It's been nice. I remember talking to a friend of mine when I first got into RUclips, I was making about 25 cents to $1 a day and telling him how great it was and that my videos paid for my water bill.
You are not kidding. It's a job to give things away. We remodeled our kitchen and wanted to give away the old cabinets (perfectly good, just builder grade). My god! the ridiculous questions: "can you deliver them?" "can you install them?" "can you customize them?"
I think doing one room is a good idea as you'll then see some real progress after such a long time. It sort of gets disheartening when you've done so much work and nothing is finished. Major boost to your well being.
I know whatcha mean about trying to save too many things. A resource we have close by is a Habitat for Humanity ReStore. You can give them construction detritus like windows, fixtures, appliances, and furniture and they will sell them and use that money for Habitat projects. Not sure if you have that there. I hope you do. Best of luck!
Get a trailer-set up on side of house-store stuff in it-when done, take residual to habitat for humanity-start again. This is what we do and it keeps visits to store, minimal. Great job!
I was just about to call it a day, before refreshing my page and seeing that you uploaded a video like 20 seconds ago. Guess sleep will have to wait 30 minutes XD
You're 100% correct on the windows. I had some single pain windows laying around for close to 2 years outside. I listed them for cheap at first, then even for free and people still were kicking tires asking if I could deliver them for free at the last second. Ultimately they went to the dump and I made sure they shattered into pieces so no one could use them.
Ive been working on my house for close to a year now. 100 year old house taking it down to the studs and paying 100/% cash for everything and doing all the work myself. As I go along I take all my removed doors, windows, sinks, fixtures and even wood to the curb and place a free sign on it. It all goes within a day. Saves me a lot of time as well as money I would have otherwise spent to get rid of it all.
You aint joking that wood is expensive. I cannot imagine trying to build a whole house right now. We were fixing up our back deck by replacing a few boards and it was double what it normally costs.
When my hands worked, I used to do stained glass panels and loved finding old wood windows to use as the stained glass panel frames👍🏻 used the old window frames, removed all old glass and put mine back in thier place and built the designs to hang over the already installed windows with custom made hooks a buddy of mine did cool welding and mine was mostly herbs and spices for kitchen or custom if client asked for and did more than any custom designs for muscle cars for inside garages and the home. Am diverse a little. LOL so love old windows! The old glass is usually really good to use in the designs on stained glass. Thanks for the video as always!!! Have a wonderful rest of the week! 👍🏻☮️🤘🏻🙋🏼♀️
This was super satisfying to me. I can sense how all the looming small steps of this process add up to a massive ball and chain around your ankle. Best of luck sticking to your plan!
Renovating repairing and upgrading my little house it gets the same way I try to do too many trades at 1 time. Tools and material pile up. plumbing tools, framing tools, trim tools, flooring tools. If i dont watch out it gets in my way
Ohh this drop has made my day :D I had to sort out my house after a renter trashed it, and you start off with a plan...then you start and just about everything you start throws up something else..then you have a situation where you can't do one thing until you've done the other thing etc....I was trying to save as much as possible and in the end I pretty much had to take the house right back to the day it was built :( PS Love the music choice too
Ugh I can feel the drywall grit and dust and insulation debris just watching this. Takes me back to months of ripping out drywall and feeling like neither the house nor myself will ever not be dusty again...
Sounds like a good plan 👌. Great music and video. That house is so much more solid now. Love the references to the "concrete block" and "garden" in the basement that needs your attention. 😁 Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family.
FYI: A friend and I just tackled pretty much the same project you have, just bigger....it is WAYYYY more efficient complete all similar tasks at a time instead of 1 room at a time. You need different tools and materials for every task, hunting those down and buying them separately compounds every job. Finish all demo, finish all framing, finish all windows, finish all electrical, etc is your best bet. We bought a 3,000 sqft+ building in the middle of a town for $11,000 and finished renovation costs at around $140,000. (Subbing out electrical / plumbing(brand new furnace / hot water baseboard) / spray insulation) Your budget will look a lot better beings you do all of that yourself!
yeah but just being 1 person you get all those tools and materials just laying around the entire house. what he is doing right now is bringing everything, one by one up to the rough-in. after that he can do all the windows and all the drywall at once.
I sincerely appreciate how you are NOT afraid of hard work. Refreshing with the overload of all the before/after instant-gratification shows on RUclips and HGTV that fool young millennials and many wives into thinking every project can be finished in a couple of hours.
Too late now, but I wondered about just building out the wall in the bedroom with strips, so you could have just one smooth wall of drywall - that would eliminate one inside + outside corner. (I'm revealing my bias here in that I hate dealing with drywall mud and corners especially) Also will the building inspector give you grief about the one corner of that window over the stairs not having a stud right to the bottom? I know I know, remodel! Really enjoying this series, thank-you.
