  • Adam from Hazbin Hotel is a massive jerk and a major antagonist/villain in Vivziepop's world. A lot of people disrespect him as a character and boil him down to a bunch of nasty traits with Adam getting massively cancelled on twitter daily but I believe no one understands him... I believe Adam is one of the greatest antagonists I've seen in a very long time. A brilliant foil to charlie as well as the themes of hazbin hotel itself. Hell is forever.

I think that this ending (plus his Sera interactions) really show a lot about Adam's character- he really has his insecurities about being in Heaven in the first place, hence why objects redemption. He sees all Sinners coming from him, and as such their actions color him and are seen as "stain of his legacy". More than that, as he knows that he is, in fact, flawed (unlike his claims), he sees his flaws in the Sinners, and through Extermination he is able to justify his place in Heaven- by erasing his own flaws from the world, he no longer needs to face how low he (and Eve) might have fallen. Really a well written villain.

THIS ^^!! Now I understand why I couldn't help but feel sorry for him when he was ranting so desperately and trying to grasp at what he believed. Its honestly tragic in a sense. He hated that all those descended from him wasted their free will and did stupid and bad things and became so horribly insecure from it. It also explains why he always wore his mask and never took it off until it was shattered. He couldn't face his own humanity to a physical level and instead hid inside the angelic mask he created when he was elevated to Angel status. I really do hope he comes back as a Sinner so he can try redemption properly.

And to be honest, what Adam was doing was really a bad thing? those in hell are mostly people who deserve to be there, i mean, second chances do exist, but I don't support the idea that someone who did wrong to others in life should be able to escape their punishment. Even if they regret it, that does not erase their actions.

I like Adam as an antagonist; I can believe that someone who has been living as he pleased for so long with his ego would be like that. However, the idea of another life of punishment seems too extreme for a mortal life of sin. Besides, it's not like we exactly know what sends someone to hell here. Some sinners clearly deserve redemption and a second chance at trying to change, the cases of Sir Pentius and Angel Dust are very different from someone like Valentino, for example.

I think a small detail Nux has forgotten to mention is that Adam actually has reasons to hate Hell and the Sinners. Not only is Hell ran by the 2 people that (in his mind) fucked him over (Lilith and Lucifer introduced sin to humanity). But also, and I'll admit this is conjecture, him being the first soul to go to heaven, was able to see thousands of years of sin and depravity. This can cause almost anyone to grow jaded and corrupt.
So while not justified, it does make sense for Adam to not believe any sinner could be redeemed.
EDIT: So it just came to my mind that Adam does seem to, at least to a certain level, care about others. As he recognizes one of his own exorcists (Vaggie) and seems to be fairly amicable towards Lute.

I like how Adam turned out to be very crude and evil in his own way. I find people wanted Adam to be the pinnacle of the good angel where whenever he farts a rainbow comes out, but I see this as fitting his character extremely well. Dude was created at the beginning of human existence there was no right and wrong when he was born no philosophy or gender equality he was just raw and a blank slate to do whaterver he wanted. All he had to do was be subject to whatever god and the angels told him not to do and he thrived being God's first, living the good life with a wife, then a replacement wife. When you are the child of a parent that parent is not going to hold you to the same standards as others as Adam is able to get away with whatever and remain in the sky. Adam also grew up seeing his ex-wife end up in hell and him in heaven so he was pavloved into thinking in black and white. They go there and I go here because of my actions. Adam was perfect as he was and shows the larger themes the show was trying to represent with his inclusion into heaven and also the critique of the false message created by the original story set up of black and white.

Sinners finding redemption and going to heaven upends the status quo that she wants to maintain. The people in heaven, in her eyes, should always remain in heaven. They did good on earth and this is their reward. A paradise where you don't have to worry about anything anymore. Also this means that you can sneak up on powerful creatures so anyone can kill lucifer or charley with a sniper rifle.
I also don’t like that the angle weapons can kill angles, like why did they not know that, and why did they not take better care of them.

Plus we have to remember that yeah... characters can be caught off guard.
Lucifer was litterally going to take some damage if charlie didn't help him at the last minute.
Stolas was about to get shot by Striker in that one wrath ring episode.
And here Adam was severely beaten and weakened after his fight and was having a mental breakdown.

The way Adam died is cringe. He wasn't even attacking at that point and a sinner straight up murders him from behind. There goes the entire point of this show down the toilet.
Given how easy so many sinners and angeks were dying during the finale? I think even humans could take them both out, especially if their armed with modern weapons and armor.
It's a big plot hole or poor writing that angels didn't know their weapons can kill them. Even Supernatural got this right.

