As someone who details cars, I'm definitely scared of cleaning the engine bay but it can be done if you take the right precautions. You're absolutely right!

I always use wet detail rags & sponge's after dry cloth wipe extra wax on tire's instead of drill wheel brush & form car cleaner work's better then liquid wax

It is the height of stupidity to spray water indiscriminately all over leather, engine components, etc. In fact, unless your car has been sitting for years, it probably won't be all that dirty to begin with. If you want to get a feel for where to buy good products, buffing equipment, etc., try Griot's Garage. This is mostly nonsense.
