I don't agree with Cornette about everything. But I def agree that Cornette is not a homophobe in the slightest. That said, if Sonny Kiss does not like to have his sexuality commented on, he shouldn't be salaciously ramming Tommy Dreamer's face into his butt. Doing something to get a reaction & then being all pissy when you GET a reaction is the surest sign of a
useless whiny hypocrite.
Know I’m a year late but I agree. Sonny needs to stop his gimmick. I’m not asking him to stop being gay and I’m not against them in the slightest but he needs to stop equipping it in his character so much to the point where his whole character to the point where all it becomes is “look at how gay I am!” Nothing against him personally but he needs to stop ramming peoples faces into his ass. I feel it’s part of the reason why so many people now a days call wrestling gay and stupid.

Jim, as a gay man I've always been thankful for how great you've been in respect to our community in the past. I didn't find what you said offensive. Thank you for always putting over gay marriage at a time when next to no one in pro-wrestling was being a vocal ally, plus you're always courteous to gay people. Big respect. Keep up the good work.

Agreed. As a dude from the younger generation, I'm bisexual and I'm thankful for how Jim has been in support of our community being able to live our lives free of oppression.
As someone who's bisexual and wants to one day train to become a professional wrestler, I'm thankful for Jim's contributions to the biz and how he's not bigoted or hateful.
I'd didn't find what he said horrendous or offensive. Especially compared to what people like Ultimate Warrior or Val Venis have said about gay or transgender folk and It's very big of him to even apologize if he offended Sonnt or anyone else. Not many people would give it the time of day, but it was so big of Jim to actually say what he said when most people wouldn't even bother. Jim is a real one and I'll always be thankful for the guy.

@@SpiralPoliFemboy totally. Theres plenty of his podcasts that support us, whether about same-sex marriage or the advantage to the business of having gay wrestlers and he's spoken about just how many important men in the business have been gay, amongst other things.
... and Jim is man enough to apologise when he thinks he's may be had something misconstrued. Frankly I think his comments only got traction because their are a lot of the former - and at that time current/currently - independent wrestlers who he'd slammed or slammed their style of wrestling who wanted to throw some sh*t at him.
And if there were any actually gay guys who were offended I'd tell them to lighten up and pick their battles more carefully ('cause they are enough real ones we face). Gays used to have a reputation for having the best sense of wit and humour, never being afraid to take the p*ss out of themselves, but some (not a majority) younger ones - who didn't have to fight for their rights 'cause they came along after the major struggles - are letting the side down by being killjoys (for Christ sake gay means happy - f*cking act it 14yo whiny Brandon on your goddamn keyboard).

Joey Ryans comments were dumber than his "wrestling", and i use that term loosely. There was nothing homophobic about Jims analysis, and its sad that so many people hopped on the bandwagon before even listenting to Jim.
Thankfully the majority of people with common sense are with Jim, and only a few dozen, if that, are siding with Joey Ryan.

As an openly gay wrestling fan, I grew up watching gimmicks like Rico and wishing for some kind of gay character that wasn’t stereotypical and kicked ass and wasn’t some kind of flamboyant caricature groping their opponents in the ring. So while watching Double or Nothing, the harsh reality of Sonny Kiss hit me right between the eyes, and I had a reaction of “what the fuck is this shit?”
So unfortunately, this Sonny Kiss schtick is what will pass as a “gay wrestler” in the mainstream because white knights can pat themselves on the back for being inclusive for supporting them because anything more subtle or unexpected wouldn’t give them the same social justice points as cheering a male Naomi. Imagine in the 80s, a bunch of wrestlers calling out social media users for calling Earthquake fat? Why should Earthquake be bothered since he could come to their door and kick their ass? And that’s why everybody comes to the poor little gay wrestler’s defense - because he’s just a harmless gay wrestler with a face full of makeup who can’t do anything to anybody. Nothing sells wrestling tickets like a “harmless wrestler” living his best true life.
Wrestling fans critique gimmicks all the time, but this guy is untouchable because....the gimmick may be a shoot? Or because he may be an “inspiration” to people like me? But his sexuality in real life has nothing to do with his wrestling character - even if both are gay. Jeez, I guess Lacey Evans shouldn’t be criticized at all because she was a fucking Marine - even though the Sassy Southern Belle gimmick doesn’t reference that. Or I guess Chris Kanyon should have been a career babyface back in the day. Hey, the fans were amazing toward Darren Young during his time with WWE. The homophobia here is coming from these social justice fucks that are protecting this Kiss dude from criticism because they assume he can’t handle it the way other wrestlers can. And if you’re that soft, you shouldn’t be a public figure in a world of simulated violence. Why do we exist in a time where the wrestling FANS try maintaining kayfabe more than the fucking wrestlers on the show? There is too much interaction between fans and the real people behind the gimmicks, and not enough interaction between the fans and the fictional personas. And that is almost exclusively the talent’s fault, and it creates situations like this.
Cornette is less of a homophobe than I am.