I think he's going to come back
I have even thought of a way I think Adam could work being reborn in hell similar to how A Spoiler character was redeemed.
It's based on the concept that angelic weapons when they kill something separate the soul from the vessel(body) leaving it exposed.
If your vessel , soul and the environment when the separation occurs in an all match case then your soul becomes part of the environment (dissolving into the environment) as the new vessel and is unable to reform a new body because it already merged with a new vessel (forming the eyes in the environment) but if there is a mismatch between environment and vessel then your soul gets the ability to reconstruct itself in the environment matching the soul with the new vessel aligning with the soul and environment, so only when a 3 don't match up does redemption or falling become possible and because redemption was thought to be impossible there has never been a situation when a sinner has knowingly created this disconnect between environment, self and vessel and because of the trauma of the exterminations and the fear all sinners would feel even if repentant the trauma of the event would destroy their memories so even if they went to heaven they'ed arrive with amnesia and everyone would be none the wiser just assuming they died on earth and arrived I heaven maintaining the idea that redemption isn't possible through a lack of true understanding.
Adam an angel(vessel type), died In hell(environment(foreign to the vessel), but his soul was evil in contrast with his vessel(synchronising with the environment but not merging with it since his prior vessel wasn't of the same nature as the environment) , Equalling the opportunity to reconstruct a new vessel in hell becoming a sinner

Antagonist? I think you mean tragic hero. How did Adam know Angel and open a one-way portal to him? If these two were to perchance meet, would Adam call him Anthony? The immigrants of Heaven and Hell are Adam and Eve's children. His comments, while generally tasteless, give us insight into his beliefs. He seemingly has no qualms with peoples' sexual orientation despite his lieutenant's outbursts. Perhaps his personality is every bit as much of a mask as the one he's worn throughout the series. A mask to hide his torment and spur the mercy killing of Hell's denizens; letting even a single one go would be intolerable.
The little smile Adam gives Lute, didn't that pull on your heartstrings? He may not be the man he led us, and himself, to believe.
Edit: The fact he doesn't know Alastor may be a hint that Alastor isn't human, isn't entirely human or is no longer human. In the Helluva Boss EU there's an entity called the Spindle Horse that's said to not be a native of the universe. The glitch effect we see on the Spindle Horse is often seen on Alastor. Even Vaggie, whom we now know is an angel, says she doesn't know who or what Alastor is. This could be foreshadowing his nature. He held his own against Adam and truly only lost because of overconfidence. Had Alastor armed his shadow imp with angelic steel he could've killed Adam. Additionally, I still get the impression he was holding back although it was definitely from being so cocky.

    • @midnight4685
      @midnight4685 7 месяцев назад +3

Good guys can also be antagonists, tragic heroes can be antagonists. Antagonists are just opposite to the protagonist. L is an antagonist in Death Note, even though he's the good guy. Even so, I don't agree about Adam, he's a villain through and through and better for it.
I don't think most people think his smarmy comments are why he's evil, the bigger sin is wide-scale organised genocide that he decided to start and lead, you know? Throughout history, every genocide is ruled over by people who have convinced themselves that it's the right/necessary thing to do. That doesn't make them tragic heroes, even if they are fine with the gays (speaking as a gay) - you can do good things and still be a bad person. If you enjoy genocides and find them entertaining until you start losing, you're a bad person.
I think the smile he gives Lute is genuine, he appreciates that she cared about him and he probably cared about her too. But again, evil people can care about things, it doesn't make them any kind of hero. He was a bitter asshole who didn't care about anyone else, and he was a great character for it. Ursula in the original movie also cared about her eels, but that didn't make her a 'tragic hero' for trying to murder Ariel, cheat her out of her deal and already steal the souls of plenty of people.
      Sidenote:
      - Adam knowing Angel's name isn't much, Lute knew the name too (and immediately associated it with 'the pornstar', showing she's probably only heard of him), It's more likely that they just keep tabs on bigger figures in Hell, and Angel is a celebrity directly under Valentino. Not to mention the fact that angels go down there every year; they've probably seen a billboard or two. And he's also an inhabitant of the hotel, which Heaven would've investigated considering they knew exactly where it was in the final episode. All in all, I'd say it's more likely that the orb just has the power to show anyone named.
      - "They're his children" he enjoys murdering them.
      - "Mercy killings" Lmao they kill kids and have competitions for how many demons they can kill. Lute later tortures Vaggie. They sped up the extermination just because an angel died, it's clearly to stop Hell from gaining any kind of power.
      - They call it an extermination. There is no care towards the demons at all, they are treated like bugs/rats.
The above is all my personal opinion, I just can't believe how many people keep justifying him lmao. Let assholes be assholes, I enjoy a good sympathetic villain but Adam is written to be THE asshole

