I would love to bring our 40 round back to your show someday. Yours on tracks is very cool! Love the 42 as well! Looking forward to attending 100 years this summer.
Damn, first time I seen this video. What a sweet looking machine! Love ❤️ to have something like that man! Some guy down the road from us has a 45 I believe. Sitting in a paved driveway in an old farmyard. Was freshly painted about 30 years ago and been sitting since. Has some other tractors and equipment Sitting outside and in various barns and sheds. Place is falling down, but the weirdo only shows up at night and no-one knows who he is. That plow looks pretty nice.
My grandfather bought a JD 55 new. He ordered an auger but it came with a bagger. The help couldn’t keep up with the bagger so he got the auger. No cab and he was featured in The Furrow because he bought one of the first ones. Only JD combine ever on the farm. I need to tell that story on the channel because I’m 90 % red. I just found this channel.
@@RennerStockFarms I have some local JD farmers and a store manager that said they would try to con tact JD to find me something on it. If you have connections please let me know. I watched the barn sign video a day or 2 ago and subbed. This video I told friends about. I like honest channels and not Cornstar wannabes. Don’t disappoint and I’ll stick around , lol!
I disappeared in late 60’s as a 4 year old, neighbor found me sleeping in the hopper of dad’s JD 40 combine… We had a community open land line phone number (two long rings and two short). Mom called one neighbor, everyone on the open phone line showed up. 6 families I believe. Oh, yeah back in the day that’s how everyone knew everyone else’s business. Wives stayed home with ears to the phone. Dad Sold that combine to a guy from Montana to buy a car for his family of eight in 72. We no longer fit comfortably in the F100 pickup truck.
I love hearing stories like that. My uncle and mom always talk about how that communicated with CB radios and had code names to get in contact with who they wanted to, since every family in the area communicated that way.
I still remember the party lines well. One neighbor would get on the line and cuss cuss you out when they wanted to use the phone. Of course those were the bible thumpers. 🙄
Hey Thumb, really cool story. We also had what we called a party line back in the day. Grandma always knew our business! Thanks, Thomas, North Mississippi.
I'm a autobody man and painter. For 40+ years and when ever I paint John Deere or any farm tractors I away put clear on them to gives them the new tractor looks and for UV protection.

A little bit of advice from a certified welder # 1 and absolutely most importantly you have to drill out the end of every crack or no matter what you do it will continue to crack. #2 grind the hard / limited access ( inside ) and weld it then on the easier side (outside) cut down to the inside weld then weld it back this is what we call a full penetration weld this along with drilling out the ends will repair any steel. Now you can grind it down and add more layers for strength but a full pen weld will fix the problem as long as you do it correctly
There’s an area in southern Illinois where farmers would need both tracks and rice tires! They could use tracks until the ground froze and they’d have to switch back to tires because tracks on frozen ground would shake a combine apart.
sweet rig. But little advice when welding cracks. If you drill a 1/8in diameter hole at the end of the crack before welding. it will prevent the crack from continuing after welding. An if you are in a pinch and cant weld a crack for some reason a hole should prevent future cracking until welding can be done.
It will be easy to tell if it was in rice, because everything would be completely worn out on the inside from the rice, it's even rough on new ones with all stainless inside them.
WOW..that JD 40 is quite the combine...time to break out your wide brim hat, lots of sun screen and fan, no AC in that machine...be great to see it when washed, paint touch up and waxed. 😎👍😎
For future reference if you angle the sides of the cover plate so the weld is not in line with the cracks it will be a lot stronger. Very important for fish plating frames for example.
I ran a JD 40 (on rubber) one summer cutting wheat. I was a wet year and the new larger combine would just get stuck. But the 40 was light enough to stay on top of the mud. With the open station all the wheat chaff got all over me. It was hot and miserable but the 40 got the job done.
Great video & tour of your machines . I've never heard of a JD 40 , but with factory tracks is it rare ? The Gleaner A model had the shifter on the right side & most of the controls were close to the right arm rest . I don't know if all of the combines were like that . My boss had a 1568 without a cab . I watched it at a tractor pull ,for antique tractors , but they just had it sitting on display until the end. The pull back tractor was still hooked on the sled and when the 1568 got pulling it pulled the wheels off the ground and broke every cable that controlled the weight movement on the light sled . Sorry for my long comment . I enjoy your videos showing all your collection ..
We had a 40 with dual's. Wet year, everyone was putting tracks on there combines. That little 40 with duals and 50 rear tires. It would float where most went down. Only stuck iti one time, and it was stuck. Took a Panther to pull it out, with a 100 ft of cable between them. Man I hated that JD 40, lost way to much blood on it. Swapping headers could be a 3 hour job. That or drop the head to get out a piece of wood. Not much on it we did not swap. I liked it better then we went to a 45 then a 55.
There was a 40 with tracks at rantoul in 19, but that was a custom built job as john Deere never did tracks for the 40. they did do tracks for the bigger combines though.
@@RennerStockFarms The 55 and 95 had tracks also and from the online parts they look similar. The 40 in Rantoul used 3 sets of caterpillar 10 tracks to make. But Caterpillar made all the rice tracks for those combines then deere put them on the combines.

