    You know, I have a strong suspicion that the Fiendish Five only formed to take out Sly's parents. I think it's very much possible they split up soon after the murder and just kept up with each others wearabouts in case it was ever needed.

      I replayed the game for its PS5 rerelease and had this idea for the first time. It'd been like at least ten years since they killed Sly's parents, not the most unlikely thing that they'd all gone their seperate ways since then.

      agreed, I always saw it as Clockwerk enlisting the help of some heavy hitters in their respective fields in order to guarantee he got it done. Much less connected and cohesive compared to the operations of the Klaww Gang

    My favorite thing about RUclips and I guess the internet as a whole is the ability it gives to find people that share similar interests as yourself, the fact that I kind find not only someone but a whole community of people that still share their interest in a PlayStation 2 video game released in a different decade is amazing. These series of games made up a huge amount of my childhood and I still replay them whenever I want to remember from the good ol' days, a simpler time I guess without the stress or awareness of the world that being a child gives you. Sorry for my rambling but I found this video at 3am and I just appreciate that you took the time and finished such a large project pertaining to such a niche :)

      Easily one of the most genuine comments I've received on the channel. I worry that people may leave this video thinking I hate the game, but I don't. I love Sly 1, I just find don't find it to be as compelling as later titles, but hey, that's hindsight. This series was my favorite growing up as a kid, and I love to revisit them often. I play on doing a Sly 2 and 3 video, similar to this one, as well sometime within the next year.

      @@nopnapnarp8047 my favorite game I'd say would be sly 3 but I'm pre biased as I played the series in reverse order as a kid. Even though out of trilogy I prefer sly 2 and 3 to 1 I can appreciate the foundations it laid. But for me as fun as the gameplay was it was the story that set apart the games from the others I played. Sly being my first ever gameworld I've truly been immersed in. I can appreciate the amount of detail you went into this critique as with the amount of times I've played sly 3 I could probably give a similar amount haha. I do hope this series does come back in some way maybe similar to crash Bandicoot but who knows. Also that movie is long gone and I don't even know what's going on with that tv show. Guess time will tell... Litteraly I'm building a time machine to find out(I wish)

    My theory for what pages Clockwerk had from the Thievius Raccoonus, were pages dedicated to himself considering Sly mentions he was referenced in the book in the second game, and the fact they had so little information about him in the first game makes it all more plausible. Great work! I'm looking forward to what you have to say about Band of Thieves!

    I don't know, I actually really liked Mz. Ruby's boss fight. I remember being frustrated with it when I was younger, but when I replayed it a few years after that I actually kind of had a strange nostalgia for it. The racing sections were the bane of my existence though, and I remember needing to ask my older brother to beat it for me, and I always thought the hometown cooking mission was just stupid even as a child. The moving platform levels were always really fun to me! They always seemed just like fun little side things that allowed you to focus more on the environment and the enemies.
    The shooting scenes with Murray were probably largely just a desire to put more Murray into the game, you're dead right,but I will defend the Carmalita one a little bit:
    It was a major story beat. Carmalita putting differences aside to help Sly, as you get to see Sly in the vulnerable position needing someone else's help without having to FEEL helpless as the player (which is seldom a good thing in games like this; generally only in horror games is robbing the player of a sense of agency a good thing.) So the player gets to feel like they're still in charge, while still getting the point across that Carmalita was willing to help sly in his moment of weakness to overcome a common foe. The only other thing that could have done this is making Carmalita a fully playable character with her own moveset, something they likely didn't have the time nor resources to do especially for just one mission.

    • @toasterofdoom9629
      @toasterofdoom9629 Год назад +3

      OH, also, one thing I forgot about: Sorry to burst your bubble but I'm pretty sure that your theory that Raleigh and/or Mugshot alerted Mz. Ruby, or their downfall did, that sly was coming, is sort of just wishful thinking on your part. She directly claims that she knows it's sly messing with her stuff because of her psychic powers. Psychic powers that have already been established as being real, if it wasn't obvious enough by the fact she could raise the dead, by the fact she was a part of the Fiendish Five purely because of her ability to predict the future.
      Another thing:
      You claim that no other member of the fiendish five have a scene where their evil is directly addressed, and complain about the scene, but yet you talk on about how much you love the interaction between the Panda King and Sly; an interaction that could only exist after Sly has born witness to the Panda King's atrocity. Moreover, other members of the Fiendish Five have done similarly terrible things. Raleigh has sunk and likely killed unknown countless ships worth of people intentionally, Mugshot drove an entire city's worth of people out of their homes at the barrel of a gun (which sort of has to make you ask how he hasn't attracted any attention from the rest of the United States, but I digress;) and Mz. Ruby has enslaved countless restless spirits into serving her as her undead henchmen.
      Also, the chicken thing with Mz. Ruby has much worse implications: The chickens ARE people-like. You even see them dancing with Mz. Ruby and they even get arrested by Carmalita. So you're turning people-like creatures that are recognized in-universe as being sentient enough to be arrested and tried for their crimes into a gumbo... Yeesh.
      This is just to say, none of this is a criticism. I love these videos and I plan to watch every single one of them. I just wanted to share my own thoughts after watching these videos. You've more than earned my like and subscribe, as little as it likely means!

