tks for this. what about small detailed object?. dark or metallic items? did you test on these things, really interested to know how it handled small details on carvings and similar things
Great questions. So as I think you can probably see it handles small details really well, BUT that's when the small detail is part of a larger object this scanner is really not designed for scanning smaller objects on their own, for that you want a blue light scanner like their mini (I should do a video on that). Metallic materials are an issue as they are with all 3d Scanners. Solved using some scanning spray which turns them white temporarily. Similar with black objects, not I've found even if I don't want the colour info turning that in so the flash works really helps with this and as I showed you can pause, change the exposure, do the black parts, and go back to the rest after with a lower exposure which is awesome. I will say satin/shiney black is an issue but again that's true of all scanners if you can't put on the scanning spray.
I've been looking for a scanner to scan heads, faces, and full bodies. I've been reading mixed things about this scanner but your video is pretty impressive, especially the scan at 8:00. How much work did you have to do to clean up the scan? I'm new to 3D scanning/cad software and I don't want to spend hours cleaning things up before I can print something. Thanks.
None of the scans shown had any clean up past what the software does itself, I wanted to clearly show what the scanner can do.
I just purchased myself a Range 2 a few weeks ago and am actually blown away by it personally. It's my first 3D scanner, and it feels a little like magic honestly.
One thing I'm struggling with however is model cleanup. Could you possibly consider doing a video on 3D scan cleanup? There seems to be a lot of common issues/artifcacts from 3D scanning in general like holes in mesh (ones that Revoscan won't automatically fill) and those pesky multi-layered meshes you get when your subject (i.e. a human) moves even slightly when you've scanned the same spot twice.
Would love to see more 3D scanning content in general as there's definitely a serious dearth of GOOD and non-surface level (pun intended) 3D scanning content on RUclips.
I'll definetly do some videos on 3d printing cleanup in Blender. I have a few ideas planned. I just need to be a bit careful as they always seem to get lower views and cost me a few subscribers 😅 I'm guessing because it's outside the standard Blender niche.

You gotta give the people what they want 👍 You could definitely gear such a video more towards your audience I think, e.g. if you had've gone further with the "Make yourself a marine" video and actually added your head onto a marine model, that would be insanely good modeling content IMO. Just food for thought 😊

While this can capture small details it needs to reference larger parts so it can orient itself. It isn't made to do small parts their own. For that you'd want the MINI2: shrsl.com/4ek31

amazing video as always, how does it cope with smaller objects? what do you think is the smallest it could go before it starts losing track and fidelity?
Good question. I'd need to test it further but because of the way the tracking works its a bit hard to say. For example a button on my trousers came out perfectly, but if that button was by itself this would have no chance, for that you'd want one of the blue light scanners like the Pop3 (medium sized objects) or the mini (small objects). What are you looking to scan? Then I could give a bit better advice.
@@ArtisansofVaul i actually recently got the 3DmakerPro seal+ but am having all kinds of problems with tracking on items larger than a can of coke for example, i know you have already said in previous videos that using the right scanner for the job is key, but i was hoping to have something that can scan ~30mm through to 250/300mm in one easy to use unit - its probably just not possible. im new to scanning so im maybe just being rubbish but i cant help but feel that the Seal is maybe not that good in comparison or is just harder to use in general that other units that have also come out the last 6 months
as a side question, have you ever considered making a paid for Blender hard surface tutorial series for Udemy (or other system)?? i've learnt so much from you already (literally you are the best) and i would snap your arm off for a focused 20 odd hour series based on modelling for 3D printing

Just got mine using your code, thanks for that! Do you remember how many frames were taken for the full body?
I don't I'm afraid. But I have don't it again in 3 rotations instead of the 5 we did then and then a few extra scans of areas that werent perfect, that vastly reduced the amount of frames. I'm really tempted by their rotating turntable that you can stand on to make it even more efficient.
Great review dude, nicely walked through and shows the results really well. How do you think it will fit into your current workflow?
I think for larger parts it will be really valuable. Admittedly I generally work on small miniatures so it's a bit less helpful for me but the school I work at has a group that each year redesigns a small electric race car and competes against other schools. They can only redesign the body work but this will really help scanning the "naked" vehicle for the design process. I'm also pretty hyped to be able to scan larger objects and then shrink them down for gaming.
The main thing was just how easy it was to use. A couple of points after testing I was like "I could scan this" and just did it because it was so quick to get out and get scanning without the limitation of cables. And the software made it really reliable. I think I had one failed scan using this so far and that's because the person I was scanning sneazed and moved so much it was impossible for them to get back into the same position. And even then the scanner got pretty close to making it work, there were just some gaps that when filled in would look odd. So it can deal with a lot of problems.
I do wish I had the turntable though for scanning people, that would help a lot
@ArtisansofVaul sounds like an awesome project! I'm a mechanical engineer myself so the idea of reverse engineering being taught in schools is fantastic! loving the wireless idea of this scanner, I have to scan aircraft cockpits sometimes and use an artec Leo for those but these seem like a much better deal, whats the wieght like? if I'm using the Leo for 8 hours a day I definately know about it!!
@tabletopscanman It's really fun and the students really enjoy it. This is pretty light. The ball joint allows you to get some pretty good angles on hard to reach places and according to the Revopoint site it weighs 253grams and I can believe that, it's very easy to hold and keep working with.

