    I actually like the look of a dead tree in the forest. Makes it more like a real forest for me😀

      With an afra they're quite likely to rot out and look a little too ratty after a while. It looked great with them now but in the future it probably would take away from the landscape.

    Some significant changes. I admire how you were able to turn misfortune, the dead trees, into a means to move the planting onto a new and undoubtedly improved stage in its development. ~ In recent years I’ve gained a greater appreciation of the fine art of staging , a skill that’s of critical necessity to produce award winning ‘show quality’ plantings, whether in Bonsai or the cactus and succulent world, amongst others. The way you have the rocks arranged in this forest looks quite natural. ~ I’d imagine that the dehydrated P. afra leaves aren’t as tasty as the fresh, juicy ones from a summer ‘harvest’. 😉

    17:30 i imagine just a big sharp rock about halfway up the height of that gap made by the main tree and the one to the right. im just spitting out the idea not as a critique at all just because i think its cool how many directions one can go when designing

    I had the same issue with some of my portulacaria afra, I had some die over the winter. I think if they don't get enough light, they start using all of there stored energy and once that's gone they die. I think Connor talks about it it one of your videos. In low light they kind of start eating them selves by using all of the stored carbohydrates. I think portulacaria afra really need a lot of light to stay heathy. I'm sure you probably already understand this though, I just thought I would share my theory of why my p Thanks for sharing what you do, I know it sounds strange but this channel has changed my life for the better. Thanks again.

      @@TheBonsaiZone - Thanks a lot. I’m very pleased that you enjoy my videos, as I’ve greatly appreciated over the years what you do on this channel . ~ Probably most folks from temperate climes are unaware what their ‘windowsill’ succulents are like in habitat, or when grown in a similar environ. I live in a subtropical botanical wonderland called coastal Southern California, with a Mediterranean climate. I’ll be posting more amazing plants and gardens on a regular basis. Wait to you see my Portulacaria afra forest ! Coming soon. Thanks again for your support.

    13:43 i almost felt like that one branch that was originally overlapping could come off too and the tree have a really cool vibe. the trunk has that nice elbow shape and the canopy is already looking great on that portion of the tree. im really loving this vid!!

    that one crispy dead one looked like typical port root rot. but not so much when you pulled it up with ok looking roots. it just had that bad spot in the trunk. the face book port bonsai group im in swears by never misting (at least never after trimming or root pruning/repotting) i mist around some of mine with no issues due to other types of trees under my lights need a good soak some times. but i have totally had better luck with keeping the mist away from my ports. havent lost a cutting or any thing since.. always cool videos nigel thanQ keep um coming

    Hi Nigel, very nice plants you developed back there, and very nice video you made, thanks for sharing. I do specifically cacti and succulents, I wouldn't use perlite for ports in a climate like Canada, I would use about half black lava and half brick/clay shatterings for them and won't water them much. To me the dead ones looked rotted. I think the secret of longlasting for lots of succulents is shortening the exposure time of roots with moisture and keeping them a bit thirsty all the time.

    hey Nigel! you might want to consider not misting your more succulent based trees. I’ve found that with my houseplants, it doesn’t benefit them and can even cause rot with the succulent ones. Since p. afra stores water in its leaves and trunk heavily it usually doesn’t prefer to have excess sitting on its roots or it’s leaves/trunk. I think that your trees may have rotted from the looks of it unfortunately :(( I wish you the best of luck 🥰🥰 love your videos!

    I think the ones that died got too dry from being on the edge of the pot and that pot prolly dries very uneven drying at the middle prolly a week later than the far edges. Just a theory. Hopefully many will learn from this loss. The trees that are good look very cool. It brought me to the bonsai zone for a sec too haha. Thanks for posting n take care!

    Thanks for the video. A light in the dark times, as always.
    I would be interested to know what you think caused the dead trees though. I noticed they were the smallest ones and around the outside edges of the pot. Is it possible that they were out competed by the larger trees in the centre?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  3 года назад +1

      It may have been the cold? The outer trees could have gotten the roots frozen and the trees closer to the center of the pot survived. I don't think they froze, but it might be a possibility.

    Hi Nigel, with some of my Portulacaria Afra, when new shoots grow at the end of where I cut... the new growth stays smaller than the diameter of where the branch was cut. They just keep adding leaves from there. Have you seen this? I love the taper you have in the branches in the forest planting!! and I’m trying to achieve this. But this problem is creating a “step down” instead of taper. Any ideas? Thanks! 🌱

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  3 года назад +1

      The step down effect from pruning will go away with time. It looks strange at first, but it eventually blends in nicely! I've seen that effect with a branch, I think it just needs more warmth and sunlight.