      Oh I don't take it as criticism or ill-will at all! I love when viewers take the time to respond and share their genuine thoughts. These videos are by no means perfect, but just one imperfect man's thoughts on them - they will be full of different opinions and oversights no doubt. So I appreciate you taking the time to share some new perspectives and open my eyes a bit on things I may have missed. For example, the chickens being arrested is something that I never even noticed.
      Every like, and especially every subscribe means a ton to me. It means I've made something that people feel engaged by - whether it's in agreement or disagreement. And that makes me happy. Welcome to the community and I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts!

      @@nopnapnarp8047 I'd say what I didn't agree with was the final chapter. I agree that it may have been too short but I like the fact that the finale leaves sly and the gang scrounging as they aren't as well prepared as they think. I like that it puts them in some "now or never" moments like Bentley stepping up to save sly or Carmelita helping them. I think if the game built up more dynamic between the fiendish five then having clockworks level as it is would be more forgivable as you would get hints at the final member through his short chapter and then only see him during his boss. As the game is now I understand where you're coming from. (But yeah great job for your first attempt at this style hope to see more of it!)

    When you mentioned that the third episode contains some of the worst minigames, my mind went immediately to Piranha Lake. When I first played the game, that level had me stuck for a while. It was incredibly frustrating and I wholeheartedly agree that the minigames don't really add anything to the game. I really appreciate the level-by-level breakdown; I love these games and though it's been a long-ass while since I've played them, watching a fellow fan go through in such detail brings back memories and illuminates aspects of why I so enjoyed the games. Watching the Beast chase sequence reminded me how nerve-wracking that was for me as a kid, frantically trying to keep away from this inexorably-advancing monster.
    The fact that it returns, even just briefly, as part of the mid-episode gate is something I wish we'd gotten more of, honestly---an element of a level tying into stuff in the episode hub.

    I feel the EXACT same way about Clockwerk. Having a villain that has been alive for thousands of years SOLELY for his hatred of our hero’s family lineage warrants so much lore, even more so when other characters are introduced in the later games. Like imagine there was a scene in the third game talking about what it was like for the Panda King working with such a crazed over the top villain, let alone one who has affected Sly’s lineage since forever? I don’t even think it would be out of place considering the third game was about how Sly’s lineage hurt other people, and nobody would even compare to Clockwerk. I get it, they wanted to stay away from Clockwerk after 2 games with him as one of/THE main focus, but he has so much potential!

    • @nopnapnarp8047
      @nopnapnarp8047  2 месяца назад +2

      Yeah he really does have so much potential and it's something the series never fully capitalized on. In the years since making this series, I've reflected more on the ending of Sly 2 and become more unimpressed by it. We didn't really need Clock-La, there was still so much more to explore with Clockwork in his base form.

    Finally gotta around to watching this, and not disappointed.
    I’ve grown up with this series, mainly through the The Sly collection; and I’m replaying this game through the PS2 Version. The in-depth dive into each level gives me some new appreciation for this game, and highlight some things I didn’t take into consideration playing it all these years. Specifically with world building and some mechanics.
    I really don’t have that many criticisms, I pretty much agreed with everything you said about the game. The part where you showcased the music, the rest of the audio could’ve been muted to help hear the soundtrack better and maybe using audio from interview footage/the commentary could’ve helped strengthen some of your points a bit more.
    Overall, pretty good. As a fan this was really fun and somehow didn’t drag at all. If you ever do ones on Sly 2, 3, or TIT, I can’t wait.
    Panda King burying that village, makes his involvement in Sly 3 pretty uncomfortable now that I think about it.

    So let's talk about Clockwerk, his design is effective due as he turns the general character aesthetic on it's head, creating something more monstrous and for lack of a better term "Inhuman". His mechanical aesthetic gives him a Jagged and angular silhouette to offset the rounded shape of an owl. However this seemingly comes with the curse of being highly inconsistent in terms of visual continuity, With many aspects of his shape and more noticeably size changing significantly between appearances (his size in particular fluctuates like crazy between depictions in-game and cutscenes something that oddly enough carries into sly 2). There are bits of evidence circulating to support the idea his world was rushed, as the coins in his levels use a beta design that was otherwise scrapped due to being non-sensical.

