ok I know noone cares but the flame doesn't come from mount Olympus. It comes from Olympia, a place in the Peloponnese were the ancient Olympics took place ..... I do know it's not important
A truly classic episode with (Canadian) Capt. Kirk showing lots of natural humour and joining in with British humour seamlessly! He's not afraid to laugh at himself and seems really good company.
He’s actually one of my favourite comedians and has a wry, absurdist tone. His early 90s sketch show was brilliant. He was one of the original Whose Line contestants. He had a couple of 2000s comedy travel documentaries too. Unfortunately, he ended up feeling bitter about not becoming the biggest name in comedy generally, and his shtick on the later decades of HIGNFY became… meta-jokes about people not laughing at his jokes, being overly wooden and not laughing at anyone else’s jokes but relying on a repetitive distant act of nodding and frowning, going for bizarre in a routine way whether or not it’s funny, etc. He somehow comes across as an unfunny and unlikeable on the show and I think bitterness at his early 90s stint not taking off was part of it. In fairness I don’t get why it didn’t take off either, so I can sympathise. But he’s still a successful household name, and he should try harder and laugh at others more
I absolutely loved that five minutes in Pail Merton interrupts to say just how delighted they are to have William Shatner on. I was thinking the same thing!
I think Shatner did an amazing job. I don’t think he understood a word anyone said!!! And he could still work with it. Brilliant! I still get a kick out of his intonation when he ad libs about Ilfracombe being ‘laced with prostitution’ I gather law suits followed this!!!
Shatner actually got a reference to his original twilight zone appearance into the show. Gremlins. I'm absolutely loving this episode. So happy i caught this, even years later.
Just watching this again. I noticed that he made reference to "gremlins" which went largely unnoticed - but this was probably a reference to one of his earliest appearances on TV - in a Twilight Zone episode about a gremlin that he sees outside the airplane he is flying on.
William Shatner is awesome. He has a brilliant sense of humor and is not afraid to poke plenty of fun at himself. I especially loved 38:00 - “Fuck off, we’re closed!" and 39:10 - “BAM! Mail this!” LOL One of the best HIGNFY episodes ever.
Surreal. I've never laughed so hard at HIGNFY. Shatner was cringeworthy but in the best way possible. At the very end, he screwed up the names of the contestants 3 times and he screwed up the final score 3 times. I'm bookmarking this episode.
I like the picture of the two wrestlers at the end. I had a VP at my former employer who would make us do whatever other departments wanted, no matter how stupid and unreasonable the request. I often said "he wants us to be so far up their ass that he couldn't tell where they end and we begin".
When Mr. Ayoade had the host's chair, he mentioned T.J. Hooker, which was a shoutout in a way. I love that so many commenters are pointing out Mr. Shatner's nationality... okay, Mr. Murdoch isn't his fault either. At the same time, that Mr. Shatner did not correct Mr. Merton's error seems graceful. After all, grace is more important than country. Edit: 'Paul Morton'; 'Ian Hilsop' ~ those should be their names forever now. What a shame they didn't beam Mr. S up at the end.
I have always will be a big fan of this show, it’s spontaneous and you don’t know what’s coming at you..so you feel you must watch it every week! On this particular episode all of it worked so well together with everyone on the panel. William Shatner in charge: absolutely brilliant..all the links.. the gags..the whole thing made me really laugh!, and it was a big surprise too, because like me, you probably have never seen him in this sort of role...and what a great pro he is... Loved it! Keep doing it boys,.. it works.. it’s funny.. Coronavirus restrictions necessary...doesn’t matter, the screens work good... it’s the talent on board that makes this show what it is...great television!
Tbh, i have avoided the Shatner thumbnail as suggested by my friendly and predictable algorithms for some years now, what a mistake. The most anarchic episode ever and utterly fckn hilarious. I laughed myself silly
Excellent show and great guests! Really hilarious! I think I may try to adopt that new swear word Charlie Brooker invented - very funny and people won't know what I'm saying!
"It's not ours! it belongs to Mr Murdoch; he's yours! He's an American." It's not Bill's; he's Canadian and Murdoch isn't ours, he's Australian. Don't make us re-animate Robert Maxwell, Ian!
William Shatner a real icon his Denny Crane in Boston Legal is just perfect. At 91 years of age a real treasure a great Canadian and technically an Astronaut.
More Shatner-y goodness that may make you think: Invasion Iowa, Better Late Than Never, The Captains. The first one's hard to find, but BLTN is on Hulu and Captains are on Amazon Prime.
Can't recall an episode where there was so much genuine laughter among all 5 on stage... infectious.
I think it took a while for Bill to get it but he grabbed it pretty quick. Brilliant.
The Brian Blessed one.
The Blessed one seemed a little forced to me. Brian Blessed trying too hard to be funny, in my opinion. This one was genuinely funny.@@karry299
@@karry299 I watched that last night (1st time for me, being an ex-pat) I think the Brian one just shades it.
Shatner is the King. Never seen the panel applaud a host before.
Ian didn't :)
Enjoyed it famously !!!!!
the best episode of all ,
So that's them had representatives from both the Federation and Gallifrey.
23:24 Bill shatner got to go to space in 2021
Charlie Brooker is a funt.
14:06 Brooker entirely misses the point. it's tradition and ceremonial. the flame has to come from mount Olympus. He needs a cultural boost....
ok I know noone cares but the flame doesn't come from mount Olympus.
A good egg as we say.
Shatner was truly amazing... He should have been given a few more shows to present
Any episode with genuine laughter from Paul Merton, you know it's going to be a belter.
He's the one that always stares at the Teleprompter as if he's hoping the jokes will jump out at him, right?
He’s actually one of my favourite comedians and has a wry, absurdist tone. His early 90s sketch show was brilliant. He was one of the original Whose Line contestants. Possibly the best presenter ever. Shatner has a great sense of humour.
OgBs Off grid. Agreed! Gloriously funny, bizarre in parts and the most fun I've had watching any episode. Shatner was brilliant.
you should see bryan blessed's...
Apparently he can be a real asshole behind the scenes, according to some people's accounts of working with him
Wonderful episode ☺️
I think Brian Blessed was better but he was in his element. Shatner is a foreigner coming in cold and he nails it!
I absolutely loved that five minutes in Pail Merton interrupts to say just how delighted they are to have William Shatner on. I was thinking the same thing!
"Have you been to Ilfracombe? The place is LACED with prostitution."
Just imagine - ten years after this show he got launched into space (at 90).
I love how Shatner is so funny and having so much fun while knowing absolutely nothing about most of these stories.
I think Shatner did an amazing job. I don’t think he understood a word anyone said!!! And he could still work with it. Brilliant!
I still get a kick out of his intonation when he ad libs about Ilfracombe being ‘laced with prostitution’ I gather law suits followed this!!!
Bill Shatner, Canada's gift to the world. You're welcome.
Thank you. We'll take Neil Young too. Now, about Celine...
No, Justine Trudeau thinks it is.
Can we send back Michael J Fox? He's malfunctioning..
@Kyrie Riley You're right. Nobody cares..
My favourite episode ever with a genuine legend being a good sport. 👍 ❤
Shatner was hilarious. Who would have thought that he'd take on British humour with such class?
Thanks for sharing this!
He's Canadian... so not totes absorbed in the US System... DENNY CRANE!
Yes, but French Canadian...

