- For a generation of fans, Judith Durham, AO is the voice of The Seekers, the Australian folk-inspired vocal quartet that took the world by storm in the 1960s. From the coffee shops of Melbourne to main-stages around the world, The Seekers became the first Australian band to sell a million copies and the first to score a simultaneous Top 10 hit in Australia, Britain and the United States. That much of the story we know.
Perhaps less known is the story of a young girl who grew up with a love of jazz and piano, whose shyness coloured all aspects of her career. In our interview, Judith talks to Brian Nankervis about her earliest musical influences, her whirlwind experience with The Seekers, her solo career and what it felt like to knock The Beatles ‘White Album’ off the No.1 spot on the UK charts.

Hi from the USA. What a great interview with a fabulous woman! I have been a fan for years now and have raised two daughters who also enjoy the Seekers music. I would play Morning Town Ride as I was putting my girls down at night and would softly sing along for my daughters. I was married and a young man when The Carnival Is Over came out and my wife and I cried when we heard they were breaking up. Over the years, even though the group was not together we still had their music so we could enjoy their sounds. Now, I am 69 and when it is time for me to lay down for the night, I can turn on the wonderful sounds and bring back the memories of days gone by. My poor neighbors have to put up with my playing the music on loop, but have never had any complaints... 😉!

The context of the Seekers and Judith Durham is truly amazing. What a legacy! When you think of all the wonderful things Judith and many many other musicians have done, the creativity, ingenuity, intelligence and persistence of Humans is amazing. We have what it takes and in order to protect this and ourselves, we must apply all of our qualities to addressing climate change. :) :)

I love the fluency of this interview which is so like a true dialogue. Listening to it knowing that Judith has so recently died, and feeling such a sense of loss yet here Judith is vibrant and with such an aliveness. RIP Judith
It is so sad that she died. She was so sweet and humble, and tried her best to overcome her weaknesses. But this one she couldn’t overcome. I hope she realizes how much people loved her.

Hmmm…..I like this lady a lot. She touches my heart without even knowing her. Amazing. I feel like she is already my friend. She is very humble and came from humble beginnings. She wasn’t looking to be a star, just happened. I always knew she was a good person from seeing her perform, and I was right. Rest In Peace, Judith. You are the kind of person I would love to meet. I’m saddened that I never got to meet you, but knowing how you would react to people who admire you is satisfying. Thanks again!

Hi from EVE in the UK, judith durham has got to be one of the greatest female singers ever, there is NO other group in the world like the seekers, I love all the seekers songs, I have got most of there CDs and DVDS but the one DVD that I have not got is future roads, so if there is any way I could get this DVD would be very happy, Have enjoyed this interview.

Judith may be getting in age, but if you hear her voice with out music,as I heard on abc radio, about 7 years ogo,with Joh Faine,she sang with just a voice, and it was Christal clear and it blew me away,,Their is not many singers that I have heard on RUclips that sings without music,But I didn't hear Judith on this forum but radicand blew me away,John Farnham is another, and the is I bleieve is one other, but lives in the States,but still tingles,Barry Gibb,the rest need to rest.my option only.So how did I come to this result, when hear a singer with out music, to hold a tune, then you know they have an art.

Whether speaking or singing was that God's love and light in your spirit shining out to the world? I am forever thankful Judith Durham. How blessed we were to grow up listening, singing and thoroughly enjoying the voice and melody of such a gifted singer..Simply and purely a true star.. ...thank you for all those many songs and memories.
