I have a theory that the department of mysteries was built where it was because of the gateway to death. I feel like they wouldn’t have been able to make an actual gateway between life and the afterlife. I think they found it, and decided to build the department around it.

Ugh, haven't read the book, but isn't it Malfoy's time-turner that they are using in The Cursed Child? The one Lucius Malfoy created, that wasn't "signed" into the Ministry. Moreover, I think he created it after the events of the Second Wizarding War.

The place in the department I REALLY am attracted to is that veil to the land of the dead. In the book, it was entrancing, and you could hear whispers from those who have died beyond it. I would definitely want to go in there and explore, even knowing there was no return journey. In Harry Potter lore, death is but the next great adventure.

I always felt that the department of mysteries was the most important place in the entire series. Like it's the place where all of the most powerful and potent magic that we see in the entire series originated from. The concepts of Love, intuition, time, death etc. All things that even muggles possess, but are undeniably magical in nature, originated from there.
These were the weirdest scenes in the book. But it tells so much. Even that they’d study Muggle brains - made sense they were threatened by Muggle intelligence having lost the war against them, even Hermione says that Muggle-borns have an advantage because they were so used to “thinking” before magic and continue to “think”.

I always wondered if there was some connection. Like the orphanage had some mysterious power related to the Deparment of mysteries that now one knew about but that is why Tom Riddle ended up there.

I think there is a slight plot hole in the statement where the Ministry announces that Muggle-borns are most likely to have obtained magic by force. I did a little research on Squibs and I found out that if a Squib marries a Muggle, the Magical blood that the Squib has will be passed down and can spark up generations later. Just because a Squib is incapable of Magic doesn't mean that they don't have Magical blood. I also think that this is the reason why Professor Slughorn thought that Hermione was related to a well-known wizard with the same surname. Granger may not be a muggle surname at all, but a wizarding surname whose flow was broken because of a Squib being born in the family and generations later, the magic sparks up inside of Hermione.

There's a theory that the veil was actually built by the Peverell brother who had the resurrection stone. He summoned his wife from the veil. The wife came back neither dead or alive and became depressed because she wasn't supposed to be alive. I bet that what would happen to any ghost who passes through the veil.

How do you become an unspeakable? I've always been so curious as to how you get to work for the dept of mysteries
Like all other ministry of magic jobs.....if there is an opening they must advertise it in some discrete manner and then you apply for it if you have the required level of OWL and NEWT grades in the required subjects.
Or they might recruit like the British spy agencies used to do by tapping potential candidates from university itself therefore in this case that will be Hogwarts with the help of a hogwarts professor.
@@vivek27789 I'd imagine the department is too high value to trust someone outside. I think they recruit people from inside the ministry. Those who have been there for decades and have worked in multiple departments would make the best fit as trustworthy.

I was always curious about the Veil in the Department of Mysteries death room, When Sirius Black is killed by Bellatrix LeStrange, Sirius falls through the Veil as he dies but does a healthy person who passes through the veil die as well or does it not affect them?

I think it only people who can see death are able to hear the voices in the veil. Harry saw his parents, Cedric among others die, Luna saw he mom die and Neville can hear the voices as well (can't remember who he saw die). Ron and Hermione cannot hear the voices because they have never seen someone.
Imagine the amount of unspeakables who suffered damage to their health trying to find how far you could go back without causing problems in time

It is astounding to me that we don’t go more in depth with these mysteries. Forget Harry Potter and that whole mess, I want stories about the veil and the different prophecies. Hell I’ll even take one about that love potion fountain.

Fun theory: Dumbledore's the leader of the department of mystery. This is one reason he never became the minister of magic and instead kept a career in education.
Explains how the order was allowed to guard the prophecy room.
He gave Hermione the time Turner in order to evaluate her for future employment as well, she would have been the one of the main three least likely to abuse the Turner.
Explains how he knew the power of love would be the only thing to overcome Voldemort.
Also the reason he had the potter cloak. They were studying the Hallows

The ministry of magical mysteries, now with more ministry managed mysteries that are magical
Wasen't the whole big breakout from Azkaban in The Order of the Phoenix mainly for Voldemort to get Rookwood back at his side, as he at that point realised he needed a much better understanding of the Department of Mysteries than what he had had acsess to earlier? Taking on Azkaban was a very risky move by Voldemort, who wanted to remain hidden at the time, and it could have revealed him. He would not have done it unless he really had to, and that must have been mainly to get Rookwood.
So the veil has been there as long as the department and presumably predates it. But it’s in a 20ft sunken pit on the 9th level of an already underground building just how deep is it? Something as powerful as that doesn’t seem like something you could transport, you’d build around. Are there caves under London? I know it has a famous underground and like all major cites it’s been built up over the years but that’s roughly 30ft at its highest. So like the highest point of artificial elevation from the ground as it was in the Mesolithic, some 11,000 years ago, to today is 30ft. I’m kinda thinking out loud, idk, any thoughts?
@5:05 I don't think the purpose of that room is to study the solar system. or I don't think its purpose is to solely study the solar system. I think they're studying one of the forces of nature in that room, gravity. and perhaps space (more in a physics sense as well as an astronomical sense).
Remember in the quote, I think Dumbledore is hinting a bit at what is studied in the Department of mysteries. It contains a force more wonderful and terrible than Death(The Death Room: life, death, soul), Human Intelligence (The Brain Room: thought), The Forces of Nature (The Time Room, The Solar System Room: Time, Space, Gravity), and Love (The Love Room).
I would hazard to guess that in other rooms that we don't see, they might be studying the other forces of nature. Magic(so that there might be an element of truth to that statement, even if the statement is not), electro-magnetism(or energy), nuclear forces, maybe. maybe they could be studying the weather. maybe the death room is dedicated to death and there is another room dedicated to life. where life comes from rather than where it goes.They study space, maybe they also study matter. They study thoughts and love. maybe they study other emotions like happiness. Maybe study luck.
