Interior Design - How To Warm Up A Modern Home

- Designer Shirley Meisels of MHouse brought a 75-year-old home back to life with sleek finishes, a light-filled open-concept floor plan and mid-century modern decor that wows.
It was important to her client Alison Gordon that the house had quirky touches throughout, so Shirley added personality with unique finds. A striking piece of artwork and bench ground the front entrance, while ombré wallpaper adds drama in the dining room. A room divider with a seating nook separates the living room from the kitchen, without sacrificing light or closing off the spaces. In the living room, ample seating offers a hangout area for family and guests. Alison used quartzite countertops in the kitchen, which is a more durable alternative to marble. A walnut island and pantry provide ample storage, eliminating the need for upper cabinets. Upstairs, a diagonal black-painted statement wall is a graphic addition to the master bedroom and highlights the impressive 10-foot-ceiling.

This is a modern home, that has a lovely flow, and is warm and inviting. I don't know why people hate the nook. When you don't have any upper cupboards in a kitchen due to numerous windows (who doesn't want natural light), you do need more storage. The nook offers extra seating, and storage both in the kitchen and the living room (win win), and is unusual and quirky like the owner. As for the butt photo, it's kind of sexy which is why it may have been placed over the bed. I would have personally placed it near my elliptical/workout area as an incentive. I loved the entire house. Yes, I would loved to have seen a before and after also but a great project. One of my favourites.
Very love it guys
The divider is a nice design element. It looks really useful and full of storage but the subway tile on the side of the living room looks odd
@@leadupont8588 agreed on the subway tile. Ruined the effect. The vertical layout makes it even more disconcerting.
Love the nook and like useful, storage room dividers. The nook helps keep it open.
Every room came together beautifully! Thanks for sharing 👍
The ombré wallpaper and the nook are my faves!!!
Love the NOOK! What a great idea to allow light and company if one wants it in the kitchen. Awesome!
Not only the house decoration that I like, but the relationship between the owner and the designer as well. it is so warm my heart.
Their relationship is the best part a side from that awesome dining room.
I really like the nook. How clever to provide seating for two rooms as well as extending storage. Also I thought the wooden dining and living room chairs were attractive and sculptural.
Love this! Modern, minimalist yet warm and cozy.
the ombre wallpaper is awesomee
Shirley Meisels always does a beautiful job on all her clients homes!!!
Absolutely stunning interior. I love this room divider so much wtth the build in bench.
It is simply beautiful! I would prefer a huge kitchen with an island and a huge table, rather than a separate dining room. They are rarely ever used and it's just a room setting there alone. ❤
You two are cute together and I love these spaces. We are building onto an art deco home and whilst I am looking forward to straight walls, draft free, and having sunlight in my rooms - it kind of scares me a little. 'Quirkiness' might be just what I need, and some of décor items already meet that criteria. Thanks ladies xox
Love how the owner of the house was appreciative of the work done by the designer...love her personality also was not boring to watch for once and also the nook is so different very cool touch 😉
Hello Shirley nothing speaks of contemporary and warmth more than the dining room with its glass base n brass vases! That's an unusual combination along with the wall lights. The paint in the bedroom is an inspiring design in itself.Kudos.Thanks Alison for showcasing your home.Wish you both a Merry Christmas.
Love those dining room chairs! Would buy them instantly ! Also those two chairs in the living room look awesome. The nook is a great idea as well.
I absolutely love the two chairs in the living room, too - unfortunately, they cost far over $1000, each.
@@Halbmond Seriously? Wow.
Where did you find them?
lelexoxo303 the chair was designed by Norman Cherner. The licensed product is sold on chernerchair.com
One of my very favorite houses so far from House & Home. Just fantastic.
So the answer to how to warm up a modern home is... Hiring a professional designer? lol
This said, I absolutely love the dining room. The wallpaper gives it a really special vibe. Thumbs up.
I want that dining table and I LOVE the diagonally painted wall.
The bench on the entry ! 😍
I love it, natural lights will come in and looks more spacious and airy, very fresh and relax.
wow I love the way this house turned out, the homeowner seemed very nice and appreciative too
love the dining table and chair, also the divider design in the middle of the living and the kitchen.
I'm a huge fan of honeycomb tile first off...In addition, it is rare that I find so many other similar taste in one house...The unobstructed vies...and drama of the dark paint in the bedroom which I've done in my living room in the past...and the artwork - omg...I especially love the piece on the wall in the entrance....very lively space.
My favorite design so far on this channel!
