    I loved this format of covering Fincher’s films chronologically and then ranking them based on your favorites rather than just rank them first. I felt that I got a cool history lesson about Fincher and I now need to watch more of his films as I’ve only seen The Social Network. I would love you to explore more directors.

      @@Fatpie42 I deeply love murder mystery movies, and the Zodiac is by far my favorite simply because it's real, and when the real is as gripping and terrifying as the story of the Zodiac Killer, it enthrals in a way that fiction can’t. Not to mention its accuracy. I don't get scared easily, but that basement scene is one of the most unnerving experiences I've ever had watching a movie. I would also go as far as to say that Zodiac is the best portrayal of obsession that I have seen depicted on film. From a filmmaking standpoint, everything is perfect. I could go on and on, but I don't want to end up writing an essay in the RUclips comment section. 😂

    • @Fatpie42
      @Fatpie42 3 года назад

      @@Wolfe-zl4ld Interesting. But murder mysteries set out a selection of possible suspects, don't they? I've never really thought of Zodiac as a murder mystery because it never really felt to me like we got any actual genuine understanding of the evidence.

      @@Fatpie42 that's why it's perfect, because the police never had either. The police was lost, and the movie shows that Zoadic won.

    Zodiac is a perfect movie, and it's not just technical craft, it's the acting, the script, the score, the suspence, the way the movie builds and keeps you in the edge all the time. I've watched 3 times, with all due respect calling this movie "too long" It's nonsense, it flies by. The basement scene it's the scary scene ever put to film in my humble opinion.

    I’m really loving your videos lately. Ranking a director’s filmography is absolutely a great idea! Behind our lord and saviour Denis Villeneuve, Fincher is another one of my favourite directors 😉
    I think I shared a lot of the same sensibility with you, because I also felt the length of Zodiac. You’ve only talked about one of my favourite Fincher films (i.e. Seven) in Part 1, so I can’t wait for the rest of the list.

    Marianna I am one of those people who consider Zodiac to be his best. I have seen it several times and as soon as it is over I want to watch it again. It could be that I grew up precisely at that moment and in that place and I can testify that he completely nails it. History is a big deal for me. I truthfully can't think of one film that has ever really captured the cauldron of San Fransisco during the hippie era. This moment is slightly past that here and the focus slightly different, but damn this is as close as we ever may see. So starting right there it's done what no film has ever done before. Next I think the acting and the story are incredible. I think by focusing on Graysmith (I had read his book long before the movie came out.) he allowed the mystery of the evil to leak out beyond the obvious details and reconstructions. And then there is the growing mood within the film. The obsession of Graysmith is encircled by a darkness which only grows more impenetrable as it film unspools. And the murders are particularly stark in the way I would imagine they might be in reality. (Although who can really say except the victims.) And odd moments like the visit to the basement or entering the hardware store, throwaway moments in a lesser film, are lodged deeply in my memory. And they remind me of real moments of unease. When I was young I was picked up hitchhiking exactly this area of California at night by a man with a pockmarked face in a small sports car who was playing the Doors "The End'. Still can't get that out of my head simply for dread. Fincher taps into that sense of unease effortlessly in this film.
    Now I know you have become a big Benjamin Button fan. But frankly apart from the reverse aging magic trick I can't even remember the point of the film. For me it's Zodiac. It's in my top 5 of the 21st Century, somewhere after Martyrs and Pan's Labyrinth. But isn't it great that we all see different things? Or that Fincher is such an artist that we can debate which are his best films?
    So YEAH! Heck yeah! I want part two! And I want more Marianna deep dives into worthy directors. (I can see Denis Villeneuve coming up.) You can make them an hour long each I'll stick with you. И мне нужен твой список Тарковского! (By the way I love the way you are doing the ranking in chronological order. Classy move.)

