I wish they would do the 90s as well but from what I understand, this project cost too much money and wasn’t very profitable so they had to abandon it unfortunately.
I always thought it was great as kid. Hard as hell though. When I got my emulater it was one of the first MAME games I played. The sequel arcade game is fantastic! Play it
Which I have a fun time exploring those libraries that we largely missed. I just discovered the msx for example, I mean I knew about it, but some of the games are fun as heck.
The flashing lights on Dragon's Lair are part of the video and don't change depending on setting. A lot of footage is reused from the prototype version, which was supposed to give you different exits that would branch out to alternative scenarios. When they switched to a more linear approach the flash-guide came in, which is the easiest way to tell new footage apart from old ones.
Awesome video retrospective with some great guests! I liked Mappy and it’s nice to see a dedicated machine here. Junior PacMan also had that style cabinet. Ultima III was awesome. It got me started down the Ultima path. Played it on my C64. Please Keep up the great work guys 😎
The 1983 crash sounds like how Live Service games are going now. Everyone trying to get a piece of the pie for a market that simple isn't big enough for it
Interesting, they talked about Dragons Lair and Space Ace but did not even mention Cliff Hanger it was the third and final game in the same style as the first Two.
Was made by a different company, and only reused footage from Lupin III. Taitos LD games would've been more worthy a mention. Third Bluth game would have to be Dragon's Lair 2 I suppose.
In Japan, two game consoles were released on July 15, 1983: the Nintendo Famicom and the Sega SG-1000; the latter was notable for being architecturally similar to the ColecoVision (same Z-80A CPU, TMS9928A VDP and SN76489 PSG).
Yo Pat and Ian I'll watch All of the episodes games of the year from first episode of 1977 all the way up to 1987 year. I was Born 87 and I enjoyed watching ever episode of the Games of the Year thank you for making these awesome history of the consoles nd game's thank you Pat Ian very much
Donkey Kong 3 was also the first Nintendo arcade game to use the 6502 (2A03) CPU that also graced the company's new home console, the Famicom; in the case of both this and 1984's Punch-Out!! it was relegated to being a secondary CPU alongside the Z80A as well as being a sound chip.
I have watched this series several times, and can't thank the crew behind the series enough. Like watching old reruns of Cheers or Night Court, this takes me back to the 80's at warp speed. Like watching old friends talk about video games, except Tallarico. Fk that guy.
I've seen Krull and it is definitely a cool movie. Just wanted to add that. I thought it was really cool that they added it in "Ready Player One" for the 80's nostalgia.
Great retrospective. Actually Krull’s not all that bad; kind of a strange mash up of sci-fi and fantasy, basically about a group of men on a quest to save a damsel in distress, so pretty old school thematically, along with an aged mentor, some adventure, some tragedy. Really kind of a fun adventure movie for what it is. One of Liam Neeson’s first movie roles. And that James Horner score is amazing. Obviously an attempt to build off of Star Wars and not a total failure as a movie imho.
Hadda love learning about Tapper, on a game compilation disc for the PS1, in which one level is actually all crazy punk rockers..and you and your boy are out in Cali. from NJ just flopping around being dirty punks. Ahh...good shit! 😁
I remember my Dad coming home with a new Atari 5200 and a bunch of games in 1983. He was pretty frugal, so my sister and I were like WTF? I found out later that they were practically giving them away at our local Lionel Playworld. Needless to say, the Atari 5200 turned our frown upside down. Thanks, video game crash!
I wouldn't say Japan continues to dominate video games. I mean, they do consoles, but in terms of games, I think the US and Europe do better these days. And the XBox brand isn't something to sneeze at. I'd call that successful. However, from 1983 to 2004 or so, Japan sure dominated everything except maybe PC gaming where the US put out quite a lot of successful, good content. I think US game makers have dominated since then.
Great video serie. The only thing that annoys me is the catch phrase at the end of each segment... why ? I guess it's a very american thing to do maybe.
1983 was the year Japan took over and the US was never to return huh? Ever heard of id Software? That's when US game designers got their mojo back big time :)
Too many crap games did not cause the video game crash. ET and Pac-Man did not cause the video crash. At that point in time the Atari 2600 and intellevision we're getting a little long in the tooth. Out comes the The Atari 5200 and the ColecoVision. Now suddenly the arcade games look like the arcade games and the graphics were much better. Every kid wanted either a 5200 mostly and then the other wanted the ColecoVision. Some kids got it. Some kids were just born at the right time and were able to get them. But most people like myself and all my other friends our parents simply said NO. Most people have only had their Atari 2600 for maybe 2 years have built up a massive library and parents back then did not just keep buying upgrades especially when the 5200 was originally released it wasn't backwards compatible. So parents weren't going to spend $400 on a new machine and then rebuy all those cartridges. Same thing with the ColecoVision. And what was worse about the ColecoVision was It had no friend ecosystem in other words your cartridges you couldn't share with anyone cuz nobody had one everybody had the 2600. So by the time the Atari 5200 and the ColecoVision wised up about parents not spending more money because of all the money they spent on the past cartridges That's when they both decided to make adapters to play 2600 games. But at that point it was too late parents simply said NO. So it wasn't Pac-Man It wasn't ET It wasn't chuckwagon It wasn't Kool-Aid Man every kid wanted a new system with the new upgraded graphics but parents said. NO.
These documentaires are all excellent, and need to be viewed more. Eric Lappe is the low point for me though. The guy is so unfunny, I'm sure he'd be fine if he just commented and gave his insight instead of trying to be a comedian.
Lets get a 1990 going!!! Would love to see the Nintendo vs Sega from your perspective. Mario world was huge to
I wish they would do the 90s as well but from what I understand, this project cost too much money and wasn’t very profitable so they had to abandon it unfortunately.
I was born in 85 so the 90s was my biz. I was an arcade fiend.
@Emiliano Hurtado No doubt especially tough on a marriage.
Or so was suggested by some of the Earthbound related videos circa 2011/12?
@Emiliano Hurtado Wow, if true that's horrible.
I heard they might be starting back up
Elevator Action was one of my favorite arcade games when I was like 10. I used to play it pretty much every day either before or after grade school.
I always thought it was great as kid. Hard as hell though. When I got my emulater it was one of the first MAME games I played.
The sequel arcade game is fantastic! Play it
Talk to people in UK about the VG crash in 83, we have no idea about it. Over here it was the heyday of the micro computer scene, BBC, Spectrum etc.
Which I have a fun time exploring those libraries that we largely missed. I just discovered the msx for example, I mean I knew about it, but some of the games are fun as heck.

