- In this video, I'm taking you back to the Great Depression era by baking a mock apple pie-a clever recipe that uses simple, pantry-staple ingredients to recreate the taste of apple pie when fresh fruit was scarce. After that, I'll give you an exclusive tour of the start of my small desert homestead pantry, where I stock up on essentials and focus on self-sufficiency. Join me as I share tips on food storage, preserving staples, and creating a sustainable food supply in the desert. Whether you're preparing for emergencies or just looking to live more off the land, you’ll find inspiration and practical advice here!
Pie recipe:
2 cups water
1 cup white sugar
2 tsp baking powder or cream of tartar
30 buttery round crackers (ritz)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 - 9” prepared pie shell or pastry dough
Topping/crumble:
1 cup crushed butter crackers
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/3 cup butter melted
Preheat oven @ 425 degrees F
Add water, sugar, baking powder together in pot & bring to boil - stirring
Drop in whole crackers (do not crumble) & boil for 5 minutes
Remove from heat & dump mixture into pie pastry/shell
Sprinkle pie with cinnamon & drizzle lemon juice
Crating the crumble topping by stirring crushed crackers, brown sugar, cinnamon & melted butter together. Once thoroughly mixed to crumble consistency, spoon overtop of pie.
Bake for 15 minutes & reduce oven temp to 375 - finish baking for 15 more minutes.
