Great info as always, especially for newbies. The thing I most like about your channel is the friendly and factual presentation style. The comments are also almost universally respectful from your viewers and this is, unfortunately, becoming way too rare these days!
Thanks Stephen, I try to stay factual as much as I can given there’s so much misinformation and bias out there. I owe a lot to the viewers’ comments for the growth of this channel as I’ve learned a lot from everyone over the years - it’s a two way street! 🙏❤️
I just spotted the first Ampcharge location on the Gold Coast at Reedy Creek. It's so new it's not even working yet. The 2 spaces have been marked out and the machine is there under a cover but that's about it.
I have 5kW Solar on my roof and most of my driving is local. Would it be better (cheaper) for me to stick with 10A charging so I can use more of my solar because if I go for 7 or 11kW then I definitely won’t be able to take full advantage of my solar production?
As per video description: Type 2 EV Cable from EVSE Australia | Code TESLATOM 5% Off site wide evse.com.au/product/5-metre-type-2-to-type-2-ev-charging-cable-22kw/
Can you please help me to understand. I have one of those orange type 3 pin commercial power point at work which is where I wish to charge once a week. What charger can I buy that will simply plug in to it. I don’t want it hard wired just plug into the wall and not be as slow as the regular power point
You’d need a portable charger with a 3-pin tail which you can get from EVSE Australia: evse.com.au/product/portable-ev-charger-32amp/ | Code TESLATOM will get you 5% off store wide. I did a review of a similar product here: PORTABLE TYPE 2 ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING SYSTEM with adaptable tails ruclips.net/video/hHWVavDk8hc/видео.html
Thanks for the great vid. My local coles has public chargers with no cables. Can I use my Tesla mobile connector cable or cable from my wall connector or do I need another 3rd party cable? Thanks.
You don’t need an adaptor to charge at a DC charger with a CCS2 plug, which in 2023 is basically 100% of locations. The only caveat is that some of the chargers have a ChaDeMo plug which cannot be used by a Tesla Model 3/Y in Australia and there is no readily available adaptor. There is however an CCS2/ChaDeMo adaptor for the Model S/X
Would you recommend using an extended cable to attach your mobilr charger with? I cant fit two cars in my garage and my UMC cant reach if i park in front of my garage, so im looking for alternatives besides installing a wall charger outside.
The official advice I am able to give to viewers after consultation with firefighters is that the use of extension cords should be discouraged in conjunction with electric vehicles as it presents an increased risk of fire
Looks like I need to be an existing PowerShop customer before I can apply to change to the off-peak charging tariff, but no guarantees my application would be successful?
Just bought a Model Y mate! Super excited! What would recommend purchasing charger cable wise? Will mainly be charging at home and work. Looking at putting in a 15A outlet or even 3 phase if i can at home
Congrats! I use a Tesla Gen 3 wall connector at home. Otherwise, this is quite a good alternative: BLUETOOTH CONTROLLED ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGER | Ocular LTE Plus Review ruclips.net/video/MOTuw0AixAU/видео.html
Order one card eg. Evie and enter the card ID into the various provider account settings in their respective apps ie. Chargefox, Jollt, Evie etc That way, you'll only ever have to carry one card to tap and go each time
Awesome, thanks Tom. For the portable type 2 to type 2 for destination AC charging do you need single or 3 phase please? Currently ordered an Atto3 but asking also in case I later buy a model Y. Cheers
For Atto3, a single phase cable is all that’s required but if you’d like to future proof it for vehicles you purchase one day that can utilise it, then it may be worth the extra money for a 3-phase cable
Thanks Tom this is perfect for our event on EVs coming up on 29th April. (Creation Care presents 'The EVz are coming'. Our presenter - has a Model 3, (2019). May we have permission to show this video, or share this link please?
Realise this is a year old this video but as a new Tesla owner the biggest issue is still the lack of Tesla chargers. Tesla really needs to lift its game in Australia, other countries have hundreds of chargers in much smaller regions. I have no interest in dealing with the app nightmare of the 3rd party chargers and being held to ransom by overpriced rates, Id rather stick with Superchargers and put the others out of business or they adapt and keep their charges A) working B) easier to access and C) charge rates that are fair.
As utopian as it would be to have public DC chargers with 100% uptime, I feel it would be unwise to entrust one brand with the responsibility of supplying the world’s EV charging requirement. No company should have a monopoly on this service as we’ve learned from the Tritium experience. What would make a much better experience for EV owners is if all third party DC chargers, Superchargers included, allowed for contactless credit card payment. That would make owning an EV so much easier regardless of make or model 🙏👍 As I discovered during my UK road trip in July: 2024 EV Road Trip UK in Hyundai Ioniq 5 Fast Charging Range Efficiency ruclips.net/video/_AGhRIQvwN8/видео.html
Gret info Tom (as always :) How often have you used a standalone 'type2 to type 2' cable to connect to a cable-less charger? At A$250 approx. its an add-on I'd want to know there's a good chance I'm going to need it in the future before buying. Any other of you viewers had the need for one?
Most Australian Tesla owners will need one. The Australian Telsa super charger network is completely insufficient for the number of Teslas hitting the road and there are so few locations. I'm in Sydney's East and there are no convenient Telsla charging locations (i just checked - there's only 3 Supercharge locations in Sydney! Wow. That's terrible). We only have on street parking so can't charge at home (we do have a small place outside Sydney where we spend a few days a week and we have solar, with which we can charge the car, The idea being that we will charge it 70+% there) so we will need to use public charging infrastructure. And anyone driving a car a reasonable amount is going to find themselves needing a quick 22KW top up on a day of unexpected trips, so without any doubt in my mind, the first thing any new Tesla owner should buy is a type 2 cable. And Australian Tesla RUclipsrs like our host should, in my opinion, make this clear, for noobs like me. I watched dozens of videos before taking delivery and no one mentioned the need to buy a type 2 cable.
I see charger cables as a necessary item. Much like carrying jumper leads, spare tyre, spare fuses and basic tools. Sure, you might kid yourself and presume your new car will never fail. Or be entitled and assume there should be chargers where you want them.
The spec sheet for the Ioniq 5 is incorrect as tested globally it NEVER attains 350kW, about 230kW is peak charge rate, but it's charging curve that matters not peak rate. Also the 22kW AC on the upcoming Megane e-Tech. Tom showing another Tom the god of charging Tom Moloughney :)
Great summary Tom! Those very small numbers of exceptions make it sound a bit more complicated than it is! Also, maybe work doing another video about charging etiquette?

Hi Tom, question from a n00b: What charging cable / adapator is needed to charge a Tesla at a non-Tesla DC charger? Many thanks!

Just use the same card ID eg from either Evie or Chargefox to enter into each charging provider’s app account settings
