- Uber will not be issued a new private hire licence, Transport for London (TfL) has said. TfL concluded the ride-hailing app firm was not fit and proper to hold a London private hire operator licence.
It said it took the decision on the grounds of "public safety and security implications".
Confirming it would appeal against the decision, Uber said it showed the world "far from being open, London is closed to innovative companies". Some 3.5 million passengers and 40,000 drivers use the Uber app in London.

kieran I think the comments from my fellow country men tell you more about them than our country. There have been a number of criminal incidents involving sexual assaults and Uber has dome nothing and are not prepared to check drivers credentials. They also treat their drivers like dogs and there have been a number of crashes due to overwork. That's part of the reason. Uber doesn't have a God given right to provide taxis. If they cleablned their act up they would be welcome. Just because something is cheap doesn't mean it's safe or right.

UK is becoming a joke, London doesn't have 24/7 public transport and now they remove the only affordable choice for night transport.
To become an uber driver in London first you have to apply for a private hire licence (regulated by TFL and local councils).
So every uber driver has a Private Hire Licence anyway. What will happen is:
1)Uber drivers will be shared between minicab offices. Mini cab offices will change their way of working by phone only and use uberlike apps, some of them are already using similar apps.
2)Instead of 1 app you will download several apps to check which minicab office have a minicab around.
So not much will change really. As long as there is demand it will be supplied.
And?! Just take a cab or pay £5 a day for the bus.
Uber, they have issues that could of been dealt with in negotiations. However, to absolutely kill innovation and give into the "honest and fair" cab system, cheers London.

Reading alot of the comments here, i find it disturbing that Londoners are prepared and willing to put their security and safety at risk for the sake of cheaper taxi fares. If a stranger in a car you've never seen before at a train station or airport was to approach you, tell you his name and age and that he would help you get home, alarm bells would be ringing in your head and thus tell the man to go away but put a taxi app on the phone and suddenly this stranger becomes OK, a person you can trust. Are Londoners truly that gullible?

What Uber users need to remember is the only reasons why they are cheaper is because they do not follow the strict rules and regulations that have been in place for decades for existing cab drivers in London. Uber drivers have to buy their own cars. They have to buy their own uniforms. They might even need to pay for their own petrol. They don't bother to "Do The Knowledge". After paying for all these things their wages amount to next to nothing. Some of them might even be losing money. It's basically slavery. To all of you crying out that you can't get cheap taxi rides any more just consider how impoverished these taxi drivers were and how badly they were being treated by their employers.
For most uber is a side job. If you already own a car then do 2 to 3 journeys in your spare time at peak hours gets you some extra cash I don't see the problem. If they don't have a car already don't do uber :/

In my point of view those black cab companies are fighting for there existence I have seen it more and more here in the states that taxis and cabs are obsolete and replaced by uber and lyft if I'm right the city of London is backing up those black cabs for there jobs its so obvious.
This is fantastic news! Yes, Uber is comparatively cheaper and more convenient than most London cabs but the company does not carry out thorough background checks on drivers & has a lacklustre approach to dealing with criminal offenses. So, this means that you are getting on a car with someone who could potentially harm you. I myself was a victim of verbal assualt by an Uber driver who threathened/swore at me only because I pointed out that he was taking a longer route, and when I complained to Uber about this all they did was refunded my fare and dismissed the case. This needs to change. They cannot be running a business making money off us customers and at the same time putting our lives at risk like that whilst taking zero responsibility for anything. It's high time TFL took action and I'm glad that they finally did.

Not ‘fit’ and ‘proper’ is not a sufficient justification to not renew a liscence of a taxi service which is used on many peoples’ daily lives. Helps people get home safe drunk or sober.
In terms of sexual assault of course this is revolting, and these cases should be simply investigated once occurred. Personal checks should be strengthened and those drivers who are guilty of a crime prior or during driving with uber, should be suspended from Uber. As horrible as sexual assault is in a private car, this shouldn’t affect other drivers who are far from that, but take Uber serious.

Iv used both black cabs and minicabs and i support both, the only difference is a black cab driver is a fully qualified taxi driver and knows exactly were there going and the quickest way to get you there i got quoted £15 to go to my local hospital by a minicab firm and a black cab got me there for £14 at 3 in the morning. Theres many apps out there that you can download such as "gett" fixed taxi fares and alot more. P.S its not the end of the world.

I couldn't agree more with this legislative decision. Uber has no corporate responsability because the company does not own any capital so to speak. The cars are not provided by Uber and the company does not even provide maintenance to their employees vehicles let alone administer proper background checks on the drivers.
