2024 Subaru WRX review: Manual RS gets major safety upgrade to better rival Hyundai i30 N Sedan

- The 2024 Subaru WRX is helping to keep the sports sedan alive in the mainstream segment. While not alone, the Japanese icon is now (technically) in its fifth generation and has just received a significant model-year update that focuses heavily on boosting its manual variants' all-important safety credentials.
In short, three-pedal versions of the Hyundai i30 N Sedan rival now come with Subaru's EyeSight suite of advanced driver-assist systems, which were the reserve of the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) variants. That means autonomous emergency braking (AEB), blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control, among others, are finally fitted to the enthusiast's option for a $1500 premium.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Deputy Editor James Cleary gets behind the wheel of a mid-spec WRX RS with the six-speed manual to see if it also still brings the fun in 2024.

245KW and 420Nm would make it more competitive to other brands out there. In bad need of a power boost.
Is the wagon getting the six speed? If it is I'm ponying up
No, CVT only.
@@dimsoneill booooo....not you the CVT 😆
Was this filmed around the hawkesbury?
Yes, it was around that area
Wonder if this year's model has the front left clunking suspension like previous years?
What’s the history with that? Can you let me know? I’m kinda in the market for one, so would be good to know some more about this. Thanks.
Subaru are aware of the front clunking suspension, i have the dealers report. Unfortunately they cannot do anything until more people complain about it. Mine started making noise around 10k. It's like a squeeky bed going around corners. If you don't get the clunking then you're lucky @bazinga615
Australia & NZ Subaru WRX VB 2022+ Owners & Enthusiasts >
@@pabloortiz770 thanks for that. So it’s a creaky suspension and/or clunk?
Its called a gear lever. Now this is called hair
Subaru has forgotten why they were interesting 30 years ago
Good review. Not everyone is a bogan !
I'll just stick with my 18 sti. I've driven a vb and they're ok for a daily but in terms of performance, they're pretty lackluster stock.
No mention of the ugly plastic fenders, ridiculous rear bumper, terrible suspension and the fact that there is ZERO steering feel. Carsguide should do actual reviews instead if paid puff pieces. Give me a call when you grow a spine.
Poor review… names competitors like mx5 and brz but doesn’t mention i30 N sedan? Buyers of a wrx are most interested in its performance and relative to its competition.. reviewer says it should go 0-100 in high 5s… that’s it? Talks about rear headroom more.. these sort of cars need more of the review focused on performance and actual tests!!! Not just driving around town
I agree, so strange no mention of i30 sedan.
U sound way too positive for a 7.9 score and what is technically a not really improved car over the past 2 years
Still got plastic guards
Not a power upgrade after all these years
No power upgrade, its still a CVT!
Had a test in this very model from Subaru indooroopilly (lovely staff and very professional)
The car is underwhelming in terms of performance and sense of occasion.
The main screen is obtrusive to the cabin layout
The active safety features get in the way of the driving experience, arguably makes it less safe - very distracting
Gear change is agricultural
Non existent sound in terms of induction and exhaust burble.
The guy is being dishonest in his description of power delivery.
Suggest to save your money and buy something that's exciting, innovative and worth the money.
Funny intro. I have two kids who learned in and drive manuals, and a third who is learning. They like to be in control of their cars. Super Gen Z skills....
What is with the boomer treating viewers like ignorant children?