Awesome project.....I love the way she listened to what the client wanted.
Love the dining chairs and lounge seating.
living and working in a nice place is. life changing
Love this modern house! Gorgeous!
My favourite is the dinning room. It's gorgeous
I wish we saw before pictures :) I bet it was dramatic change :D Great!
LOVE EVERY ROOM!
Very spectacular gradient painting of the walls in the living room
Svetlana Pavlova it's not paint. it's wallpaper. it does look great though.
they seem to have a great relationship!!
The nook is genius!
LOOOVE the nook! I have a thing for little personal cubby spaces!
Fabulous! Every single room....awesome!!
I JUST LOVE IT ! THANK YOU XO
Gorgeous design.
I am so envious to those windows in the front entry room- I have no windows in our condo hallway and it is so dark.
I love the house that design
Stunning!
Hi H&H Team,
my name is Rose. I live in France and have been subscribed to your channel for now 3 or 4 years. The more i watch your videos, the more i get passionate and "obsessed" aboute interior design.
Thus, today i would like to ask which advices would you give to someone interested in interior design career, specifically to someone who plans to change career from a completely different area.
Thank you so much in advance for your return.
Regards.
Looks great. Inspiration for decorating up from a black leather sofa.
Beautiful love the glass and living room :)
So in love with modern style!
there are many lovely features I like. well done designer and owner
omg, how much money some people have to have a house so beautiful!! i love the windows
I love this house and the way its decorated
They have NO IDEA how privileged they sound. Homeowner: "Oh I just had to call Shirley!" Shirley: "Well, I've done ALL of her previous homes and know the family's comings and goings."
🙄
The master room looks unfinish, but yet amazing
Love everything especially the art piece ❤️... not the butt lol, though I can appreciate but the dining room table... It's super exquisite. I would like some information on it please.
absolutely beautiful!!!
where can I find the ombre wrap like the dining room??????
the room devider is a great idea 👍
love love the home, very well done
She is so talented 😍
I'm glad she likes it, but I do love all the windows.
Alvar Aalto -style. I love it!
Love the layout.
Great chemistry between designer and client. It's a dream to find a designer who still wants to be friends with us....hahahahahahahahahahha.....
all i see in this video is MONEY.
this house is so beautiful anyway
Nice ideas!
I JUST shared my BEDROOM & BATHROOM MAKEOVERS on a tight BUDGET!
Nothing better than getting the look for less!
Great style.
the nook is so damn cool
I need that nook in my life
OK, so... when can I move in?
Beautiful!
The nook doesn't do much for me. Who wants to hear clunking pots and pans and sounds of food preparation while watching TV or having conversation with guests. They should have tried to open up and connect the formal dining room with the rest of the house. The formal dining room is cut off and away from where people are - either in the kitchen or the living room.
Me encantan sus videos, what a dream house😉
It is nice, but doesn't seem to embody warmth.
That's fine with me, it is merely my preference. Everyone has their likes. It's not that it is not a nice home, it is just a little too bare for me.I agree it's my opinion.
i thought it was warm
The master is my favorite.
Beautiful 👍👍
i liked everything except the bedroom
“It’s Sexy, it’s not too racy, it’s..”
“It’s a picture of a BUTT”
🤣🤣🤣
Awesome
Wow....just wow😃
wow amazing work
such a cool place!
love it all!
Just wow!🤗💕
I love the kitchen. I would have painted the bathroom a lighter color to add space. The nook as a divider sounds great but it looks disjointed. I think that's because it's in two pieces one has white tiles and the other side is wood. That's weird and it doesn't go.
This one is good!!!!
Modern style...great ideas

Shirley Awesome Work. I ll must contact you for my New Home.. Great keep it up
Love It!!!!!
Come to my house and design it up 😃 great ideas that blow up minds. Great work dear
People writing nasty comments and they probably live in dumps. This is modern and livable , clean and practical.
amazing !
Like it somewhat. Hate the butt picture. Not a fan of the nook.
I agree. That nook is stupid!
The butt is stupid. As someone else said, put it in a workout room. Or even a bathroom.
I agree...it's good.
This is the 1st time I've heard of somebody wanting to divide the living space from the kitchen, a bit unusual in this day and age
It would have been better if there was a BEFORE photo/video.
Beautiful home. Love all the windows and the picture of the butt 😂😂
where is the photograph in the foyer from? and the I absolutely love the light on the dining room wall but I have no idea where to find all of the great stuff shown in these videos. (@House & Home) please please please do a video on (reasonably priced) online art and decor sources that aren't "trade only."
I'm interior designer i hope to know more people in that field
this us really nice!
LOVE
The nook is a large clunky space grabber. It is so abrupt and seems very awkward just sitting there in the middle of the room - the flow of the room ends with that piece.
Lovely
Espectacular
