  • We made two different types of basket boat in a day...a Severn type Coracle and a Boyne Currach (primitive basket boats), and floated them on a local reservoir. In this film I highlight constructional issues and how we overcame them. It will be helpful to anyone who is considering building a coracle to see what went well, and what we would improve on next time.

It is great that yourself and your colleagues are so radiant with enthusiasm about the whole project - indeed all of your projects ! The happiest group of people on RUclips - an example to us all ! A happy and positive attitude is the way to go - as I keep reminding myself as I am rebuilding my bathroom... I HAD hoped that you were going to tell us that the skin was one that you had woven from wool that you had spun, made on your hand loom and sewed on your 1960 sewing machine - perhaps that is next year ? Yes - this is a lovely film to watch, just like all of the others that you and your colleagues create ! Thank you !

As that young lady found out, you paddle a coracle from the front. It is strictly a river craft and no white water. The method was for two coracles drifting down the river together and dragging the net between them. When they caught a salmon, the guy on the left would veer right as the other guy(right side) lifted the net and dumped the salmon into his(left side) Coracle. Because of poaching laws, this was done on dark, moonless nights. The old timers tell me that they always went downstream in a 'shell' and walked upstream. A great video to introduce people to the Coracle.

Great effort Harry! Interesting about the greater stability of the flaired and lower center of gravity willow hull. I would have opted for the greater load capacity of the straight side before seeing this.

In the Mesopotamian tablet "The Epic of Gilgamesh" which is an early version of Noahs Ark...The Epic of Gilgamesh tablet translation describes the "Ark" and how The God in the story Enki instructs Gilgamesh to build the Ark (aka Boat) describes a "Coracle Boat"...Which speaks to how ancient Coracle style boats are ...They are likely the first type of large boats constructed as they can be made on a larger scale . As I am reading about this Mesopotamian Tablet I remembered this video. and came here to reference it..which really helped me conceive what the Gilgamesh Ark would have looked like.
I hope you are well my friend!

No judgement at all, but I'm curious. Do Brits not normally grow up learning to swim? Among people in the US that watch British media there's often a sense that Health an Safety can get in the way of a good time, and I'm not sure if that's the case here or if there's legitimate concern that if someone goes in the drink they won't make it to shore. Nice coracles though!

A lot ...possibly most people are taught to swim. I have received a lot of bashing on RUclips for not being safe with tools...it's difficult hitting a balance....but we certainly had lots of fun.

Most English people can swim and as to this bloody health and bloody safety crap if you work for your self you would not get any thing done

Didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on a single person boat, so thought I'd make a basket boat. But looks like I need to buy a bunch of tools and some manpower that might end up costing me at least a thousand dollars anyway lol
