  • This video takes a look at the history of Coracles, and my attempt at building one.
    Skip to 03:33 for just the building process.
    It was completed as part of a school project, and everything, including the building, editing, and soundtrack was done by me.
    For some footage of the coracle on the water, check out my other video: • Coracle paddling on th...

    Wow! As a carpenter, I have wanted to build a coracle for quite a while. Your use of modern materials easily purchased from a store, makes this a more realistic project for me. Thanks. Loved the music.

      Theresa McCune Thank You! It was a fun build, and challenging enough to be rewarding but not so tricky that it was frustrating. Give it a go!

      Hi Sabina, I’m afraid I wasn’t at the Derbyshire wood festival but I’m glad you’ve found the video helpful! Definitely give building a coracle a go, it’s a fantastic project and really not difficult once you get started. Good luck!

    Nice build . Slightly disappointed you haven’t got a vid of it in use .

      There’s an interesting story there. I took a lot of videos of it on its maiden voyage, then used my supposedly waterproof phone to take an underwater shot and it broke the phone completely, losing all the footage. The only video I rescued was, ironically, the under water one because I’d texted it to someone! That video is available on my channel if you have a look, It’s called ‘Coracle first try’ or something like that, and you do see the coracle in action for a few seconds.

    Thanks for making this youtube. I found it very interesting the history of these amazing little craft, and was fascinated watching you actually building your own coracle. I'm going to have a go at building one myself. Was the plywood you used anything special like a marine grade, or just a regular exterior grade available at most DIY stores? What was the glue you used? Regards David.

      David Schwartz Hi David. I’m glad you enjoyed watching it, and it’s great that you’re going to give building one a go! The plywood I used was marine plywood, yes. I thought it was worth using the best quality to hopefully keep the coracle in good condition for as long as possible. I believe the glue I used was Gorilla Glue Grab Adhesive. It seemed to work more than adequately. I wouldn’t use a polyurethane glue unless you’re going to clamp each join tightly and are willing to plane off the excess as it expands when it dries. I’d also do plenty of coats of linseed oil as my frame has begun to mildew already. Best of luck building it and I hope you enjoy using it as well!

    nice video and boat build! It would be nice to see it on the water. Does it float? Do you have a short video of someone rowing it? that wud b great to see

      Thanks! Yes there is one video of someone rowing it on my channel, just look under my videos. But the video has an interesting story attached. I took a lot of videos of it on its maiden voyage, then used my supposedly waterproof phone to take an underwater shot and it broke the phone completely, losing all the footage. The only video I rescued was, ironically, the under water one because I’d texted it to someone! Looks awesome! Did you steam bend/soak the plywood laths before hand? I tried making one before out of 5mm ply but kept snapping even when heated with a heat gun.

    • @CorinNelsonSmith
      @CorinNelsonSmith  4 года назад +1

      Thanks! I didn’t soak them or steam them, just used the heat gun. A couple of mine did snap, even using 3.6mm ply, so 5mm is probably just too thick.

    Hi. I did a similar build to you. I'd be interested in your thoughts on my my one. I also used plywood but at 30mm wide. Please have a look at my Video when you get the chance