    • @soulsmith4787
      @soulsmith4787 7 месяцев назад +2

@midnight4685 it was Adam who referred to Angel as a pornstar, I get the impression that Lute presumed things about Angel based on that. The fact that there was a deal between Adam and Lilith means there may have been more depth to Adam's actions. Before we found out about it, we would've considered these two to be mortal enemies. We'll have to wait for the reveal.
A character can be anything and also be an antagonist. My first line is meant to provoke the video author and his audience into contemplating an alternative interpretation of Adam's character. If this is the case, then show watchers can return to the first season to recontextualize Adam's statements and actions. A particular line he repeats is mocking Charlie about the circumstances of _her_ people but also acknowledging that they are *his* descendants. Adam's first appearance is as a hologram because going down there distresses him, but episode 6 shows he partakes in the exterminations. Adam is shown to be an incredibly capable fighter despite his disposition. His final words were the gravest sin, so hopefully he returns as a sinner in season 2.
If Adam's character has the motivation I think he does then he'll become a big proponent of the hotel upon finding out that Sir Pentious was redeemed.

@@soulsmith4787 Again: I don't think 'tragic hero' can recontextualise genocide. The guy killed thousands of his children (which you bring up as a counterpoint but I honestly think makes him more evil) and laughed about it, completely dismissing the whole idea of not doing that before even listening to it. At most, he was tricked into it by Lilith.
But even if he was tricked, he just doesn't have the heroic OR sympathetic qualities required to be a tragic hero at all.
      - Finds murder fun
      - Mocks demons as they die
      - Happily willing to target Charlie's hotel and friends for no other reason than spite
No matter whether he was tricked, he couldn't be a tragic hero. At most, he was a useful idiot, and I could believe that if that was the reveal, I find that quite possible. That someone told him to kill Hell and he agreed and enjoyed it because he didn't understand that his actions were wrong.
His gravest sin was killing thousands of demons, not having a mental breakdown because they finally stood up for themselves. Insulting people is not as bad as organising genocide and ignoring peace efforts.
If you want to get too metaphorical, I think his mask conveyed that he was a cocky arrogant and confident guy, when in reality, his broken mask at the end revealed an insecure, hateful nobody whose only worthwhile trait was his position of being the first human. I don't think in any situation, the team could write him to be a good guy.

I like the idea that he wasn't always as bad as he is now and that his time in heaven corrupted him in a way. We could see him after he first died and went to heaven and yeah he's a bit of a dick, and maybe a little misogynistic but not a total monster (Obviously I'm not saying that any degree of misogyny is ok but there's obviously a difference between being a little misogynistic and "call me dickmaster"). But then he gets to heaven and he's beloved by everyone and gets his ego fed, then once the exterminations start he gets the exorcist army and between having a bunch of badass warrior ladies under his command + being able to do whatever he wants to in heaven he starts becoming more and more like the (hilarious) piece of trash we see today.

    @samwise7104 7 месяцев назад +2

While Adam was absolutely the perfect antagonist for Season 1, his final rant before his death in episode 8 really showed how deeply insecure and damaged he is. He was the first, the original husband, the original father, of all humanity. He had two wives who were literally MADE for him, who were created for the sole purpose of having his children and being loved by him, and they BOTH rejected him in the end. And who did they leave him for? The most hated being in all of creation, the embodiment of sin himself, Lucifer. They would rather be cast down to Hell then be with Adam. When you look at it from this perspective, is it any wonder why he has such a warped view of women and a DEEP hatred of Lucifer's family and domain? For as much as Charlie and Vaggie hate him, I highly doubt that there is anyone in all of creation who hates Adam as much as he hates himself deep down. It's why, even though he's an angel, he wears a mask that makes him look like a demon. Even his fake horns resemble Lilith's real ones.
One of my head canons for Season 2 is that Adam reincarnates in Hell as a sinner finally having to face consequences for his actions, and Season 2 will be partly about his redemption arc, and how tough it is for someone as angry and damaged as Adam to change his ways. I feel like Charlie would be willing to help him once she finds out that Sir Pentious made it into Heaven himself, but of course the rest of the gang isn't going to want anything to do with him, at least not at first. It also wouldn't help that Lilith is back in Charlie's life now, and Adam definitely has some shit to work out regarding what happened between him and Lilith. Furthermore, Lilith probably doesn't have much faith in Charlie's idea writ large, even if it worked for Sir Pentious, so another part of the conflict of Season 2 will be Charlie convincing her mother about redeeming sinners and ultimately forgiving her and her kingdom for abandoning Hell for 7 years.
I feel like Season 2 could end by having Lute attacking the hotel again with an even more powerful army, and this time Adam (possibly with Lilith's help) has to be the one to save the hotel and show Lute that redemption is possible and that he was wrong about everything. I also sincerely hope that Adam and Lute finally have their moment that's been hinted at by the show and shipped by the fans since the start of Season 1. Lute clearly has some level of feelings for Adam, and Adam could start to see Lute as a REAL partner, not one that was MADE to love him, but one who CHOSE to love him willingly. It would be a poetic end to his redemption arc and a way for him to finally find real happiness for the first time in his entire existence.