I can honestly say I haven't had this much fun with a 3d scanner before and I've had various models over the years. I just hope revopoint keep up them being this fool-proof as they make them a lot of fun to play around with and get good results.
I have Range, which is good but doesn’t track as good as this appears to do.

Out of interest did the original have the 9axis tracking? Ive found that has made a big difference when I compare similar models with and without it.
6:36 that’s amazing tech is so portable now a days imagine back in the days this same tech would of been the size of a car 😂

@@ArtisansofVaul for some reason a had a flash back to the 90s when I was a kid and I was always really observant of tech in that era everything was like x5 the size of the things we have today, example our cell phones keep shrinking and getting thinner each year.

Good review, but how well does it scan small things? Say miniature versions of people and things...
So it won't scan small things particularly well. They have a scanner (the mini) designed for that and then one that is a bit more of a jack of all trades but it's more expensive because of that and (I imagine) it needs more lenses/etc. So it will depend what you want to scan really because the technology used (blue light for small objects for example) is totally different

How did it do on face detail? I imagine you didn't want to show that for privacy reasons, was it as detailed as your pants? It seemed a bit blurry from the far away rotated shot, but can't be sure.
It was pretty good. I actually sneezed through the scan 🤣 So it was a bit "blurred". I took one since and it was pretty impressive. It doesn't do long hair well bur no 3D Scanners do, so that's something to be aware of.

Not working great with hair is an interesting one to be aware of. How long will your code be good for? Also, I need to do polished metal. Do you recommend a scanner spray.
@simonjacksparrow I've tried the scanner spray and it can obscure fine details a little. I actually found a white spray paint to be a bit better but then you've ruined the thing your scanning so it balances on the situation. If ita flat metal then the spray is great (when I say it obscured detail a bit that was on a 28mm tall miniature so the details were finer than you'd be trying to capture with the RANGE2. If the code isn't working I can check for a new one too. What are you looking to scan?
@ArtisansofVaul would love to be able to get a decent scan of smaller figures. But have the flexibility to do arger ones too. Also, work in engineering/ tool making which would be great to capture and produce a ..split to built up video with the scans.. plus bolts. The features on this particular scanner are perfect. How smaller a figure do you think you could get a decent scan from.
Should I wait till the next model. Maybe it will scan smaller things easier too
@simonjacksparrow this is very much not designed to scan smaller objects, it just won't function very well as its not designed for that. I get really good results from the MINI2.

Is this the first time we've seen you on camera? Cool! And that is a fantastic T-shirts.
When you scan a person they move a little, so a bit that was scanned and the next adjacent area to be scanned become a little closer or a little further from each other. The mode for scanning a person probably uses 3D tracking to compensate for that movement to prevent compressions and stretches in the final mesh.
Ah, that's great to know and seems sensible. I find it hard to believe that I was able to stand perfectly still and it still gave a good result so that would make sense.
But does it do minis?
No this wouldn't. Scanners for small parts use a different method (blue light) compared to what can be used for larger parts like this. Unfortunately you won't find a scanner that's capable of doing both unless you look at one very expensive that has both types of camera/lense.

What with overscan issue I mean is the far how it can happen your scan over an area again that you will later have the chances of an offset.
And then compared to the ferret pro the range 2 struggles with so many materials to scan
Yea I could use scan spray for all but the ferret does not need it.
@@ArtisansofVaulthe scan software is nice but I am disappointed about the scanner itself.
We also did some body scans and the feet had blobs and not toes…
@cekuhnen While the ferret is great for scanning certain materials I can't say I've found the issues you have with the RANGE2 (as seen by my results) and I actually found the RANGE2 better for matt black surfaces.

But besides black surface scan issues - my main irritation is surface offsets in the range 2 when scanning furniture / upholstery
