  • Fire rated frames, doors and the associated door hardware (hinges, locks, closers etc.), some- times collectively referred to as “fire-rated assemblies” play a crucial role in life and property protection.
In this day and age, fire doors are available in a myriad of configurations - hinged, sliding, folding, with glazing etc.
The basic requirements for fire rated door assemblies include:
    • Fire rating, the main ones being 30/60/120/240 minutes, are granted by third-party testing agencies (for example - CSIRO) and are labelled on the products.
    • Fire rated door sets must meet the requirements of the applicable building or life safety code, such as the Building code of Australia and Australian Standards (AS 1905.1)
    • Fire doors should “self-close”, i.e. have a fire-rated door closer; and positive latching. This requirement means that every fire door must have an active latchbolt, so that when the door closes on the frame (jamb), the latch will engage. The latchbolt of a lock or fire exit type device would provide this positive latch. Deadbolts, magnetic catches, or electromagnetic locks would not.
    • The fire-rating of the door is usually dependent on the fire rating of the wall in to which the door assembly is installed.
