I bought this download from Flatpick guitar site, one of the best things I've done to help my learning backup and general guitar skills, that I could not pick up from other players. Thank you for posting this clip.
Anyone who follows Wyatt's tutorial (and tries to keep up) will instantly come to appreciate how amazing of a rhythm guitarist he is. Those chords are not easy transitions in the slightest.
I love them both equally and I am aware of Tony's amazing lead, but I will say after years of listening to Tony I have gravitated to the stuff that he and Wyatt are on. As far as rhythm goes, Wyatt just blows everything out the water when he does his rhythm and he is one of the best rhythm guitarists in the world.
Thank you to Wyatt for sharing this beautiful song. Will always have just a little of Tony's road dust stuck to my "shoe" - meant in a nice way! Thanks for sharing. Wish Wyatt smooth sailing. RIP Tony.
Beautiful piece of music. I just picked up this video and it's amazing. Wyatt is great. If you're looking to expand from basic folk/bluegrass rhythm guitar playing to something more advanced, then this video is wonderful. Even if you just want to watch some masters at work, this is a great pick-up.
I seen the both of the last week in Stillwater Ok They are the best I have ever seen bar none. Don't miss is if yo have the chance to see the Unit . I have seen tons of people live but never any even close to TonY
thanks for the heads up... I saw your comment on Zappas early 70's band w/Ruth Underwood,Napoleon, Duke, Fowler(s), Thompson, etc. I agree completely by far my favorite Zappa band. Saw them with Waits (solo) as the opening act. He also had Ralph Humphreys as a 2nd drummer awsome show. Ah the dear Vassar... lucky enough to see him with O&ITW for the Boarding House sessions. Probably among the few there, who knew he was the real star of the band. The guys in the band all knew.
Love this guy! On his 1st Homespun Tapes series (cassettes in 1983 or '04), Tony laments that "both of my hands are kinda small." Oh, now! I'd pay big bucks to have hands 'that' small. Haha.
I wish Tony and Wyatt would make a Cd of guitar duets like this, just them two, as Tony and John Carlini did a few years ago. Wyatt backs Tony better than anyone.
I love everything from Frank Zappa to Bill Munroe! It took a minute to click with Phish but the more I listened, the more I understood their music. Pink Floyd was also like that for me. I had to listen a few times before I got it. Now I love it! I really think you might enjoy Mike Gordon's first solo album called "Inside-In". He has a lot of great players on there with him. Bela Fleck, Col. Bruce Hampton, Vassar Clements, just to name a few. Try to Google it & see if they offer a few tracks!
Tony Rice is a good ole boy, totally not a Borat! (Neither is Wyatt :P! ) I'd love to see one of those amazing Japanese fingerstyle players try to tackle some of Tony Rice's stuff. If anyone can send me a link of something like that, I'd love to see it. Seems to me that they have so many amazing technical guitarists over there, would love to see them tackle the true soul of Bluegrass.
Don't be sorry! You are 100% correct! Thanks for setting me straight. However I do believe he owns more than 1 Martin. Ever heard the album Tone Poems? Tony & David Grisman play a bunch of songs on their vintage instruments. It comes with a booklet that pictures each instrument & gives much history on each. It's a beautiful album with a great booklet!
Sorry Ded... Tony does own one of the most famous of all Martins, the highly modified (enlarged sound hole, Gretsch blank fretboard, unlabeled headstock) Clarence White D18. But in this video he is playing the Santa Cruz Guitar Company Tony Rice signature model, which is modeled after the White D18, in every detail. His brother Wyatt also appears to be playing one of the Cruz Rice models.
The Tony Rice Unit will be playing Island in the Mountains Fest on Blannahassett Island in Marshall, NC on 08-01-2011 Google Island in the Mountains Fest and come join us on the island.
Nice - Tony playing the Santa Cruz. I sure hope they don't put his Clarence White Martin in a museum. I'd rather see it on stage being played by someone worthy. Last year I saw Marty Stuart playing the original B-Bender at Suwannee Music Park!
Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice have a very similar solo style! Especially on their CD The Pizza Tapes with David Grisman, I could barley tell who was soloing!
Thanks so much for this excellent video! The persons responsible for giving the video a rating below 5 should consider professional psychiatric treatment.
Love Tony, love Doc, love Norman......the best acoustic guitar i have ever heard is an old duo--Batdorf and Rodney----granted it's not bluegrass...check em' out. STUNNING.
I hear a little blues in Jerry's soloing style and not so with Tony. But like what else do you observe as a major difference in their style? Because I still think they sound sort of similar with the notes they choose...
Don't forget Bryan Sutton, David Grier, and Kenny Smith!!! So many great players... how can one truly be the best. And of course, if it weren't for C White, would Tony Rice be who he is?? Happy pickin... S
I think their tones are definitely distinguishable. Their technique, etc. is a big part of that. I can hear a guitar break and tell that it's Tony Rice, can't say that same for Jerry though.
