George Whitty here (the keyboard player on this ride!). What was actually happening on this tour is that Mike and Dennis had this little thing going where it was a bit of a contest to see how fast they could play this before one or the other crapped out. So every night it was faster. And after every night, Mike would say something patronizing: "Well, I guess that was pretty fast Dennis. I know you're trying your best" or some shit like that. And Dennis would just smile a little Mona Lisa smile and say "A'ight" and the next night it would be still faster. I hate to say it but we probably played it faster than this the next night. But absolutely PEAK MIKE; someone pointed me to this tonight and for all the time I spent with him, this still just makes me laugh out loud.
it is so honouring to hear this from you the very man i discovered through BRECKERS brothers tunes and since then always in absolute awe at your playing as well as Mikes..i love what you did Above and Below amongst others..thanks so much for this behind the scenes golden insight which we would never otherwise have heard about ..you and that band are just too good for words thank you again very honoured here in London UK
Randy: HOW FAST CAN WE DO THIS SONG MIKE??? Michael: I DON'T KNOW BUT I KNOW WE CAN NAIL IT!! 170 BABY!!!! Dennis: LET'S GO!!! THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT'S COMING!!! ONE...TWO...THREE.... Mike Stern: I'M NOT READY... lol
@DaMonster No, just 170. You see, while swing seldom uses 16th notes, funk is chocked full of them. But you'd be right to point out that 170BPM is as fast by funk standards as 340BPM is by swing standards. It's effectively the same speed, but the bars are felt differently.
so true i always use his tunes to warm up and learn more about jazz and jazz funk play a lot of his tunes by ear took me many years to remember them i have a few under my belt as a tenor player myself ..i am humble and just use them to better myself and inspire myself as you say to strive for betterment for thanks for bringing that to mind
Actually you are more right than you may realize about Randy. There is an interview of Randy talking about this very performance. He said somewhere during Mikes solo he became genuinely terrified knowing that not only was the tempo insane, but more importantly that he had to follow Mike’s killer solo that was brewing before his eyes. The interview can be found on The Jazz Video Guy channel and is titled “Celebrating Randy Brecker, my Brother Michael Brecker” (skip to the 07.55 mark)
It's just crazy, it's shocking the tempo difference, the barcelona one is already so fast but this one is just the FASTEST ever ! Brecker is INCREDIBLY incredible! Amazing chorus!
I'm not one for too much swearing on RUclips, but that is exactly the right sentiment for this amazing performance of an astonishing (at normal tempo) piece of music. How about a hand for the Bass player too!
Actually Randy is on record as saying the tempo on this particular performance terrified him, and that he was worried about how to follow Michael. If you look at his face you can see it. But he steps up, holds forth, and when he's done, it seems he's in a much better humor - with a couple jokes on the cues coming back in. So no, not completely comfortable. But yes, Randy is still a truly great musician.
It would have felt so good if Randy just relaxed and continued those long lush notes instead of feeling the need to compete with Mike. That would have been such a nice contrast.
Sorry. I forgot the band. From Pluto? Yes. Michaels older brother Randy on trumpet said not in an interview somewhere about this gig: Michaels playing was so good I almost lost that embouchure of mine. Thing. Not. But almost. Randy Brecker. I love You and I have seen You in Sweden many many times.
@santason1987 Agreed. I've watched this a hundred times and it still blows me away every time I come back to it. You can tell that Michael was really into that solo by his body language. Incredible!
Hey man, almost all of my favorite Brecker videos up here were uploaded by you.. I'm just curious where you find all these? And thank you for posting them!
Darn, I was trying to rate this video and started to click the stars up to 5 and when I clicked the first star, it rated poor. Yikes!!! This video is very most EXCELLENT!! Forgive me Michael. It's NOT poor! This video is INSANELY FAST!!!!!!!!!
Fast?? I saw these guys in 79' play it faster!!! Forget about rating? The rating is 10+ on a scale of 1-5!!! Mike Brecker is a F'in Genius, as well as his brother. You should ALL pay more attention to the notes improvised vs. the speed!!!

So cool, thanks for the story! I have always wondered about the tempo on this one!
Thank you so much for giving us Brecker Bros fans “behind the scenes” insight. And thanks for your contributions to this music we love so much.
George Whitty is AWESOME!!!

Mike even gave us a little choreography. He was playing so much crazy syncopated stuff and locked in the entire time. Just amazing.
Great ballad :-)))
Randy: HOW FAST CAN WE DO THIS SONG MIKE???
Michael: I DON'T KNOW BUT I KNOW WE CAN NAIL IT!! 170 BABY!!!!
Dennis: LET'S GO!!! THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT'S COMING!!! ONE...TWO...THREE....

xDDDD
If by 170 you mean 340!!!!