  • @SuperWhofan1
    @SuperWhofan1 3 года назад +3

    Zodiac is Fincher’s finest film. Its long runtime makes you feel the decades roll by and how frustrating it must have been for the main character in his hunt for the truth. I also believe it’s the second greatest film about journalism ever made. The tedious day after day research was not overlooked here and the performances were stunning especially Mark Ruffalo. This slow burn of this film just washes over you especially on the second viewing. This film is strangely cerebral to watch which sounds really odd since it’s a manhunt of a serial killer but it’s true. Fincher could have edited out a good chunk of run time but it’s effect on the audience would have been reduced considerably. When the screen fades to black at the end you feel the frustration of every journalist and police officer who dedicated so much of their life to knowing the truth. My advice is give this movie a second watch during some downtime like a snowstorm perhaps. This movie grows on you and in my opinion is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Happy holidays🍾🍸🎄

      I think they had real trouble working out how to market Fight Club. The trailers just seemed to show bunch of men fighting in basements, but it's about so much more than that. It's essentially about a guy losing all faith in his role as a citizen of society and joining a kind of counter-cultural chaotic extremist group, but there's so much more to it than that. And to think that around the same time there was so much buzz for American Beauty, where rebellion against society just equalled smoking weed and fantasising about a teenage girl.

    Wow I don't know why I never watched that video it's rigth up my alley but hey better late than never. Pretty spot on list so far except for Zodiac, not going to lie it's my personal favorite I know I'm a bit weird for this but still I love everything about it plus the way they so accurately recreated some real life crimes is really chilling for me. Anyway I could go on all day with that movie so I'll just shut up now still great stuff and go watch part 2

    It still blows my mind that in the middle of his A River Runs Through It/Interview With The Vampire/Legends Of The Fall hot-guy superstardom, Brad Pitt took on Se7en. Props to him for challenging himself instead of just coasting.

    Alien 3 is an absolute gem. I love the whole feeling of the film and it’s contrast to Aliens.

    Do the Coen Brothers next! Yet another case where everyone ranks them completely differently, but where their directing style is absolutely compelling.

    Love the video.
    I haven't seen all his movies (I know them though), but I doubt any of them will surpass Fight Club. I am not going to talk about it for obvious reasons though :) (sorry for the cheap pun). I have soft spot for The Game. I read your review on Letterboxd, and while I agree with it, there are times when I am willing to forgive and forget :). I am probably in very small minority that didn't love 7 as much as everyone else.

    Giving Zodiac the same rating as Panic Room should be a criminal offence. Seriously tho, great ranking format! Doesn't spoil the rating when the movie comes up.

    Curious Case of Benjamin Button is the only Fincher film that I haven't seen yet. Fight Club and Gone Girl are easily my favourite ones.

    I loved the ending of The Game... it's fantastic! Seven is my numer two of his... sheer perfection in every aspect. Panic room is excellent and extremely suspensful. Fight Club is overrated, in my opinion... is the one from THIS LIST I've rewatched the least (Is a great movie, but not that much fun for me to re watch) and the extended cut of Zodiac is AMAZING.
    Can't wait for the next part of this.

    Fincher has made so many of my all time favourites, so it's really tough for me to rank his movies. I still have yet to see Panic Room, Mank, Alien³ or Benjamin Button but my ranking of the ones I have seen would be
    7. The Game 7.2/10
    6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 8.4/10
    5. Gone Girl 9.4/10
    4. Zodiac 9.7/10
    3. Fight Club 9.9/10
    2. The Social Network 9.9/10
    1. Se7en 10/10

    I wish Fincher could do a film version of the Playstation 3 game 'Heavy Rain'. He would be the perfect Director for it.

    I really like seeing the films discussed chronologically and then rated. It’s a great way to revise these kinds of lists. I’m sadly behind in watching all of Fischer’s work, but I do agree - so far - with these rankings, except for ‘Fight Club’, which I just didn’t like at all on first viewing. Maybe I was too old to “get it” and I’m also not really a fan of the ‘unreliable narrator’ genre, but it would definitely be towards the bottom of my list, technical and acting achievements aside.
