I'm so glad you brought this back!! I love this roundtable discussion before Tony Night. I'm with you guys -- I think Best Leading Actress in a Musical is going to be the category of the evening and definitely the most stressful. Both ladies turn in extraordinary performances, and for one of them to walk away without the Tony for their work (and body of work in Kelli's case) is already devastating. Can't wait for tomorrow!!
hpfan This year's Best Actress In A Musical race reminds me of the tight Best Actress Oscar race between Viola Davis for The Help vs. Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady three years ago. And this year's Best Musical race reminds me a lot of the Best Picture race between Gravity and 12 Years A Slave last year, in which you had the big crowd-pleasing box office juggernaut (Gravity and An American In Paris), vs. the smaller, more serious subject matter worth looking at in a new light (12 Years A Slave and Fun Home).
Alex Meyer But the difference there was that the outcome was (mostly) predictable. I knew 12 Years a Slave was gonna take Best Picture and Gravity was gonna take Best Director. This Tony race on the other hand was more interesting.
Jeffrey Kare While 12 Years A Slave certainly had a strong chance to win, many also thought Gravity had a chance to pull off an upset win. I'm glad 12 Years A Slave won though.
Looking back in hindsight, I'd say this Tony race for Best Musical was much more comparable to the Best Picture race of 2016 between LA LA LAND and MOONLIGHT. Especially given how one of the many influences behind the former film was the original movie of AN AMERICAN IN PARIS while the latter film was dealing with the subject of LGBT like FUN HOME (not to mention that both projects had multiple performers play the main character in three different stages of their lives).
My full Tony predictions (which I also posted on the website Gold Derby): Best Play: The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time Best Musical: Fun Home Best Book Of A Musical: Fun Home Best Original Score: Fun Home Best Revival Of A Play: The Elephant Man Best Revival Of A Musical: The King And I Best Actor In A Play: Alex Sharp-The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time Best Actress In A Play: Helen Mirren-The Audience Best Actor In A Musical: Michael Cerveris-Fun Home Best Actress In A Musical: Kristin Chenoweth-On The Twentieth Century Best Featured Actor In A Play: Nathaniel Parker-Wolf Hall: Parts One & Two Best Featured Actress In A Play: Annaleigh Ashford-You Can’t Take It With You Best Featured Actor In A Musical: Andy Karl-On The Twentieth Century Best Featured Actress In A Musical: Judy Kuhn-Fun Home Best Director Of A Play: Marianne Elliott-The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time Best Director Of A Musical: Sam Gold-Fun Home Best Choreography: An American In Paris Best Orchestrations: An American In Paris Best Scenic Design Of A Play: The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time Best Scenic Design Of A Musical: An American In Paris Best Costume Design Of A Play: Wolf Hall: Parts One & Two Best Costume Design Of A Musical: The King And I Best Lighting Design Of A Play: The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time Best Lighting Design Of A Musical: An American In Paris
Do these every year! I'm with Groff, I missed them dearly last year. I just love hearing what you all have to say, as people who are clearly qualified and having seen most -- if not ALL -- of the nominated work. :D
The often mentioned "vote splitting"...isn't a thing. See: Sophie Okonedo (Raisin in the Sun), Mark Rylance (Twelfth Night), Douglas Hodge (La Cage), Marcia Gay Harden (God of Carnage), Scarlett Johansson (View from the Bridge) and the list goes ever on.
+Sam Eckmann Vote splitting is real. That's the reason why Judy Kuhn, Sydney Lucas and Emily Skeggs all lost to Ruthie Ann Miles because when you have multiple nominees from the same show in the same category, unless one is obviously more of a standout, it makes it harder for voters to choose who's the best. You want further proof of vote splitting? Read about how neither Bette Davis nor Anne Baxter won Oscars for the movie All About Eve because they were both nominated in the lead actress category, thus making Oscar voters unsure of who deserved it more. If Davis had been nominated as a lead and Baxter as a supporting, they both would have won I think. The movie did win Best Picture though.
I am genuinely upset that no one pulled for Beth Malone for the Best Lead Actress in a Musical category! In my opinion she's an obvious choice. (and none for Leanne Cope bye)
I don't know why the hell you didn't mic everyone, Paul. There were level problems between you and the rest of the panel. And then when I turned up my volume so that I could hear everyone, the transition music came in way too loud.
Ryan is the sweetest guy on the planet.. you guys are so lucky to have him

Such a difficult year of choices. Of course I'm biased but pulling for Fun Home and King & I. Come on Sydney Lucas and Kelli O'Hara!
please do this again this year!
You're all playing Devil's Advocate but then voting for the same two things in everything lol
LOVE THIS!!!
BetteDancerBroadway19 Hey, you're not the boss of me!
***** Huh? I just said I love this video?
Ah, I see. I read it as a command: "LOVE THIS!!!"

This video is SO QUIET, I can barely hear anyone :(

Fun Home!!!
Mind making the audio louder for the voices? I keep having to turn it up, but then when the music plays, it blasts my ears. :/
I am genuinely upset that no one pulled for Beth Malone for the Best Lead Actress in a Musical category! In my opinion she's an obvious choice. (and none for Leanne Cope bye)
KELLI
Will you guys do one this year? I guess not if it hasn't been released by now...
Now that the show is over, I got 19 out of 24 right!!
too quiet!
I don't know why the hell you didn't mic everyone, Paul. There were level problems between you and the rest of the panel. And then when I turned up my volume so that I could hear everyone, the transition music came in way too loud.
Is Ryan's eye color real or contact lenses?
They're real. It looks awesome right?!😆😆
Cant hear a damn thing !
