The typical David Fincher color palette isn’t very colorful. Exceptions aside, Fincher typically forgoes any bright or saturated colors for something much more subdued. Beyond a simple aesthetic choice, there is also storytelling value within a David Fincher color palette. A filmmaker as precise as Fincher doesn’t leave any decision unconsidered so what is behind his choice of colors? In this video, we’ll hear from Fincher and his collaborators on color in David Fincher movies and how it fits into his overall approach.
The David Fincher Color Palette - Desaturation
If there is one consistent trait to a David Fincher color palette, it is desaturation. As Production Designer Arthur Max explains, Se7en is a “no-color color movie.” Creating such a muted and controlled palette, especially away from primary and vibrant colors, has a number of effects. One effect is that when a bold color is used, the audience will notice it. In Se7en, it also allows the appearance of bright red to stand out even more - which is reserved for blood, John Doe, and the relationship between them.
    David Fincher's Color - Characters
Fincher will often attach color to a character. In The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the color red was used exclusively for Daisy. In Se7en, Det. Somerset is surrounded by dark colors. In his apartment, we get dark Earth tones and deep greens to match his pessimistic worldview.
Color in David Fincher Movies - Settings
Where Fincher does make pronounced choices in his color palette is in settings. Often he will wash the entire room in a single color - like the nostalgic yellow in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button or the oppressive orange heat in Alien 3. For the “Sloth” crime scene in Se7en, cinematographer Darius Khondji explains how they used green in the lighting to give the scene a “moist, fungal” look.
The David Fincher color palette isn’t bold or even that visually appealing but that’s the point. To create the dark and dangerous moods of his subject matter, it makes perfect sense to let color become equally dark.

The color palette of Se7en really sets the dark tone/atmosphere of it, it's very effective, but all David Fincher movies does this especially this and The Game as well as Panic Room, He really has a eye for knowing what he wants in the frame. I would love to know what his stance is on Film vs. Digital if he's for one or against one, as well as his favorite cameras and lenses to shoot on.

While low contrast desaturation works for other movies I really miss when movies used to have vibrant colors, you can still create a gritty atmosphere while still using vibrant colors but nowadays many filmmakers are using this trending color palette to cut corners or they're just lazy learning color theory.

Yellow is the color of the investigaion in Zodiac, the hunt for the truth. over the years, as proportioned by the length of the fade in/out, characters leave and go back to the hunt, with yellow appearing on their clothes and enviorments. the whole newspaper office is yellow when the killings start, but fade with fading intrest - RDJ has a yellow vest while in the middle of the case, but becomes just as desaturated by his character's retiring from the story.

Dont get it wrong though new film makers. fincher still absolutey uses colours just on a more technical and meticulous level which can be hard to distinguish for newer film makers like myself who might take desaturation as meaning barely any colour in the shots and scenes when thats just not true.
A good example is the bride of frankenstein
A black and white film that still heavily relied on colour to make the film work with what they needed to stick out like her hair and other things in the scene. Furniture, lights, etc
Desaturation does not mean no colour in the scene as a matter of fact it often means the opposite
It mostly means more work in post to achieve a more desaturated look and more time on set propping areas that are full of colour that will later be edited down in post.
Hence why they allowed brad to wear all those flashy colours around the 3.45 mark in this video. it actually adds to desaturated colours looking more natural after post as opposed to wearing muted colors on set which would almost come off colourless when desaturated in post and ruin the whole effect.
Extremely technical and something i hope to learn more about one day on actual sets and not just doing my own little one man crew shorts as its hard to learn all these techniques by yourself without second eyes and opinions and someone to remind u to pay attention to all these techniques