To be honest I like Phish's music best post Billy Breathes disc. The earlier stuff is a bit weird but still a lot of good jams. Mike Gordon's music rocks from the get go. I love every solo project he has done. Forget Google! They only offer lame samples. Mike has done 2 albums with guitarist Leo Kottke. Both are available on Myspace audio player. You can listen to the entire albums. Just search myspc music for Leo Kottke! The albums are called 66 Steps & Clone! Hope you like it!
Maybe I need to hear more stuff, but on this video and the Pizza Tapes they sounded really similar. I tend to think Tony Rice sounds a little more refined than Jerry though.
This is a great clip and Tony is fantastic but for all around best flat-picker, I'd have to give that to Norman Blake. The sheer complexity with the combinations of rhythm, melody, and cross-picking of the stuff he plays puts him above Doc (who I think is great) in my opinion. Check out "Norman Blake, Flatpicker" on RUclips. I hear a lot of Norman in much of what Tony Rice plays.
Amazing. Long live Tony Rice! I would love for any Tony fans out there to comment on the clips of my original music. I'm a flatpicker inspired by brazilian rhythms and bluegrass. Thanks.
I checked the winfield site and I saw no mention of JP ever in the top 3. If I'm wrong, let me know. Not sure if Tony ever entered a Winfield contest. Winning a contest proves the winner is really good, but some of the greatest flatpickers have never won winfield. Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, David Grier, ect... Even Mark O' Connor says that he has lost more than he's won.
@flatpikinguitar Actually, Tony did NOT do a lot of cocaine in the 70s. In his recent biography he states that he ALWAYS stayed away from coke. Beer, reefer, and coffee, now that's another story. Not sure what your source is for the coke comment, maybe you just assumed that because everybody else was doing coke in the 70s that Tony did too.
double check the liner notes... they do not own most of those instruments. The Tone Poems series is GREAT, but like the Tone Poets 2cd set, which spins the concept into various players on two instruments, for the most part they used instruments they borrowed for the recordings. That being said, Rice probably does own more than one Martin. He does have a few of the Cruz guitars too.
T rice is the bomb. he borrowed from Clarence, and pracitcally every picker out there borrows from T. Sooooo tasty and technically sick. what more is there to say.
R.I.P Tony Rice, Christmas Day 2020. What an absolute talent.
Aren't we a lucky bunch to be living in a time where all this is recorded in excellent quality. Moments captured for generations to come!
I bought this download from Flatpick guitar site, one of the best things I've done to help my learning backup and general guitar skills, that I could not pick up from other players. Thank you for posting this clip.
I found this now
Anyone who follows Wyatt's tutorial (and tries to keep up) will instantly come to appreciate how amazing of a rhythm guitarist he is. Those chords are not easy transitions in the slightest.
How can anyone dislike this it’s a lesson from the legend who wrote the stairway of bluegrass
I've been playing guitar for about 25 years or so , metal , death metal , shred, jazz. In my opinion Tony rice is the best guitarist alive.
Boy, no one has tonys level of smoothness. His guitar playing should be declared a world intangible heritage by unesco
Rice brothers. Tony is a national treasure, and inspiration to many.
Wow those Santa Cruz guitars sound wonderful!
A real pleasure to see two brothers so gifted. Long live The Rice Bros.
Thank you to Wyatt for sharing this beautiful song. Will always have just a little of Tony's road dust stuck to my "shoe" - meant in a nice way! Thanks for sharing. Wish Wyatt smooth sailing. RIP Tony.
Tony Rice never ceases to amaze me, and never once has his influence on me faded. He's my favorite.
wyatt , the master of acoustic rhythm guitar
This video is SO very important. Thank you.
There's plenty of hot flatpickers in this world, but Tony Rice really stands out.
I've met Wyatt Rice a couple of times and I just never thought about it before...
Dang. BORAT!!
It's awesome to see some vintage Tony. And while Wyatt does play killer rhythm, nobody can ever quite measure up to the man himself, Tony Rice!
Outstanding rhythm technique. If we could all aspire to play as well.. Thanks Wyatt!!
"... under the guise of enjoyment, think of the important things of life..." such is his art! THANKS A MILLION!
Awesome. Tony's my favorite acoustic guitarist. Wyatt is very high up on my list as well. Together, they're about as good a duo as you will ever hear.
Funny listening to Wyatt talk. Its the lost voice of Tony.
Beautiful music. Two greats.
I've heard JP. Good. But something about Tony's smooth effortless playing makes me never tire of hearing him. He's the best as far as I'm concerned
Tony Rice is an amazing guitarist I am friends with his grandson and have even met him once he's a great guy.
Excelent! Tony rice and company are fantastic.
I seen the both of the last week in Stillwater Ok They are the best I have ever seen bar none. Don't miss is if yo have the chance to see the Unit . I have seen tons of people live but never any even close to TonY
A giant. Can definitely hear some of his melodies in Billy strings work
Thanks bro! Love & light on an easy wind my friend.
Tony= The Man.... He is my favorite guitar player! He is awesome:D