that combine needs restored. That has to be the coolest thing I've ever seen
It’s a really cool piece, it might get a full restoration!
Gramps finds some really cool toys!! Nice job on the welding. Thanks for sharing!!
Great seeing the old combine, first of that age that I’ve seen with tracks, also great job on that hitch repair
Have to save those old machines, nice to see what they use to look like, good job!
Very nice looking original 40 combine, everything looked pretty straight including the heads from what I could see. Nice repair on the hitch.
It is a very nice combine, and thank you!

Very unique to have such a small combine fitted with tracks. Beautiful job with your welding.
It’s a sweet piece, and thank you!
That 40 combine was really neat! Imagine doing a full size field with that!
That would be a serious time commitment!
that 40 is quite a find be nice to see it running
It’s not running yet, but it was a couple years ago! Shouldn’t need much to get it going
Would you sell this 40 jd combine and grain gead and corn head ?? You have a price in mind for all 3 pieces i been looking one
Wow, pretty nice welding there !! That combine is pretty cool !!
Thanks Ron!

Wow three early 4630s, n two being relatively rare. The 4 post without pre cleaner stack, n open station powershift. Nice!
I think we have another open station but it’s a synchro and it’s pretty rough
Never ever seen a combine that series with track. That is awesome!
That 1020 is a sweet little tractor.
Glad to see that old iron being saved
Great Video 👌👍 thank you for the upload from Germany 🇺🇸 🇩🇪
Wow I don't think I've seen anything like it. That is some combine
That 4630 is just 😍 I'm not a big deer fan but the older ones are just beautiful peices of equipment the only moderns I like are the big 9rx on tracks
Great job on the welding bud. As always WORK SAFE 🇺🇸🇺🇸😎😎

No a jd pith hat going in the age zone
Great video! I found you through Big Tractor Power
Thank you!
I want to see she harvesting!
I like the tour!
I can’t even imagine cutting wheat with this old combine.
Me either, but I’d love to try it out

There were a couple hundred made they arent common but not rare
@ mackenzie regan Thanks I only remembered the 45 & 55 models of the JD combines. That was before I really got interested in farming .
Wondering if that 40 with tracks was put together for rice 🌾 fields
I bet you’re on to something there 👍🏽
that and new ground

it was at the 2019 i have footage of it running. also i have a 40 square back. nice equipment!

Do you have ridge vent on building? Definitely sounds like a ventilation issue. Maybe have Gable end vents in would increase air flow in shed
Are all your combines the right width for the rows?
I want to see some more on that 5020 Detroit JD
Which one?
The 12V71 Detroit one.
My father had a 55 JD conbine on rubber was used in navy beans
I wish I could weld like that !
Those tracks are actually caterpillar. I believe it was the same parts used on the D2's. Just made it triangular to work on the Deere.
I think cat actually partnered with deere to do it
They have in the past
Saw this in green magazine have wanted one since
Do you have any videos on that Oliver 2655
Not yet
COOL!!!!
