J.D. Shaw's mellophone solo in '91 was just impeccable, along with the the way the entire ensemble handled the rubato and phrasing. If you don't nail the musical impression the drill doesn't matter.
Since 2012 was my rookie year I have to be biased because PR's color guard was just so beautiful and talented that year! It was a blessing to get to watch that show live
The 91 Phantom Regiment just sends chills up and down my spine, they KILLED it, especially with that company front. My band teacher had a video tape of the 91 Summer Music Games and I remember watching it over and over and over again. I'm surprised I didn't burn a damn hole in the cassette!!!!
Word! Best arrangement. Some of the others were less musically appropriate to the original (without naming names) but this was far and away a killer performance. Every heroic work like this has to have a moment when the brass just turns and parts the audiences' hair, and this was one, however quickly it passed. Bravo!
I agree Duane. The 91 Phantom Regiment was one of the first DCI shows I watched in high school. My band director was a big DCI fan and the whole marching band sat in the band room watching the 91 Summer Music Games. I was in awe of their talent. One of our instructors also marched playing trumpet for PR which was very cool. I went to some DCI shows in the late 90s and enjoyed them.
@@JB-ug5mf my band teacher had a bunch of DCI tapes that I ended up absconding with before I graduated, lol. I would watch those tapes day in and day out, in constant awe of it all!
He must have missed them! I was a clarinet player but wished I played brass or drums after I heard those shows. What high school did you go to? I went to a school in the Philadelphia suburbs.
Both PR versions are exceptional but I was on tour for 2012 and got to see the PR show all summer. The highlight was on Finals night. I watched from the second row after being invited by some PR staff to watch the show with them. Brings back so many feelings.
‘91 Regiment but Troopers deserve a well earned honorable mention. I loved the transition from the tango into Nessun and the overall subtlety. They took an iconic piece and made it their own.
Foe me- 1991 Phantom the ensemble with the, in my opinion perfect rubato for this piece. Phantom defines classical music, and this is the perfect example!
i saw 2012's Phantom at my first ever DCI show my Sophomore year.and it made me love DCI. Being a Saxophonest there wasnt really a spot for me without learning a new intrument so a fan i became. The '91 has the grace and sticks to the opera, but '12 is just pure RAW emotion. Vanguard took a ballad approach to it, while does sound lovely, not my cup of tea. Troopers kind of went back the way of '91 mixed with Vanguard. Its this epic poem coming to its grand finale. Hats off on the final note cause DEAR GOD. '12 will forever be one because of the moment shared with it. Stylistically Troopers have a damn good close second.
There is no one overall winner. In terms of the drill design Phantom from 2012 for sure. But for musicality and emotion I'm going to have to give it to '91 Phanton
'91 Phantom Regiment is the best for me. My high school marching band director showed us the Summer Music Games shows and I was hooked. I used to listen to the '92 SMG CDs a lot and would turn up the CD player at max volume when no one was home. I hope everyone reading this is doing well and enjoying all the 90s DCI shows on CD and RUclips. 😀
The '91 Regiment show with out a doubt. I am a little biased because it's the first time I ever saw DCI live. You could feel the music through the musicians on that field ( the power of the G Horns). The best all around show of this clip. Phantom Director David St. Angel and everyone that was apart of that show made me a Phan for life.
1991 PR. No contest. The first and only show I thought of when I saw the title of the video. Hard to beat the shows of the mid-80s through the mid-90s.
J.D. Shaw's mellophone solo in '91 was just impeccable, along with the the way the entire ensemble handled the rubato and phrasing. If you don't nail the musical impression the drill doesn't matter.
Totally agree. I was on the field very close to J.D and it was absolutely impeccable and and just mesmerizing it was so beautiful.
91 PR is THE standard for this piece. I played this with Regiment in 96 as a part of our showcase set, and I loved hitting the hits every time.
91 Phantom does the best musical version. 2012 Phantom's drill has more velosity and demand. Both are outstanding!
I would agree with this! good description! they both are amazing!
Since 2012 was my rookie year I have to be biased because PR's color guard was just so beautiful and talented that year! It was a blessing to get to watch that show live
All of em From the solo in 91 to that last train horn note of Troopers! Such a LOVELY PIECE.
Both of the Phantom Regiment performances are impeccable. I saw the 2012 performance and it was amazing!
"91 Regiment by far. More emotion from the arrangement.

@@JB-ug5mf I played drums my entire band career, was in the drumline all through marching band, (from 10th-12th). Went to Osbourn HS in VA!
1991 PR, the diamond standard.

As a non-musician, long-time drum corps fan - I loved them all!!!
1991 Phantom is the most true to the original, therefore the best for me!
91 cause capes. If only they let us wear capes in '12
91 Phantom remains the gold standard.
They all give chills!
Regiment ‘91. It’s not even close
Foe me- 1991 Phantom the ensemble with the, in my opinion perfect rubato for this piece. Phantom defines classical music, and this is the perfect example!

'91 for me is iconic. It set the standard for the piece that hasn't yet been reached, even by these other wonderful shows.
Phantom regiment in first and second. (Torn between the two)
Not even watched the video.. don't need to... 1991 Phantom every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Love JD’s solo but the music in 2012 seems more impactful, like a punch in the gut of raw emotion and power.
That’s because of all the amplification that’s going on, Imo 91 was more raw and emotional
@@rickgregoire2155 No amplification in that clip except on the soloist so point still stands.
1991 is the most beautiful opener of all time
Pavoratti. But got chills on Troop's last note just now. All are awesome!
PR always is the most elegant
PR 91 by a large margin.
The sheer musicality of the arrangement mirrored the emotion far more than the others.

91 solo incredible 👏 loved the Troopers finale ❤
2012 Regiment, thought it was close with 1991 Regiment
4:47 Clearly the best
This is clearly PRs ballpark. Whatever year. Total respect to all corps, but this belongs to Phantom Regiment.
You stealing my ideas DCI?? I see how it is!
That one did the best.
Loved the 1991 Phantom.
91 PR
2012 Phantom
2012
Really? This is even a question? 91!
2012 Regiment!
Phantom 91
Anything using the G bugles is better. 😁 This coming from an old PR alum.