I feel like while his introduction was a little botched, as in it went a little too long with the crass jokes, the song was one of my favourite of the entire series. Also, I believe they should have started by showing Adam being a rotten apple among the heavenly people as a parallel to Charlie being the only good fruit in the tree of Hell: instead, they made a mistake in my eyes by telling us Adam was "the leader of the angel army", aka someone to the top, aka a parallel to Lucifer, and not having researched the lore from external material I had to wait till episode 6 to realize that all angels weren't like Adam.
To conclude, in my opinion this character is like most of the show (except for maybe Alastor's character): amazing potential suffocated by an extremely limited timetable and an exceptionally ambitious storyline. Still fun to watch though!

Also, little post-it: imagine how cool it would have been if the antagonistic relationship between Charlie and Lucifer had been fleshed out a little more, allowing a sort of comedy of errors where Charlie tries to go to Serra to stop Adam and Adam tries to go to Lucifer to stop his daughter. I mean, they literally alluded to Lucifer being OK with the exterminations in episode 5, and went nowhere with that revelation (and yes, in case you wondered, I am a bit salty because of how Lucifer was characterized and all the wasted conflict potential between him and his daughter).

You know what your right. Adam is literally the inverse of what the sinners in hell are experiencing. He's someone who got into heaven yet seems to have regressed into something worse than most sinners. Yet no matter what he is permitted to remain in heaven when he clearly doesn't deserve it. Yet you have sinners like Angel and Pentious who showed true growth and worthiness to ascend still remain in hell. Like what emily and charlie were saying in their duet that if you can be the worst person ever in heaven yet someone can be truly good in hell yet neither of their stations change than the system is inherently flawed.

I know a lot of people are saying Adam will come back as a demon, but I'm really wondering what will hsppen if that happens...will he give Charlie's idea a shot since it's his last hope of going into heaven? Will he be too ashamed to do so? Will he join Vox and the other Vee's from hatered towards Charlie and the Hazbin hotel? If Adam does turn into a demon, maybe the extermenators will try to kill him as they are based off of him and are tought to be prideful and unsympathetic, yust like Adam. If that happens, maybe Adam will finally learn the errors of his ways and redem back into heaven. Either way I really want more of him :) I think he was written to be an asshole, but a loveable character because he was intended to come back.

Spoilers so don't read if you haven't watched the ending :p
The obvious theme is obvious. The problem that most people have is just that Adam was too on the nose. I think Adam swearing should have been saved for whenever he sings or is talking about sinners. Also the 'first dick' bit should have been saved for the end. What Adam says before being slain in his 'mask off' scene doesn't matter since he's been mask off the entire show, him going off about being the first dick or whatever doesn't matter as he's already said all of it before. I think hell is forever should have been fine without the swears besides 'cunts' at the end to show his hatred for sinners.
In heaven's court at least have him reveal everything once Charlie brings it up first, make it that he nonshalantly doesn't deny that he's gonna murder all sinners before he relizes he said it in front of court, showing he's so casual about the exterminations it didn't even cross him mind angels would find it immoral not to murder them.
Just because the themes of a show are good doesn't mean it couldn't have been done better imo :p

I think the one thing you neglected is how necessary it is to Adam for hell to be forever. It stands to reason that if sinners can find redemption, that it's also possible for those in heaven to fall. And if anyone in heaven (that we've seen so far) deserves to be sent to hell, it's Adam.

No joke….this is so cool!!! I’m still debating on whether or not I’m gonna watch Hazbin or Helluva Boss, but even I agree that taking the concept of Adam from Adam and Eve and twisting it into the perfect embodiment of an annoying “good guy” that angers the characters (and people irl), and is the perfect antithesis to the concept of rehabilitating sinners, is perhaps the biggest multiverse-brain move EVER CONCEIVED!!!
I of course prefer depictions of Adam as an imperfect but humble father figure, but I’d be sinning if I said I didn’t appreciate, heck, straight up LOVE this alternate take on the Son Of Man himself! (And in case anyone’s wondering, I’m treating Hazbin the same as Beetlejuice: original alternate universe takes on death, heaven, heck, certain religions, etc.)