AmericanNohbuddy ™ that’s true, but she’s another one who doesn’t really have her sexuality referenced along with her character (Finn wears the rainbow shirts, not her, even though she probably should), but I think gay males in wrestling would be given the harder time shaking the stereotype. For all intents and purposes, a lesbian can kick another girl’s ass, a gay guy...not so much. At least that’s the perception.

I was actually entertained by him over in Lucha Underground, which actually showcased more of his in-ring ability. He's actually a pretty good high flyer.
@@SoelGriffin We really won't know until they give him time to flesh out his character. If Sonny uses his gimmick to tell a story (like Velveteen) then he has potential, but relying on being "the gay wrestler" is only going to put him in a box of mediocrity.

Jim Cornette is old school. He don't care what your gimmick or persona is as long as it is entertaining and explained in detail to build the character up. They (AEW) put people out there and the announcers didn't build up a story to make people engaged.
It's hard to build up stories when it's your first time on TV. You need time to build characters up. When they get weekly TV they can fix this. Whether they will is another story.
Most AEW fans watched Being The Elite and Road to Double or Nothing beforehand. So, the talent was introduced along with some of the stories. I'm old school too, but I also did some homework as AEW announced new talent that I wasn't familiar with. Him being the road warrior that he is may not have had the time, and that's understandable.
@@scorpioskyswelltrimmedbeard some people did do that but most casual fans just tuned in without watching that hence the confusion about the people wrestling and the storylines they had. I don't think they will have this issue by the time they debut on TV. If anything double or nothing and the upcoming pay per view they have is a way for them to see what works and what doesn't and make adjustments before making it to TV.
Whats funny is people demanding storylines for a gimic battle royal in the first match on a pre show ppv....

The battle royale was a chance for some of these people to get airtime that some will never get again. Was it all good? Nope. But it wasn't the complete shit show that Corny described it to be in my opinion.

I feel the same way. I don't agree with what he thinks about certain wrestlers when it is clear that they have matured for the most part, but I do agree that the things that he revealed about Joey Ryan are disgusting and no one should be entertained by the things he does when it crosses the line into depravity. It wouldn't do us any good to blow up his comment section with bullshit so we can take from what he says what we will but there's no doubt that Jim has a respect for wrestling that others should engender in themselves if they are in the wrestling business or are a fan.

Simon Gotch always was great, but 1000 times more enjoyable to watch in MLW, and outside of WWE. That Gotch Piledriver is brutal.
I have to say that I really, really enjoyed the Vaudevillains. They were coloful, very good in the ring, entertaining, had a meta thing about them. I'm not saying that this was necessarily better than Contra and what else he does now. Just pointing out how great I thought the Vaudevillains were. I wish they could've gone further than they did. But that's WWE for you, I guess.

It depends on who your addressing, if he had said that about Nyla Rose, it would certainly be a slur, I don't see it as a slur towards Sonny Kiss though, who is a gay man dressed in female style wrestling gear. It worth noting that Cornette correctly addressed Nyla Rose during the segment about her match.