      @nopnapnarp8047  Год назад

      Wow that's a lot to take in, thank you for sharing. You know it's funny you say that, because I did always notice how small he looks in some of the cutscenes versus how huge he is during the fight. I would have enjoyed seeing his world fleshed out more, that's for sure.

    So, I’m about halfway through and I have to say this is a really well-put-together video overall, and it’s obvious you have a knack for these longform videos. It’s awesome to see lively discussion for a game series I’ve loved since I was eight years old and continue to enjoy despite… Sanzaru.
    That said, my dude, I can’t stand for the Mz. Ruby slander. I agree with most of your thoughts on the game but this bothered me a lot. You’re well within your rights to not like it, especially since you’re playing the version that ruins the gimmick, but claiming it’s the worst fight in the game flat-out is just unfair. On the PS2 it plays like a dream and remains a major highlight of the game, especially after such a slog fest of a level. Meanwhile Muggshot isn’t fun to fight on any platform (joking, but not really joking).
    I know this video is old but I still think you overall did a great job on it, from what I’ve seen. It shows a lot of promise for your future endeavors. I’ll be watching your other Sly videos too, as soon as I’m done with this one. You’ve earned a like from me in the meantime!

    • @TanakaTheBuriedOne
      @TanakaTheBuriedOne 6 месяцев назад

      Edit: I accidentally went worst to best but oh well lol
      Interesting idea, I’ll give it a whirl! I place Muggshot at the bottom because honestly the fight never really made sense. Like, putting aside the melting guns, I don’t see how light reflected on him incapacitates him. Plus, the environment and his AI make it pretty hit or miss whether it’s a breeze or something straight from hell.
      Next I’d place Clockwerk. I’m not big on the jet pack and while the platforming section is solid it’s also pretty short compared to the amount of turret gameplay. Honestly the run up to him is more interesting and memorable than actually fighting him, which is a shame because he’s the mastermind behind the whole thing.
      Next is Raleigh. He’s a pretty good first boss, and I actually appreciate that he’s maybe a bit too fast to hit during his vulnerable frames. It adds a layer of strategy with how close you want to be while still dodging his attacks.
      Mz. Ruby herself takes the silver medal for me. The music is incredible and the idea of platforming to the beat while dodging is awesome. My only complaints are the lack of punch you mentioned regarding feedback and how damn slow her speech is. Voice acting wise, her VA did a great job but it makes starting over a pain on those occasions where she gets a lucky shot in.
      And yeah, who doesn’t love the Panda King? I adore his character and the fight is just no bullshit, run in and dodge him while giving everything you’ve got. It’s a bit short on repeat playthroughs because his attacks are well telegraphed and easy to dodge but still a blast to play.
      Side-note, I finished the video and I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Sly 2. I’ll give it a watch tomorrow when I get the chance. Once more, great work on this video!

    I don't know why it took three years for RUclips to show me massively in-depth reviews of my favorite PS2 games, but I'm glad I found them eventually.
    I don't understand why so many 3D platformers of this era felt the need to throw in a bunch of dumb minigames. It's uncommon that they're any fun, and even if they're entertaining, I would still rather be platforming. Especially with turret sections! It feels like almost every 3D platformer of the time had a turret section like it was required by law, and they're all horrible in every game. Why were they everywhere? If you're going to fill your game with awful minigames, at least be creative about it.
    Welp, time to go watch your review of Sly 2!

    Looooove these vids watched all 4 (twice) and they're one of the best storytelling classes ever! Makes me wanna make my own Sly reviews coz I'm nuts about these games. Sly 1 might be my favorite of the lot and I look forward to saying why. I will say this;
    The fiendish 5 are some of my favorite video game villains. Not as a unit, and the pages they stole from the book never made sense to me (like why would machine loving pirate wanna learn ninja moves and why would a fire loving martial artist wanna learn about old time german technology? They should've swapped). But thier music, design, personalities, abilities, and quotes are just so much more memorable to me. I feel, like with the sam rami spiderman films, the villains could chew the scenery and be over the top all the time. Mz Ruby is just soooooo entertaining! Even Dimitri doesn't dance during (alliteration haha) idol animation

    • @nopnapnarp8047
      @nopnapnarp8047  Год назад

      Wow I'm stunned someone watched through all these videos more than once. Thank you so much! It's always nice to hear from a fellow sly fan. That's awesome. I agree that the less mature, more cartoony vibe of the first game allowed the villain performances to go over the top and be completely zany, especially with Raleigh. Of course, they get more serious as you keep playing. Clockwork gets so few lines in that game, yet leaves such a strong impact.

