I really like this scene as a kid! There really wasn't anything else like this at the time. A movie about Superman fighting a computer! Especially since back then it was still a relatively new thing and computers still had a mystical quality.
I was scared senseless when I first saw this scene. I seem to recall there was a tv documentary about the making of this movie and Annie Ross saying she was in the make up chair for 3 to 4 hours whilst the circuit make up was applied to her face and arms. And do not get me started on those contact lenses!!!! Freaking AWESOME! But did anyone notice the blooper in this scene??? When Vera gets sucked into the computer she was wearing white gloves. When the computer applied the circuits to her hands...........THE GLOVES WERE GONE!!!!!!!
Looking at these comments, about how scared people were watching this as a kid, I admit, so was I. Yet when I look at this now, meh. But at that time, the cyborged woman frightened me.
For me I don’t think it was so much her being a cyborg, but just the machine dragging her inside, and the transformation was what scared me as a kid. Like much of my childhood horror flicks they lost their scare factor as I got older.
My rewrite of Superman III: A mysterious spacecraft lands in metropolis containing Superman's cousin Supergirl, After rescuing Supergirl from a government facility Superman adopts her. Eventually an alien probe lands on earth and attacks a small mining town. After Superman and Supergirl defeat the probe Supergirl explains that it was sent to earth to look for her because she fled to earth to escape Brainiac and that he invaded Krypton rounding up all the survivors and sending them to the bottled city of Kandor. Superman then travels into deep space to fight brainiac himself but gets captured allowing brainiac to read his memory and discover earth. As brainiac attempts to invade earth Supergirl rescues Superman and they defeat brainiac by overloading his ship's phantom drive. Brainiac's ship is destroyed but unfortunately both Supergirl and the bottled city of Kandor are sucked into the phantom zone. After attending Supergirl's funeral a saddened Superman sits on the roof of the daily planet staring at the night sky, he is then joined by Lois and Jimmy who cheer him up by telling him that Supergirl might still be out there somewhere, Superman smiles at the two of them and they all look at the stars. Then the final shot would be Supergirl and the people of Kandor rebuilding Krypton in the Phantom Zone. In case you're curious the inspirations for this rewrite were Superman: Last Son and Superman: Brainiac.

Me too. The transformation scene was horrific for my seven-year-old self. But still nowhere near as scary as seeing the dark superman become angry in the junkyard.
I was willing to accept a lot of the events in this movie just because I wanted Superman to be a hero, but he held up the San Andreas trench. And he gets pulled in by some wires?
The computer could detect any living being's weaknesses so it was powerful enough to neutralize superman. Superman was also probably not at full strength from being exposed to the Kryptonite for several minutes. That's why he went and got the acide because he knew he couldn't do it on his own.
he always uses his head at the end of every superman movie than his strength.. superman I change back the clock. superman II switch the power when he was in there, the three was out there. superman III use an zero dangerous acid to destroy the computer. Superman IV make a solar eclipse by moving the moon in front of the sun.. Nuclear man hates darkness.
This is my favorite Superman movie when I was a kid in the 90s sorry for the first time when I was a kid in the 90s awesome it was like Terminator versus Superman and the daughter of Skynet
I always sympathize with writers who have to create Superman stories. I love the character (especially as played by Christopher Reeve); but, when your hero has only three weaknesses -- Kryptonite, magic, and hypnotism -- creating a credible antagonist so that you can actually get a DRAMA going is not at all easy. (In the Broadway musical based on Superman, the villain waged psychological war on Our Hero, destroying his self-confidence and briefly reducing him to a catatonic state -- which was at least an original tack.) But when, as here, the writers are reduced to showing the Man of Steel getting pushed around by things that he ought to be able to wave away with one hand, they are clearly either desperate or facing an imminent deadline. (A METAL CABLE AROUND HIS NECK?). I find it interesting that in none of the Superman movies were either magic or hypnotism used to overcome the big guy. I'm not saying that they had to be; just that the writers may have made things harder on themselves than they needed to.
I have the full extended TV version of Superman 3. The destruction of the computer is longer. Here the shot of the 3 electrical probes (that are sending lightning to the overhead pylons) collapsing has been cut out.
The Machine just didn't see the danger... Superman just went in there with plain ol' can of acid. The Machine didn't know is, when that stuff gets hot enough it will eat though anything. I guess you can say that it died of 'acid indigestion'.
