best of luck! I appreciate your support. Thanks for watching and please subscribe!!
besides performing a primary hard disk self test (which i did and mine got stuck at 44%) is there any other way to verify my hard drive bit the dust (for free)
So I understand correctly, the 6 screws that remove the bottom plate are not there and are in fact missing? Have you tried to gently pop/slide off the plate? Please let me know if I can help. Best of luck. Thanks for watching! Show your support and please subscribe!
The screw driver set I am using is by boxer. Pretty neat set and have a magnetic head. Best of luck. Thanks for watching! Show your support and please subscribe!
Absolutely! You may need to use an ssd hard drive caddy but those are fairly easy to find. Give it a shot and let me know if you have any further questions. Best of luck! I appreciate your support. Thanks for watching and please subscribe!!

Did you go into computer management and partition the new drive?
Drives will not show up anywhere else until you have partitions and formatted them.
