Possibly from the Wheelbase TV series the forerunner of Top Gear.
The introduction of this film voiced concerns about trucks and their operators that where relevant at the time, especially around 'cow boy' operators and smoke emissions. Interestingly some of the comments are contrary to what we now know to be correct today, like the effects of breathing in diesel fumes.
This film also shows some of the latest safety features on Foden trucks of the time.
Finally concluding with an interview with Ron Ellis MD of the British Leyland Truck and Bus Division.

Tell me about it, I drove an 8 wheeler with a 180 in it. blanked the rad off with cardboard apart from 6 inch at the top, worked well for a few months until going up the M18 from the A1 junction , alarm bells and the temp gauge well up, had to pull over and remove it.
If I knew then what I know now, I would have fitted new matrix's both sides, insulated the feed pipes and fitted a Kysor radiator shutter even though it was 10 years old, that's all it needed.

Watching the first few moments of the film I could smell the fresh paint and new tyres on that Scammell! 👍

I accidentally run to this clip! The Scammell Contractor ballast tractor in the background was delivered new to Finnish power company Imatran Voima. It already has their logos on the cabdoors. I don´t know how long it served, but I think it was later sold outside Finland and replaced with Faun.

    Brilliant find.
Can you imagine those alarms going off. I would assume the fuse box was often visited!

I know Reigate Hill well having driven buses up there decades ago. Leyland Atlanteans loaded with school kids would sometimes only manage the very low first gear with plumes of smoke coming out the back.

Seems the interviewer was doing his level best to drag the industry down but the exec had every answer on a plate ready for him .. but let’s be fair even those shiny trucks there could never hold a candle to the new volvos and scanias that were imported into the country .. Volvo F88 was 10 years ahead of its time ... great film BTW.

I too went to this show with my dad who was a hgv mechanic in them days he was called by all a fitter, great days, the buffalo they were standing in front of had the 500 fixed head engine, get a good one and they were great! Unfortunately most were rubbish! Underdevelopment because the car side of bl was being systematically brought down by the unions,

that's an aec av 760 you clown not a Leyland engine'. I worked at AEC LTD on engine assembly and on some export engines we had to put a british Leyland monogram badge on. the marathon also had a Leyland badge but we made them at AEC LTD until we closed in may 1979

Not much has changed it seems, unfortunately. The haulage industry still has a bad image, and more needs to be done to promote a good one.Just look at the respect the Europeans have in their native countries.
As for car drivers,a change for the worst,as standards dip.
    What more to be said...

In 1972, in the USSR, they drove heavy trucks and could not dream of such machines. Hey, unfortunate commentators who make fun of their auto industry of the 70s, have you ever even seen a monster in real life called the MAZ-500, and even cooler than the KAZ-606? I'm silent so that they manage ...
It is no wonder that the tin can that appeared in 1976, called KamAZ-5320, seemed to Soviet citizens some incredible, fantastic device from the distant future. 😁

@@SMayleification Thank you for translating my comment! As for those who like to whine literally from everything, this is, in my opinion, a global disaster. But ! I used to think that in Russia it is even more pronounced. Hypertrophied, in a word. How many more. And mostly negative. National feature, yes.
However, you have enlightened me and, one might even say, reassured me with your answer.
In short, we are all smeared with the same world, only the paint is different (Russian folk proverb 😉😁).

It looks very much like a 'L12' to me, which is basically a AEC 'AV760'.

    • @mikehumble1120
      @mikehumble1120 7 лет назад +3

It's the AEC designed AV760. It was developed into the L & TL12 a couple of years after this film was produced.

Typical foden product 30 year old when it dropped off the production line, radiator that folds down {useless} Crusader hinged out far better. 2 getting in and out was like crouching down to get in a dog kennel the list goes on.........SCANIA "king of the road" and STILL been made today all over the world for the world

They were shit wagons full stop that’s why when Volvo and Scania entered the uk Market it was the death of all these OEM …in heartbeat ..uk arrogance poor build quality and seriously underpowered unreliable vehicles that were shit to drive and even worse to overnight in….hardest working thing on that 1st foden apart from the driver is that warning buzzer…I can promise ya if that truck spent 10 hours a day on the road that buzzer will spend 9.5 hours going off 😂

1972 , my how things were different , the truck I drive has Euro 6 emission standards , I doubt the Foden and Leyland would pass any emission test today
