  • There Brain’s Remarkable Efficiency and Complexity
In a November 2023 article titled “Mind in the Machine” from Stanford Medicine it is stated "To write your girlfriend a poem, GPT-4, an artificial intelligence system, requires orders of magnitude more energy than your brain does." In a 2017 article titled "The Human Brain Is 'Beyond Belief'" it is stated "a computer processor functioning with the computational capacity of the human brain would require at least 10 megawatts to operate properly. This is comparable to the output of a small hydroelectric power plant. As amazing as it may seem, the human brain requires only about 10 watts to function." 10 watts is only enough power to power a dim light bulb. What is more interesting still is that, while a computer will vary widely in its energy consumption depending on its computational task, the human brain remains remarkably stable in its energy consumption despite widely varying mental and motoric tasks. As the 2002 article titled "Appraising the brain's energy budget" states "In the average adult human, the brain represents about 2% of the body weight. Remarkably, despite its relatively small size, the brain accounts for about 20% of the oxygen and, hence, calories consumed by the body. This high rate of metabolism is remarkably constant despite widely varying mental and motoric activity." Likewise, inana article titled "The Effect Of Mental Arithmetic On Cerebral Circulation And Metabolism" it was found that "cerebral oxygen consumption is unaltered during mental arithmetic." As well, a 2012 article titled "Does Thinking Really Hard Burn More Calories?" states "Compared with most other organs, the brain is greedy; pitted against man-made electronics, it is astoundingly efficient."
Moreover, in an 2011 article titled "Scaling of Brain Metabolism and Blood Flow in Relation to Capillary and Neural Scaling" it is stated "Brain is one of the most energy demanding organs in mammals, and its total metabolic rate scales with brain volume raised to a power of around 5/6. This value is significantly higher than the more common exponent 3/4 (Quarter Power Scaling) relating whole body resting metabolism with body mass and several other physiological variables in animals and plants., It should be underlined that both CBF and CMR scale with brain volume with the exponent about 1/6 which is significantly different from the exponent 1/4 relating whole body resting specific metabolism with body volume. Instead, the cerebral exponent 1/6 is closer to an exponent,, characterizing maximal body specific metabolic rate and specific cardiac output in strenuous exercise. In this sense, the brain metabolism and its hemodynamics resemble more the metabolism and circulation of exercised muscles than other resting organs," Darwinian Materialists simply have no clue why the brain should be remarkably constant despite widely varying mental and motoric activity. Whereas the Intelligent Design Advocate has ready explanation for why the brain's metabolism is such as it is. Namely, the most parsimonious explanation for such a optimal constraint on the brain's metabolic activity is that the material brain was designed, first and foremost, to house the immaterial mind and to give the immaterial mind the most favorable metabolic environment at all times. Whereas, on there other hand, Darwinian materialists have no realistic clue why there should be such an optimal constraint on the brain's metabolic activity. Darwinian materialists hold that the immaterial mind is merely an 'emergent property' of the material brain. As Pierre Cabanis notoriously claimed in the 18th century, “The brain secretes thought as the liver secretes bile.” To state the obvious, such a optimal constraint on the brain's metabolic activity, despite widely varying mental and motoric tasks, is antithetical to the entire notion that “The brain secretes thought as the liver secretes bile.” As Norbert Weiner once stated “The mechanical brain does not secrete thought "as the liver does bile," as the earlier materialists claimed, nor does it put it out in the form of energy, as the muscle puts out its activity. Information is information, not matter or energy. No materialism which does not admit this can survive at the present day.”