While I disagree with Jim's opinion on Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks, I 100% agree with him on Joey Ryan. If I wanted to watch his horrible act, I'd go watch porn. This is professional wrestling. His garbage has no place in any major wrestling company. He is a total disgrace and embarrassment to this profession. Fortunately, neither WWE nor AEW have been stupid enough to sign him and I hope it never happens. Hypothetically, if it did, that company would reach an all-time lowest point in professional wrestling that has ever been seen. Fortunately, it won't happen for very financially logical reasons. Fox Sports Network (where WWE is moving to in the Fall) and TNT (where AEW will start their weekly telecasts in the Fall) would significantly lose viewers, sponsors, and advertising revenue (in WWE's case their stock would fall) because none of them would want to associate with a show that has such a horrible act like Joey Ryan. I think both WWE and AEW are smart enough to know that. So, Joey Ryan will continue to prosper in those horrible Independent Wrestling Mud Bars while we will never have the displeasure of seeing his horrible act on national cable television.Also, Jim said nothing homophobic and the Battle Royal was awful, deserving condemnation.

Jim Cornette just calls a spade a spade. I am gay and the hysteria from some people regarding the Sonny Kiss comments is just so over the top to the point it is embarrassing as fuck. Context is always important and anyone that bothers to listen to more than a few snippets of his podcast would know JC seriously isn't homophobic. People are way too sensitive these days.
Growing up near Louisville, Jim has always been an idol of mine. I do, however disagree with a lot (certainly not all) of his views on modern professional wrestling. With that being said, I absolutely hate Joey Ryan and every single one of his ancestors.

What's the issue with a Luchador having a stylized dinosaur/reptile mask; is that anymore ridiculous or puzzling than the masks of Tiger Mask, Thunder Liger, Psicosis or La Parka? Somehow a dinosaur is too much but a dragon, tiger and alien are neither "ridiculous" or "puzzling"? No explanation needed for Liger. Dinosaur mask, too abstract for the audience.
What explanation do audiences really need for a Luchador/Wrestler's mask?
I do not care to defend Orange Cassidy, staple gun spot or the quality of any wrestling on Double or Nothing. However, it comes off ill for Cornette to frame his critique on the basis audiences require elaborate explanation for rather simple concepts like a dinosaur mask on a wrestler.

I legit didn't think Jim's rant was homphobic at all. I got what he was trying to say. It's just that Cornette has a talent of being... too direct and crass with what he says
We are in the age of sensitive people.
Some people were more upset and angry than the guy that was, allegedly, insulted by Jim. If you've listened to the show you know what was really said and that he only attacked the booking and the logic or better the lack thereof. And the fact that the commentators didn't explain one thing about the wrestlers,the shows and the feuds(Dustin vs Cody is an exception but you get it more from the promo package before the match).
And I liked the show and thought it was the best PPV in a long time but if you look it from a different perspective you will have different opinions.
That's the strategy of "call-out culture": Point out how you are dissatisfied with a person's opinion and let your fanbase run a witch-hunt. They know what they're doing, feign powerlessness so other people can fight your battles.

An intense suspension of disbelief is required. And that is exactly how good all these guys were in the ring with the creative liberties of Pro Wrestling. Here’s what it boils down to: Cornette never made an issue with Sonny Kiss being gay and that’s because HE DIDN’T KNOW HE WAS GAY! His issue was that it wasn’t explained! You can probably assume from how he presents himself as a wrestler, but as we’ve heard from Sonny Kiss himself, there have been flamboyant wrestlers before. There have been wrestlers whose sexuality was veiled presented as homosexual (Rico, Goldust, Kwee Wee). How is ANYONE who’s never heard of this guy know that, in his words, it’s not a gimmick and this is his life. There is nothing wrong with Sonny Kiss living his truth, and everyone should support that. But Cornette isn’t making an anti-gay statement because he’s never seen this guy and only knows what he sees on the television and then never gets any clarity over why. Sure, he doesn’t need clarity. We don’t have to out someone as soon as we see them so that they “make sense.” But then the outrage also doesn’t make sense why we’re trying to figure out who this person is.

Well yeah, Jim might be a self admitted asshole but hes not a bigot. He apologized for saying the terms he used to describe Sonny. He was not aware they were insensitive and manned up to that. What he didn't apologize for was Sonny thinking the announcers didn't need to explain his gimmick. This is the first time a mainstream audience (myself included) have ever seen Sonny wrestle so a little background on him should have been given as Jim said.