When I take on a job like that, I like to make a list of all the stuff that needs doing and stick it up somewhere with a pen tied to it to add more stuff to it and, most importantly check stuff off. It's a good motivational tool, not just a memory aid.
Thats a great idea. I like lists though lol. I think that could be an interesting addition to his videos too--we'll need something to fight after the concrete pillar is gone.
When I found out this was recently uploaded and not an old video - my heart sank...now I must wait to more results. Lol like reading a really good book and waiting for the next one to come out...great job, my friend!
It sucks that the window is over the stairwell like that. Gonna be a pain every time the renter goes to clean it. Not to mention, it can’t really be looked out of. Would’ve been cool to do a half wall there and keep the natural light coming in to the room from it.
Start at the top with the bathroom, then the bedrooms. Stairwell. Living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom. Then basement. And give all the 'saved' stuff to Habitat for Humanity.
Try making a punch-out list for each room and post it on the walls. Check the items off as you go along. Otherwise things seem more overwhelming than they really are.
Oh I’ve been doing like you in my remodeling. Little bit in this room little bit in another and stuff builds up😆. So now doing one room at a time. Good luck!
Gardeners use old windows to make cold frames. I mention it if you do plan to sell that would be an additional group to appeal to as well as stained glass makers and other crafters.
Like you told me, lost opportunity cost by dragging it out. I’m in the same boat, I’m going to finish my Tennessee farm house this spring, even if I have to hire some people.
If you do a curb alert/free as on FB Marketplace, they'll be gone pretty quick. I made $100 on a bunch of odd windows back in the Spring when I was cleaning out the garage. Guy was getting them for his wife to build her a greenhouse. I am so in love with this house, and it's a real treat to get to see you working on it. I think it's gonna be beautiful ♡
Dear Sir, I have been watching you from afar, and have refrained from bothering you with one more "comment", as I have enjoyed your struggles, your accent, your vision, your magical musical choices, and merely watching you work. However this video has confirmed something for me that I have suspected from the beginning, you Sir are a terrible contractor, but you are an amazing artist. This is not a house, so much as it is a large sculptural project. Sending you my best. Sincerely, Joseph Blanchette
Having something hanging over my head, waiting to be done but I'm just not motivated will eventually drive me nuts. I guess you are like that as well. Then you feel like a king when you finally tackle it!
Things look like they are going along well for you. If I may, the light over the stairs- once you sheetrock , the access to how you hang that light is going to be somewhat limited, even more so to any homeowner or renter who may be occupying the house who does not own a contractors hoard of tools; my suggestion is to either hang a light with very easy to reach and change bulbs from a step stool, change the lights to recess lights with led trims or to use shallow sconce lights at the top and bottom of the stairs (shallow as in they do not stick out far from the wall at all, there may be some LED puck lights that would work for that. Thanks for bringing us along on your journey through fixing this house and thanks for the videos.
I'm living in and still finishing the inside of of my new house build. I've been in a little rut lately getting motivated to finish. I have no where near the amount to finish as you do, but this video has inspired me to take your approach of finishing one room at a time instead of running around to different rooms. Thanks!
And make a list with a treat that you allow yourself each time you complete an item - basic motivation theory stuff but it does work as many parents can attest with gold star charts etc.
You got a lot done in 28 minutes....lol...Nice to know one room is ready and your onto the next and i am liking the one room at a time. Great vid, thanks
Your music choices in this video mimics what I hear in my head when I'm doing work... except for the occasional EDM/Techno drops. And grats on another sponsor! Squarespace... that means you're in the IN crowd now!
Hi man 👋 love the content and your channel!! I have some recommendations that might help you move a little quicker. Move in phases and not in rooms because eventually you get overwhelmed and frustrated about everything. I'm remodeling my multi family home and I understand completely. Best of luck 👍 ✨
I'm not gonna lie: I hope you are going to do a big FINALE video when you finish the house so I can sit here and drink a cold beer with you half way around the world.
In the upstairs closet could you frame back towards the window to make a higher alcove type area for a few built in shelves or a place for hanging shorter garments like shirts? When you enter the closet it would be on the left, obviously much higher than the current floor so as to allow for headroom for the stairwell. Just a thought.
“There’s this little concrete block I haven’t showed much of” and “take care of a garden down there”. I love your sense of humor.
Everyone upvote this one.
Have to admit, I chuckled at that
Love this guy!
I hit the 'like' button as soon as he said it! 😁🤣
As soon as he said that with a deadpan face I laughed.
Look at you getting those sponsors. Well deserved, loving these series.

I love your sarcasm and dry sense of humor. That little concrete block haha.

The entire soundtrack to this episode was awesome.

Dude plywood went up 24 dollars a sheet where I'm at.
@@WhatTheHeck1290 That's ridiculous...ugh
Double or triple...it's insane. Covid got them trees sickly expensive.

Not gonna lie, this is my favorite channel. I literally wait or refresh the feed to see your videos