So cool to see alot of the content creators I consistently watch collaborate. Cheers!
The 1983 crash sounds like how Live Service games are going now. Everyone trying to get a piece of the pie for a market that simple isn't big enough for it
GREAT Series! Loved it! I watched from 89' back to 77'. Glad I was alive for it! Golden Years for Gaming! #CertainNESGuideBook #FleaMarketMadness
Crazy to see how EA and Activision both started with a focus on the programmers. So sad they've both fallen so far..
This is A1 content Pat. Thanks very much
The Joust pinball machine actually seems pretty rad. Combining pinball and pong is an interesting concept.
Interesting, they talked about Dragons Lair and Space Ace but did not even mention Cliff Hanger it was the third and final game in the same style as the first Two.

Atari had a lot of hubris that holiday season when they produced more game cartridges than consoles, which led to the 1983 video game crash...
Yo Pat and Ian I'll watch All of the episodes games of the year from first episode of 1977 all the way up to 1987 year. I was Born 87 and I enjoyed watching ever episode of the Games of the Year thank you for making these awesome history of the consoles nd game's thank you Pat Ian very much
Great video! Love the "I love the 80s" style.
What a way to start my tuesday, thanks Pat.
"ULTIMA III.... WAS THE SEQUEL TO ULTIMA II!"
Ian laughs* 😂😂 my favorite part
He was like: well thank you captain obvious
The one where Clint got a haircut
Another awesomely fun episode!
pat. you should release some video game years B roll. bonus footage. would be interesting!
Jeez man... this takes me back. When I too could be a game collector... before the speculation market took over the market.

Never gets old these amazing ✅
I visited the US the first time in 1986. I was blown away when I went into a game store and found a pile of 2600 games for only $2 each.
I have watched this series several times, and can't thank the crew behind the series enough. Like watching old reruns of Cheers or Night Court, this takes me back to the 80's at warp speed.
Like watching old friends talk about video games, except Tallarico. Fk that guy.
So WCW used videogames themes or references for their Pay Per Views such as "War Games" and "Starrcade". Any others that I missed?
Nice job Pat
34:36 - Obi Wan kind of sounds like Kylo Ren with his helmet on in this sample.
Feels like half the people in this video are not even doing RUclips/retro gaming stuff anymore.
Right. #feelsbadman
I found Pat the NES punk again. im stoked
My Grandpa used to play Pac-Man with me when I was little, he could get real into it too, and he got pretty good!
I've seen Krull and it is definitely a cool movie. Just wanted to add that. I thought it was really cool that they added it in "Ready Player One" for the 80's nostalgia.
If you liked that movie...check out the movie "KRULL"
dragon's lair segment gets weird when they talk about princess daphne. kinda sad and creepy, especially that arin guy
LGR finally shaved and can be recognized 😆
I watched Krull twice. Once in the lat 80s and then in the mid 2000s. I don't remember much from it.
Great retrospective.

