I think this is the first film I watched online after I discovered Bela Lugosi last Halloween on TCM. I was going down his list and this title promised to be so much fun. I imagined an alternate version of vampire Bela going around, giving the death kiss to his lovely ladies, but on the lips this time. Alas, no such luck! Huge letdown. Thus started my never-ending quest for rare gems such as White Zombie, traveling thru dozens of snoozefests where Bela Lugosi serves us his very best, even when he's grossly underused. He still manages to eclipse everyone else in the cast, even by merely standing in the background, as in Scared to Death! XD Now that's talent, and this is why I shall continue to suffer through the "Human Monster"'s, the "One Body Too Many" and the "Spooks Run Wild" flops, well worth it to find gems like The Silent Command or The Devil Bat, or just to see our master vampire butlering around, pretending he's not the ultimate blood-drinking god. XD Thanks for posting!
I think, in addition to White Zombie, Lugosi gave great performances in Son of Frankenstein (as Ygor), The Body Snatcher (1945) and The Black Cat (the 1934 one) -- incidentally all 3 with Karloff.
Good movie, doesn’t matter if it has color running thru it in spots, doesn’t matter if it’s a flop, doesn’t matter if the cops are dumb or anything else that some will say about this movie. This is made when talkies was in their infancy. They still had a story and a plot to it. I love these black and white movies some good, some dumb, some makes you laugh, some will make you cry, some will leave you at a place you might go but these actors and actresses paved the way for the movies of the today which most I can’t stand to watch because there is no plot that you might say comes with the story if you can call it that
Do you have anyway to get any of the films BELA LUGOSI did in Hungary? There are supposedly about a hundred, in one , Lugosi plays Jesus and it’s said to be one of his best performances. I think there might be some interesting films of his hidden away somewhere? 🤔
Although it's a poor quality, low resolution print, this copy includes the hand-tinted color special effects frames missing from most prints. Look closely at the flashlights and gunshots during the final chase/shootout for VERY faint red flashes from the guns and yellow spots for the flashlights.
mxylpx - Manners was also in Boris Karloff's _The Mummy,_ Bela Lugosi's _Dracula_ and many other popular films during the '30s.. He was regarded as a rising star, but he quit Hollywood because he was gay and refused to stay 'in the closet'. He acted on the stage after he left Hollywood.
Anytime Neila. I visited your channel and know that you like him. You might like the serial Chandu the Magician, a cliffhanger. He’s fairly young. I have 15 episodes here on my channel.

4:58 "Oy, that's gonna cost me a fortune! What a calamity!" There were a few Jewish producers in Hollywood in those days who were fresh from the streets of New York, of whom this was a comic caricature. You couldn't write such a role today, but I doubt that anybody was much offended then, Jews included.

I love these old movies, but almost all of the characters are stereotypical. The stupid cop, the comedic side kick, wisecracking newsmen, the list goes on.

The Invisible Ray is good too with Karloff.

Thoroughly enjoyable... Good story, too.
Thank you

Okay...It got me. It totally got me. It fed me serving after serving of red-herring, and I swallowed them all.
Realize this is a very old film and thanks for posting these Bela gems. My question is , what causes the wavy background in some scenes?
The wavy background is caused by selecting 'image stabalization' when loading a movie in You Tube. A no-no.
@Lidjya Black-and-white No, the original film was not wavy like this. It's a RUclips thing.
It could be that the original film had degraded. Film was very vulnerable to damage in those days.

Duly noted. Thank you for your Film School. I just got an online certificate from UPenn last month and appreciate any help.
David Manners was white bread bland, but Bela is always a joy to watch.
I kept expecting Dwight Frye to show up.
He had too much class for this.
Great who dunit "when the lights go out look out"
Fun flick..pity they didn't use Manners' cocky character(he's quite good!) as a sleuth for a series...

David Manners was too much of a THITHY for anything but the lightest roles. Jut ask his boyfriend Frederic William Mercer.
@@leelarson107 The shallowness of your snarky response only reveals a lack of knowledge and understanding of acting.
This movie is pretty boring, but it's worth watching it by Bela Lugosi, it's my favorite actor

21:42 there is coloer in this movie. 😱😁
There are patches of red and blue hues throughout the whole movie.
A touch of antisemitism running through this film; otherwise not bad.