    • @pastarhythm2762
      @pastarhythm2762 Год назад

      @@jadesgay444 I'm not sure if it's an issue of not enough time, but more likely just that they wanted to introduce the Spire Jump after the first world since it becomes a big part of the platforming later on, so Raleigh just ended up with those pages when he became the first boss. Likewise, the pages for the van upgrade had to be last to contextualize the turret at the start of the last world.

    It took me about 7 hours to beat this game for the first time recently(though I did go for all Clue bottles in the first couple levels) so it wasn't too short by 3d platformer standards since most of them tend to be 4-9 hours in most cases(though there are exceptions).
    I actually loved the shorter levels. I'm a big fan of both Crash Bandicoot and Sonic, so this game's shorter levels were actually more appealing to me than the way the other games tackled them(though I haven't played Sly 2 or 3 in years and definitely do need to give them another chance). That being said, the game is fairly easy for the most part but it has some very tough moments that I actually really enjoyed like the entirety of the final area(minus that dumb computer smashing minigame) and some of the third area. Though, the fourth area did feel too easy for where it was placed in the game imo lol

    • @nopnapnarp8047

      I think that's a pretty fair take on Sly 1 without a doubt. But you really should check out Sly 2 for sure! However, those games aren't platforming games in the same way Sly 1 is. A much bigger focus on missions rather than platforming through a level.

    I just finished this game as a part of a livestream series on twitch where I was showing myself getting my very first platinum trophy. I found myself disliking most of the mini games in sly 1 as I found many of them were poorly designed. Also because I was streaming this on twitch I had Music disabled so I wouldn't have any issues with copyright so I didn't actually have music in Mz Ruby's boss. I kind of had to eyeball it and even then it took me about 6 to 7 tries. This was also my first "Rhythm" based game I ever played where you had to press buttons to a beat, or for me a lack of a beat. Still I got the platinum but because I am a completionist I also wanted to go for master thief sprints. These sprints took a total of 7 hours. Admittedly, four of those hours I was playing like crap because I was sick and in those four hours I was only able to clear Raleigh's world and Half of Muggshots. On the one day I wasn't sick I was able to beat Muggshot, Ruby, and Panda King's world in just three hours. Honestly if I wasn't sick I may have been able to beat all of the Master thief sprints in one stream instead of three.

    I think minigames aren't an inherent negative, like video game reviewers seem to always think they are. Minigames can be fun and not an issue if done right, and I think Sly 1 does them right. I honestly love the ones where Sly rides the little gun speeder.

    • @nopnapnarp8047
      @nopnapnarp8047  6 месяцев назад +1

      I don't think they are an inherent negative either. I agree they can break things up, but if they don't fit in with the main feel of the game, than they stick out. I take exception to some of the mini games in Sly 1 because they seem antithetical to the thiefy/stealthy nature and atmosphere the game is aiming for.

    How do you feel about the new Sly 1 port for PS5? Frankly, I think its a perfect game to showcase the new PS2 emulator for PS5 by having the option to remap your buttons, add certain filters (my personal favourite is the “Modern Arcade” which gives every game that neat CRT filter), and also a new and pretty fun trophy list different than the PS3 version. Its not perfect as the menus do have lag and a few graphical glitches are apparent… but not locking it behind a PS Plus Premium subscription and only charging 10 dollars… I’d say its worth the deal. Really hope other beloved PS2 titles can make their way over with the new emulator too

    I love your videos but for shooter mini game for Raleigh's world. I know you were joking because you did say well I guess the game is going to game.
    But the reason why I'm pointing this out is you said that Sly could just go get the key. But the key was underwater and as it was already established the gang can't swim. (I find that dumb ASF because idk about raccoons but last time I checked Bentley was a TURTLE and Murray was a HIPPO. PRETTY SURE BOTH OF THESE ANIMALS KNOW HOW TO SWIM.)
    The second thing was how you were talking about mugshot and how you had to defeat him. Yes I know you were doing it in a joking way but the way you purposely pitched your voice higher was kinda cringe.
    But other than that all four of your critiques I love them. I'm not giving you hate I just thought it was funny on these two instances how you said something even though it was meant to be a joke😂.

    While I love the original…a deep part of me wishes that a developer went back, redesigned the game from the ground up to follow the style that 2, 3, and 4 did; have a massive sandbox style approach, and sort of included parts where there was playable character swaps. It would have made the game something much more likely to be replayed as they REALLY hit the nail on the head with how the structure of the series should go with 2, and I always wondered what it would be like to have game one play out similarly to 2, 3, and 4.
