    I'm a professional working at a vintage and custom shop in the Cape in South Africa and have a CB550 custom cafe racer build in process with the seat due soon. I enjoy composites work and with my background in aeronautics I've worked on both molded and moldless composite construction and honestly considered the moldless technique for my seat but watching this series has convinced me to make a mold so we can replicate the raw shape on other client's projects. Great work mate subscribed

    Thanks again for showing us the an easy way to do things. I've been trying to figure out what to do about a seat for my cb350. I didn't want a cheap ebay one that would fall apart on the first ride and its pretty expensive for a custom one. It's a full rebuild from engine to electrical and everything else that moves or holds something on, so lots of money spent already. It's good to be able to build what you can where can to keep costs down(and learn something new). Also I don't have the gear to adapt the frame the way I want it , but this video helped me adapt the seat to get what i want. Pretty much! Keep it up.

    Your homemade planer is the shit hahahaha, I use thicker blocks of more of a styrofoam material similar to the American 'pink' foam that is quite dense and a closed cell type like what is used for surfboards, sometimes I actually buy surf blanks. I use a rasp and a kitchen knife primarily as well as a hotwire - I shaped a full size 2 seat aircraft blank using just these tools and methods it works really well and in my opinion is really fun and therapeutic, an eye for form and creativity helps but it's not necessary

    That's the exact process I used to make mine. I used florist foam, which is the same stuff and can be acquired from most hobby shops here in the states. I also worked mine outside, as that foam gets EVERYWHERE, and it's way easier to air off.

    • @CafeRacerGarage
      @CafeRacerGarage  6 лет назад

      Adam McNutt haha I know what you mean. Foam was everywhere lol 😂 this is a lot harder than Florist foam and doesn’t dint as easy, unless we have a different understanding of what florist foam is. We have the dark green stuff here in Australia and it’s relatively soft.

    • @AdamMcNutt
      @AdamMcNutt 6 лет назад

      Yeah, it's green stuff. Mine wasn't sure easy to dent. I used a bread knife for rough cuts, sandpaper and blocks for smoothing. The most memorable thing was foam everywhere and it kinda stinks a little.

    Hey Dan... If you could go back in time a bit... Would you have bought the same sawhorse/vise combo? Tritan Superjaws? Would you have bought a different brand? Would you have bought the XXL version? Has the one you purchased been holding up well? I've been putting this tool purchase/upgrade off for awhile and I'm thinking it's about time to have another "hand" around the shop with that large of a vise capability. Keep up the great work 👍

    Awesome Dan wouldn’t have thought of making it that way plus....I’ve been trying to decide between brat seat (as might need to take passenger occasionally aka the Mrs) or classic cafe racer seat hump. So if I just make two then make them easy to bolt on and off (wing nuts under the support struts) problem solved! Oh and the new tool tray’s look the nuts!

      Steve Masters Hi Steve, thank you so much 😊 yes I love my new tool chests, yes I think the different seat for different occasions is a great idea, I will be doing a 3rd version at some point with a rack on the back to carry camping gear for motorcycle camping 😊 I will make a video on how I do that also. 👍
      Thanks again for your kind words. Ps. I’m not sure how you could even see this video because it’s not even live yet, it goes live tomorrow haha 😂 you got to see it a day earlier than everyone else 😁

    Well done! A question. When you draw the angle at 4.16...how did you do that? Oh and another one! Will the hump be hollow? Like a glovecompartment? Or removable for pillion?

    • @CafeRacerGarage
      @CafeRacerGarage  6 лет назад

      John Mård hi brother. 1. the angle question: I held the pencil in my hand on the bottom of the cardboard where the gap was the largest and used my finger as a guide and running it up the back of the angled piece d cardboard and keeping the distance between my finger and the the pencil the same all the way to the top as I draw the line, 2. The hump: The Hump will have a hollow compartment once it’s complete 👍 3. Pillion: the seat pan and hump will be once pace but the seat can be changed out with just one nut if I decide to take a pillion. This will make sense when you see part 2 next Sunday 👍 thank you for the comment and questions brother 😁

    • @CafeRacerGarage
      @CafeRacerGarage  5 лет назад

      Allen hi mate thank you and I’m glad you are getting a ton of use out of the videos. Florist foam will work but it’s super soft and you will need to be so careful when handling and shaping it. I wouldn’t recommend it but it can still get the job done it you are on a tight budget. Hope that helps mate

    I probably missed it in an earlier ep, but what bike is the tank from? Since the motor is a DOHC, the original tank would have been the one that kinda "flows" down into the side covers.

      Thanks, mate. I'm working on a 1980 CB900 Bol d'Or, and want to get rid of the original gas tank. The only one I've found until now which is to my liking, is from the '76 CB750, and they're not that easy to come around. The one you have, is just about perfect, so that widens my search a little bit.

      camden thompson sorry for the delay in my reply, iv been away camping with a friend. To answer your question. I got the forks online 2nd hand from a guy parting his bike out. Paid $500 for them and they need a seal kit put in them.
