      Yeah, I agree. I remember in one of the first jobs I had, there was a nice Sudanese guy doing the minimum wage job i was doing and he could easily talk to me in English, other guys in Turkish and yet more in Arabic. Those kind of skills are lost as people who are in Britain, and foreign don't have obvious routes to teach these skills.

      No, this fails as a statistical comparison. Immigrants are generally successful young people who have the opportunity to live a another country. Comparing it to every Briton is massively unfair. If they showed British immigrants to other countries the numbers would be very similar.

    Of course the native statistics are going to look bad by comparison. On the one hand, you're taking data from the whole population. On the other, the few who are wealthy or smart enough to immigrate.

  • @McAlpaca
    @McAlpaca 3 года назад +33

    This isn't a totally unfair comparison - it shows that those coming over compare favourably with the population already here. The conversation was never about how immigrants to the UK compare with emigrants from it.

    • @rainbowevil
      @rainbowevil 2 года назад +7

      Well it’s a counterpoint to accusations of foreigners coming over here and sitting around claiming benefits and not contributing etc. Obviously it’s not a good comparison if you want to compare how good the countries themselves are, but that’s not the purpose, because most Brits who vote for things like Brexit don’t care how good Poland’s education system in isolation.

      My comment has nothing to do with the referendum vote. Rather the way that our media personalities look down their noses at our country and its people and paint Europe as some utopia. Britain is not perfect and has its problems, but listening to these celebs anyone would think we are a bunch of feckless types while our European neighbours are all intellectuals. Hardly an accurate picture. A shame....as I used to quite like Hislop and Merton.

      You're not helping. You not understanding the point of the feature only shows how much more appealing young, educated immigrants willing to work for less are in the employment sector compared to the average Brit.

      In the UK we have spent the last 40 years vandalising a once great education system (e.g. closing grammer schools, turning all the polytechnics into 2nd rate universities and replacing grants with fees). The result is a collapse in social mobility and wasted human capital (and skills shortages in key STEM areas).At the same time our political and business leaders (like many across the west) have become addicted cheap foreign labour where wages can be lower and all the costs of education outsourced in many cases to the very poorest countries that need skilled people to stay and aid in development. The current arrangements benefit big businesses and the politicians who work with them (often too closely) . The ones paying the price are the UK working class and the countries who lose qualified doctors/engineers after having paid to educate them. Please tell me where I am wrong here?

      The feature had no point to make other than a like for like comparison between the average native and immigrant. The only really useful metric to use this information against is employment but it's up to the viewer to make that decision or not. There was no sneering or bias to either side and if you believe the poor, wimpy Brits need to be stood up for then you're only making a counter-argument to your views surely? And I'm saying this in the nicest possible terms!
      As for your views, this really isn't the time or place for such debate and I'm certainly no expert on the matter although I've heard quite a bit from either side of the debate. Quite frankly it's out of any of our hands no matter how many votes we have as far as I'm concerned. I agree educated immigrants should stay at home but they clearly don't want to! As for the labourers, the more the merrier if you ask me. Your heroic nationals tend to not want to get out of bed to pick veg in the rain these days. And I don't blame them for that attitude either! We need immigration but only for those willing to take those jobs. You don't hear that much though do you...