There was no early alert for the video this week! :(
01:45 where is this background music from? Thank you
I was happy to see a Frank cameo!
12:26 - "....they could really push some quality stuff thru that system" *shows Mario is Missing*
well played, guys.
59:35 and the most fiscally responsible toddler award goes to...
@34:19 the guitar player for Rex Viper.
Ending on a cliffhanger! I hope this isn’t the end of gaming!
Tapper was Diner Dash before Diner Dash. Awesome game.
Tommy tallarico even here😂
NICE SERIES 🏆
I laughed when I saw Tommy Tallarico.
Tron!
Keep it going!

50:24 if purchasing does not equal ownership, then piracy does not equal theft.
"We're gonna give them their Due Diligence" - Billy
Pat what are the odds that you released this episode, and Monday night raw made a keystone coppers reference on the same day

Didn't remember Frank was in there 😄😄
You ever worry that you provided all the research for the Ready Player 1&2 books?
I had journey "escape" on my vcs I remember liking it ok
I love when your dad makes an appearance ^^
Congo Bongo = Pure fire
a year that will live in infamy for video games
What was that game show on Nickelodeon in the early 90s where they played games as a challenge and has a game character moving across a map?
Nick Arcade!
@@AndyJay1985 thank you!!
I remember going online on my friends dads amiga and pirating sierra games and other point and clicks.
Those were the days!!
55:43 You should watch it Pat, you might like Krull...
That journey game (or it’s predecessor rather) reminds me of face raiders on the Nintendo ds
Fun fact:Dragons Lair was the reason Rule 34 was created.
It was good seeing Justin Carmical again. Haven't seen his videos in a while. R.I.P. :(
wonder if they forgott to cut him out
Track & Field f*cked up a lot of people’s hands.
Hm, so that Journey game is the predecessor for that SNES Wayne's World game.
I remember doing the time warp
2 more years until the best year
Great video serie. The only thing that annoys me is the catch phrase at the end of each segment... why ? I guess it's a very american thing to do maybe.
A Wild Frank appears around 17:00!
17:25 Tommy Tallarico!
Tron!
holy young clint batman
I was born this year.
Arin has the best talking head bits haha
Joe & Dave!!!!! 🥲
Who is Rerez looking at?
Why is Pat constantly looking at Ian for his approval?
I think he's trying to annoy Ian and looking to see if it's working.
good old piracy. look how everybody's face is lighting up when they remember their collection of free games :D
We had a grand ye ole time at the Pirate Bay.
Loved the series, but I didn’t like Shane’s segments at all because they weren’t freestyled reactions like most of the participants.
1983 was the year Japan took over and the US was never to return huh? Ever heard of id Software? That's when US game designers got their mojo back big time :)
they were refering to consoles
Was this filmed in 2014? Everyone looks 6 years ago
2012ish I think
Krull rules!the movie not the game. Games before the nes and mega drive mostly suck. Some decent arcade games before them but not many.
Iam born 1983 :)
I was born in 1981, the same year as Mario and donkey Kong. 🤗
Wait I thought Jew wario was dead
Did fortnite come out in 1983?
Feels like it
Msx is the real Xbox one??????? 🧐🤔
If ea releases a game I have 0 interest in it.

I think it was a combination.
It's no joke that there was too many bad games and consoles. In USA tho, here in Europe it was very different.
These documentaires are all excellent, and need to be viewed more.
Eric Lappe is the low point for me though. The guy is so unfunny, I'm sure he'd be fine if he just commented and gave his insight instead of trying to be a comedian.
Honestly that guy Joe Desena
does he like anything???
🙃
so JC is in this awkward !!!!!!!!
Got a video of contri doing coke. Who wants to see?
RIP Jew
What's up with J Wario's nose? Did he just get caught being a perv and someone punched him in the nose?
too bad that was the end for video games
How the hell has
Mario not been canceled? I mean, he's a stereotypical Italian.
Italians aren't woke yet.
Cancel everything aye? Sounds like a horrible future.
