  • A promotional film for the Cunard QE2 liner made in 1969. This has a loose narrative to appeal to the younger traveller. This involves the central character (played by Anna Bentinck), having a close connection with the ship during its construction, which is realised in a journey on the ship with her boyfriend later. It has a very 1960s feel in terms of direction (Art Direction Marilyn Taylor).
Music composed by Graham Collier and his Sextet.
The song "Magic Ride written by Manfred Man and Mike Hug, Sung by Sandy Denny.
The song "Rosemary" written and sung by the Applejacks
It was produced by James Archibald and Associates Ltd.

This is a “magic” gem I was shockingly delighted to have bumped up into my recommendations page. I’ve hardly seen any photos let alone so much FOOTAGE of the ship’s construction. And the distant telephoto shot of the liner going down the slipway that I’ve NEVER seen before! Discretely iconic. Thank you for sharing this.
Another thing that wouldn’t fly today is the random guy taking photos of the same girl with major stocking vibes. Unless it helped fulfill the fantasy element of the promo video. Because I’m not sure how much it would fly then, as different as it was socially.

Thanks for the feedback...I guess much of the subject and editing would not fly today, which seems a pity. I guess we could pick anytime in history and find that which current sensibilities would abhor...this tells us that the current moment has an arrogance about it. A sense that today has reached a false state of perfection, which some think the past fails to attain. I buy in to none of this. This film has to be understood as an artefact of its time...and is as valid and morally worthy as anything of this quality made in any other time...including today.

@@maxustaxus I was echoing some of the other comments mentioning the changing times. I'm completely with you on context based on different time periods and I hope that came across in my comment. It's interesting to see how different social norms impact different time periods and the why and how of it all. I love anthropology and the study of people, cultural behaviors, etc. (and I suspect my Asperger's Syndrome contributes in some way).
Can't get enough of this promo video. And can't thank you enough for posting it and in the quality you have it in. This doesn't look like it's taken from the VHS copy I've heard about, but directly from the negative. I hope this gets a lot of views and attention. It's such a rare and special gem.

Anybody else thinking Health and Safety ? And why there are only about 2 blokes building the entire ship!! Still fascinating.

Yes, it amazing the way they just let her on the ship while under construction. I guess people were braver then. Things would be very different today...and so would the directing...very much of its time I guess!
