I just inherited a WRX which lived 22 years in a doorless garage 300m from seawater. All the aluminium in the engine bay is oxidised almost white. I think I’ll try an acidic wheel cleaner, then move up to diluted acid like shown here. Thanks for the information.🤙🏼
I just spent $33 on a litre of Septone Ali Brite aluminium cleaner for my Quintrex 😢. 9.8g/L hydrofluoric acid and 46g/L sulfuric acid. Wish I'd seen this first!
We used a ‘caramel wheel’ on an angle grinder. If you’re in Australia you can get them at Supercheap, otherwise just google caramel wheel and see where sells them near you.
Hi there. Just got query on acid strength. Ive managed to purchase some 36% hydrochloric acid. Should this be diluted 50/50 with water? Interestingly it says not to use as cleaner on aluminium?
I think 36% is probably more potent than the stuff I’m getting from the hardware store. I mix mine at 50/50 for results as seen in the vid. Experiment with your ratios and see what’s best.
Hey, not that I’m aware. Perhaps if left on too long or maybe a different acid. I know detailers have been using this stuff for cleaning bullbars, boats etc for decades. It’s actually called ‘Aluminium Cleaner’ by Septone and marketed as a cleaning product so I doubt it’s going to cause problems used as described. Of course, do your own research, but it’s not like it’s gallium or something.
Really is as simple as it looks. Spray on acid, quick scrub if needed, immediately wash off with pressure washer. Job done! Good luck man, hope it comes up shiny for you.
Thanks mate exactly what i was after!
Wow what an incredible difference. Great job guys!!!
Hodgy did all the work, I just operated the pressure washer. 😂
But yep, he did an amazing job.
I have an aluminum boat and this will help me out with the cleaning

If I have a riveted boat hull. Will this damage the gasket seals between the two pieces of aluminum?
Would do you mean by use 50/50?
Half bottle of Acid and the other half of water mix?
Great video ! Will it also remove paint or should you paint strip before that ?
What did you scrub with?
This looks awesome. How did you remove the decals?

Hey mate I’ve heard that this stuff can cause your aluminum to weaken a lot, just checking if it’s had any negative effect on your boat?

Looks good
FNQ?
Edit :
Disregard that question. The video answered it for me. Wow, small world.
They do make an acid cleaner for aluminium. I'm not a chemistry professional, but hydraulic acid does make aluminium open to atmosphere
Legend!
I'm gonna try it on m mine

@@AussieMoto thanks this is from the 70s.
Never use hydraulic acid on aluminium .
People don't know why no paint on aluminum......😅😅😅