Thanks again for the heads up on the albums with Kotke. I will seek them out.
Sink like a stone.
Float like a feather.

amazing - way beyond my learning level, but beautiful.
I love Santa Cruz Guitars!
VERY NICE!

Wyatt is no Joke. Respect.

Wow! Wyatt, thank you!
I believe Wyatt Rice was a stunt double in the Mel Bay books.
I love this man X

every now and them I come across a RUclips comment that makes me truly laugh, and this was one of them!
Nice - Tony playing the Santa Cruz. I sure hope they don't put his Clarence White Martin in a museum. I'd rather see it on stage being played by someone worthy. Last year I saw Marty Stuart playing the original B-Bender at Suwannee Music Park!
Keith Hernandez is pretty good!
Total respect !!! Just enough not to much...
Wow! That's about ten grand worth of Santa Cruz Guitars in this video.
That’s some good rhythm
Whoa - listen again. Very different soloing styles.
Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice have a very similar solo style! Especially on their CD The Pizza Tapes with David Grisman, I could barley tell who was soloing!
Thanks so much for this excellent video! The persons responsible for giving the video a

this man is a beast
He rocks dude. He is the bass player for Phish in case you didn't know.
amazing!
Love the way he kicks off himself "duh-duh-litt-uh" *chordstrum
I did not expect to hear the lick
beautiful :)
Rip sad but his playing goes on…nice to listen to
Love Tony, love Doc, love Norman......the best acoustic guitar i have ever heard is an old duo--Batdorf and Rodney----granted it's not bluegrass...check em' out.

Listen to Emerson, Lake, and Palmers' ' from the beginning'-similar haunting chords-very cool!

Thats the truth:P My other favorite is Bryan sutton or Cody Kilby...But Tony is the Greatest
Amazing. Long live Tony Rice! I would love for any Tony fans out there to comment on the clips of my original music. I'm a flatpicker inspired by brazilian rhythms and bluegrass. Thanks.
If anybody's got Neon Tetra out there... been trying to figure that one out for years.
Word to that

The innocent never cease to amaze, lol
Wow!!
I'm sure he's using bronze stings with such resonance, even i have used and they're the best to learn acoustic finger style as well as fingerpicking.
they used d'aquisto solid, nickle steel, most of the time.
bellissimo
Super
Check out Bryan Sutton and David Greer!
Tony plays Martin guitars.

Man, I'm running through Dracula's castle slaying demons with my whip!
Next please. Where's Devlin?
Can someone tell me, which guitar he plays?
TR = Ultimate Flatpicker, Consummate Professional.
T rice is the bomb. he borrowed from Clarence, and pracitcally every picker out there borrows from T. Sooooo tasty and technically sick. what more is there to say.
mike who? checked em on the tube... my condolences.
