An adventurer with the British East India Company, Forster’s journey up the Ganga during the late 1700s helped the cartographers of British Raj map the Indian subcontinent. Living through various episodes of the late 18th century, he travelled to Kashmir, Persia and back to England in a journey that began along the Ganga at Hooghly. He spent his last years at Nagpur as the company’s envoy at the Bhonsla king’s court from 1788 to 1791. Here he died at the age of 39, reportedly of fever in 1791.