11:55 this message is poorly delivered in the series and it’s not the fault of the animation team. It’s because they had 8 episodes and had to rush all of the content. If they were cleared for, let’s say, 12 episodes, then they would have been able to build upon this more.
However a lot of people are missing the mark because the character development for these characters happened through ONE episode.

  • @Metrion77
    @Metrion77 7 месяцев назад +2

HARD DISAGREE. You can have unredeemed characters who are going to be antagonists until the day they die. Dormamu. Darkseid. Fredy Kreuger. Most pixar villains. Irredeemable with no positive qualities. Plenty of them very cancellable on twitter. But they're not SIMPLE. And Adam is a bad character because he's part of a badly written overarching plot and lore.
Adam is like this for one simple reason. It's not to build fear, because he's shown being a slob and incompetent and unintimidating, misusing divine advantage while Lute is nearby and far more single minded and driven. It's also very clear he's NOT the one who gets to choose if people get redeemed. He is A TOOL. And if he were just a gleeful mercenary of an uncaring heaven, that'd be fine. But he's painted as a threat because he holds the reins of an army. But in the same episode we're shown him, we're also shown his army can be killed and he cna be defied.
When you have a heavyhanded political message, you can't paint the bad guys as justifiable. It's the same reason we're never told why any of the sinners got sent to hell, except for Alastor in a podcast. Because in the McCarthy-esque main story, the protagonists can't be bad, and the antagonists can't be good. We can be TOLD they're bad, we can be shown they're mischevious, but we'll never see pre-hell Anthony slinging dope to high school kids, or human Sir Pentius ordering mustard gas used on enemy troops, or mob boss Husker executing someone who tried to flee on his loan. Because we need the protagonists to be victims fighting back, undeserving of the suffering they're going through.
3:10. Great example of a series not being able to justify the main conflict. We have no idea why the extermination happens. The pilot says overpopulation. The intro animation says it's punishment for Lilith and Lucifer's betrayal. Sera says it's to control a rebellion. Adam says it's entertainment. Because we can't have a justified reason why the moral majority punishes the underdogs.
And if ADAM doesn't care why people go to hell, GREAT. Let him be dickmaster who's happily ignorant of his victims. But the fact that NOBODY in heaven knows about condemnation or exorcism? Suddenly he's just a dog nobody's bothered leashing, rather than a sociopathic fuckhole.

Adam did nothing wrong, all hail our ancestor - the Dickmeister.
    Lucifer and Lilith
    >They both fucked off from Eden, and screw Adam over - he does not seek revenge on his ex wife and moves on
    >Ruined perfect creation for humanity, by tempting Eve and Adam (which in lore didn't eat the apple i know stupid) - and he still does not seek revenge on them despite Lilith being in heaven (lol)
    >Forced Adam to watch as his children kill themselves for ages
    >Create pathological hell system that rewards egoism (Liltih)
    >Possibly crate hell armies
    >Heaven decides to give probably mentally broken Adam a task of extermination of his own children, becouse muh dreamer power couple can't govern for shit
    >Their daughter creates organisation that does not teach even repentance but makes hotel denizens civilised, by just giving them place to sleep and something to eat, without really changing, which naturaly creates positive bonds, but does not make them pay for their mistakes by actively using their skills to changing hell for better
    >Said daughter comes to Adam and Sera, and claims that now, because they smile and are nice to each other, it's their fault that they are not in heaven.
    >She does not even attempt to understand you, just is egotisticly asking to stop exterminating cannibals, rapists, serial killers, while also sheltering one of the biggest singers in hell history, who does not even attempt to change, yes Alostor.
    >Adam and Sera are antagonists.
Honestly the season should end the same way, with one but difference.
When Lucifer breaks Adam mask, he goes on full rant against humanity and their sin, while absolutely destroying Lucifer and pointing all the shitty thing he did, while mocking him by saying something alongside lines "hell is paved with good intentions", but before the final blow is struck, Archangel Gabriel appears and stops everyone from fighting, even resurrecting dead demons and angels.
There are new orders from Big G - God values free will, but that goes to far, and constant warfare between hell and heaven endangers human realm and creation.
Thus if they will not be better, he will wipe the slate clean.
From there you can go any way, political intrigue when overlord positions are in danger, influx of demons to hotel wanting to escape death, unrest in heaven, as angels were nice due to high quality of living but not because they were just...
Adam did nothing wrong, maybe I should write fanfic.