Marvellous!!! on a paar with other classic episodes with the likes of Brian Blessed, Tom Baker and Bruce Forsyth.

This was FANTASTIC I don't remember the last time I laughed so much during an XL HIGNFY ep.
This must be the best episode ever made. William Shatner is just a brilliant host.
Piece of TV history, utterly ridiculous and remarkable
I'm not a Shatner fan either, but this was a very funny episode. Thanks for the upload!
This is brilliant .. Shatner...and HIGNFY
Just watching this again. I noticed that he made reference to "gremlins" which went largely unnoticed - but this was probably a reference to one of his earliest appearances on TV - in a Twilight Zone episode about a gremlin that he sees outside the airplane he is flying on.

Shatner was a hoot. One of the best ones yet.
The best American to play Kirk was a Canadian. Well done, Canada.
Even the yanks can’t be blamed for Murdoch, he is a Melburnian and we are bitterly ashamed of it. And sorry..
The entrance was brilliant and then it just kept getting better!
What a bizarre episode.
Bill might just be the funniest host I've seen on HIGNFY. Thanks BH!
Best episode ever!!
My favourite episode...Shatner is a legend..😊
William Shatner...legendary eternally.

I like that the set designer made Shatners chair like the Captains chair.

So glad in all my time binging these there was still a jewel to find. I'm not even a Shatner fan, I only clicked play when I saw Andy Hamilton's name.
This was hilarious!! Right up there with the episodes hosted by Brian Blessed.
Nova Lena indeed these 2 are the top episodes ever
Bruce Forsyth !
I want to add Mr. Bill Bailey's name to the list of great hosts. I want to.
Shatner, Blessed and Tom Baker = top three episodes.

That's right - let a Canadian and a heck of a guy host the show, eh? Good job, buddy! You did your country proud!
Didn't expect William Shatner to be so witty.
S K Nassif yes, i enjoy this program alot. He was fabulously funny. The queen and the ink.. Here mail this!! 😂

I was surprised at how funny Shatner was - it was a great show
shatner's a good sport for doing this
Shatner. Legend!
im off to Ilfracombe.... bet they loved that!
I wonder if Shatner has seen Charlie Brooker's segment on his acting in the Twilight Zone?

Murdoch is a naturalized American citizen. Shatner remains a "green card" holder (legal permanent resident).
Both Shatner and Murdoch are American citizens
