    Umbrella needs to stop cutting corners with their transfers! They charge more than Arrow does for these editions and most of the time they don’t do any kind of new scan or restoration. Half of the value of a 4K disc is the capability of HDR! The increase in resolution isn’t that significant on its own, HDR is really necessary to give 4K discs the wow factor they can have. Very disappointing that a company is putting so much effort into the bells and whistles but doesn’t put the work into the main component of the product.

      It does seem strange that the deleted scenes have HDR, yet the main feature doesn't - wondering if its a rights issue and its being reserved for a future release perhaps. The blurb on their website lists this as being a new restoration, so its either that, an error or a cheapout I assume.

      Thanks for the info regarding the HDR - and congrats for your part in producing this disc.

      Totally agree. You took the words out from my mouth and thoughts. They don't do squat on their 4K's....they package everything up nice, but that's as far as they go.
      Weird Al 4K - had no DV, yet the Shout US 4K does.
      Razorback 4K - SDR
      Super Mario 4K - SDR
      Talk to Me - No Dolby Atmos, yet the US 4K did.
      I really want to support Umbrella, and I really wanted the big Mario 4K in the beginning...but once word was going around it was only SDR (and Pathé having the rights), I knew that someone else down the line will do a better job on a restoration (here's looking at you Second Sight).
      I would bet cold, hard cash that had Umbrella been a bit more transparent and mentioned it had no HDR, a good chunk of ppl wouldn't have bothered buying the Mario 4K release.
      Possession also is SDR and we all know Second Sight's release of that is going to BLOW Umbrella's release out of the water.

    I never saw the movie, but remember the marketing for it quite well. It had such bad reviews, I had no interest. But with the hype around this release, I was intrigued to give it a chance. I got the full set that comes with the 500 page book. That book is worth the upgrade for the behind the scenes study of this film. I watched the work print first, then the 4k print. I was entertained. I can see why people were disappointed as the film does not satisfy the expectations of a Nintendo Mario film.
    As a stand alone film, it does satisfy. I was entertained. It took me back to all those films of the era. Back to the Future, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, etc. I am not disappointed that spent the extra funds for the larger set.

    Pathè cheaped out with this, not allowing Umbrella to go through with an HDR pass on the main film itself. Still, the overall resolution and the color grading we got was alright (seeing them in their iconic costumes was a highlight). I wasn't a fan of the deep black levels though as they seemed too inky or badly rendered (the cave sequences are the worst with these).
    I think getting the cheaper standard two-disc Blu-Ray set is the better bet here. You still get everything from this 4K release. Maybe someone like Second Sight or Arrow could give this film a pass in the UK and possibly get the HDR done but only time will tell.

    Was curious what region the blu-ray disc is for this release? Usually they're B, but the description never said. Thanks

      I am pretty sure they are Region Free as are most of Umbrella releases.

    Honestly, I'm not too bummed about the lack of HDR because I don't personally own an HDR TV. It would have been nice, but, oh well. It's also one less thing to worry about when encoding a personal copy to watch on the go

    • @RetroReels
      @RetroReels  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thats OK for your situation, but it should be a minimum requirement of the format to have at least HDR 10. BTW - if you are converting rips of these discs to SDR - just put them through Handbrake and use the REC 709 colourspace under filters😉

    Do you get custom charges from ordering from Umbrella into the UK ?

      I didnt get any with this, although I have ordered their upcoming more expensive Masters of The Universe release - will find out then I guess - but general rule of thumb I think is anything under £135 "SHOULD" go through fine.

    Is this region free? I see a lot of people saying it’s actually region B. Maybe they just don’t understand 4K and are trying to play it on regular Blu-Ray player?

    • @RetroReels
      @RetroReels  7 месяцев назад

      The 4K is region free as are 99.9% of them. The Bluray disc in the collectors edition may be locked to B, however most Umbrella releases are marked B, but actually not region coded.

  • @Shawn-s3m

    I don't understand the complaints. Compared to the DVD the movie looks phenomenal. Watching it as I speak. I don't see the issue, I'd call it one of the best transfers we've ever gotten

    • @RetroReels
      @RetroReels  8 месяцев назад

      The complaint isn't what it is, its what it could have been with little extra work - HDR10 is usually a bare minimum standard for 4K UHD discs, and has come to be expected as such. The reasons for the absence of HDR has been explained on a few comments on this video - it was a restriction by the rights holders who wouldn't / couldn't provide Umbrella permission to further alter what they had been provided with.

      Which version did you order? I was a bit bummed out to discover there was no HDR as I thought it would add so much more, especially on a film such as this with rich colours - I would have been alot more dissapointed if I'd have shelled out for the more expensive set.

    • @clewsys_movie_corner

    Could the absence of the HDR be an accident?

    • @RetroReels
      @RetroReels  8 месяцев назад +2

      @EchoesN64 who claims he was a co-producer of the disc answered this question on another comment -
      " _The 4K scan of the theatrical film was comissioned and provided to Umbrella by Pathé, the rights holder to the film in France. Umbrella did not grade it in HDR because they work directly from the source. However, as they did not handle the scan themselves, they opted not to touch the transfer they were given.
      On our end, the deleted scenes were being worked on before we learned the film would be presented in SDR. Bigger Pictures already graded the raw footage himself, and reversing that would've taken a lot of time since they'd have to start over from scratch. It wasn't an option given the tight schedule. So, as requested, Umbrella presented those scenes as they were graded and edited with HDR.
      We did offer our own assistance in grading the 4K transfer in HDR for Umbrella, but this couldn't happen as we didn't have the proper approval and clearances to access the material from Pathé.
      I wouldn't expect another re-release with HDR from Umbrella. This seems to be their definitive "be all, end all" release. But, here's hoping another distributor will issue an HDR version (Second Sight, maybe?)"_

    • @ryandavid4840
      @ryandavid4840 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@RetroReelsok thanks for that explanation. Now I’m wondering if I should cancel my preorder and just wait for another company like Second Sight to put out an HDR version . Do you think the extras alone on this disc are worth it? $40 seems way too much for a disc that doesn’t have HDR. What are the chances these same extras would be available on a Second Sight release?

    • @RetroReels
      @RetroReels  8 месяцев назад +2

      Thats purely down to your own appreciation of the material etc. You know sods law though - if you buy it you'll end up with another release in the future, and if you dont you wont. If you are going to watch all of the features and listen to the commentaries etc I'd say that there is more than enough value to justify the price.