Michael certainly gave anyone who ever plays the saxophone something to strive for forevermore...

What the hell is Randy thinking at 3:11?? Probably realizing his brother's a motherfucking alien!!! I love 5:33!!

Exactly. Randy said you can see the look of fear on his face, lol. Of course, Randy sounds great on this too. It was insanely fast, wow.
Haha, Randy Brecker is even making silence sound cool at 5:30.. Thats real musicianship right there;)
It's just crazy, it's shocking the tempo difference, the barcelona one is already so fast but this one is just the FASTEST ever ! Brecker is INCREDIBLY incredible! Amazing chorus!
Yaass THAT IS MY F*CKING TEMPOO!!
I sometimes imagine I'm the third brother, just for the fun of it.
I can imagine that would be a nice feeling, I bet you play well.
or sister lol
Adopted brother, in my case lol
Sister works for me 🌈
The best sax player that's ever lived.
@JustAintThatWay nope haha on the list of history. He is the Legend
Agreed
They're playing this one like they're on the way to a fire. About 175 bpm. Crazy.
5:30, I didn't see *that* coming lol
Holy. Crap.....unbelievable....RIP Michael Brecker the greatest ever...
I'm not one for too much swearing on RUclips, but that is exactly the right sentiment for this amazing performance of an astonishing (at normal tempo) piece of music. How about a hand for the Bass player too!
I had to check to make sure RUclips speed was normal and IT WAS!!
Dennis Chambers is the MAN. God damn
I love the way Randy is snapping his fingers in the beginning of Michael's solo, so layed back.
Michael Brecker + pure adrenaline = this solo 🔥🎷🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
It's not sped up as far as I know. It is just ridiculously fast! I hadn't watched this one in a while. Michael's solo was just over the top!!
@santason1987 and the amazing thing is that they are completely comfortable with the insane tempo... truly great musicians.

The tempo here is completely brutal!!
Agreed! Scroll down in the comments for an explanation from George Whitty himself about the tempo on this one.
@@mobiusII Actually i read his comment on Facebook but thanks anyway

GREAT silenced break at 5:27
It would have felt so good if Randy just relaxed and continued those long lush notes instead of feeling the need to compete with Mike. That would have been such a nice contrast.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Nothing flashy just: "Holy fucking shit"
One time I did cocaine and I felt like I was on this song.
this is some sick bad-ass skunk funk!
My wife at the time used to love doing housework to this song with Billy Cobham on drums. A Funky thide of Sings
Sorry. I forgot the band. From Pluto? Yes. Michaels older brother Randy on trumpet said not in an interview somewhere about this gig: Michaels playing was so good I almost lost that embouchure of mine. Thing. Not. But almost. Randy Brecker. I love You and I have seen You in Sweden many many times.
oh look, nothing's changed... this vid is still amazing.
@santason1987 Agreed. I've watched this a hundred times and it still blows me away every time I come back to it. You can tell that Michael was really into that solo by his body language. Incredible!
Totally. Just when it seems like he was going to wind down he went on a blistering tear at the end of that solo. Just amazing.
Hey man, almost all of my favorite Brecker videos up here were uploaded by you.. I'm just curious where you find all these? And thank you for posting them!
this has got to be the fastest one yet! 176 bpm hahahaha
Hahahaha found it again!!! Hahahaha
incredible.
@ReminiscenceHr This made me laugh out loud :)
!!!!!!! And i though the original recording's tempo was tough to play at.
Fuck this is heavenly
lol they shouldn't have made Dennis count them in, i can imagine him going "MWAAAHAHAHAHAHA" before he did xD Poor guitarist is like ARGHH xD
Mike can play pretty fast. it's almost comical how quick they played it here, yet it sounded amazing!
burning stage!!!
Dennis 🔥 🔥 🔥
fantastic
holy shit.
lol
Chambers was playing with John Mc Laughlin in the mid-9-tees. Tempos and themes were even faster.
whoah.... it take me a long time to get the fingering that clean at that tempo lol
Darn, I was trying to rate this video and started to click the stars up to 5 and when I clicked the first star, it rated poor. Yikes!!! This video is very most EXCELLENT!! Forgive me Michael. It's NOT poor! This video is INSANELY FAST!!!!!!!!!
watching this at 2x speed for maximum swing
ジャズっていいな。
wtf is this version speed up? Compare this tempo to the Barcelona from that same year. This is really unbelievable fast
Randy said somehow it got counted off super fast, a little too fast to play the head. But, they sure tore it up during those solos. Amazing.
@santason1987 - Wow, 180 Bpm instead of usual 150-155.
Poor mike stern. Glad he held up.Every guitarist ends up with that one crazy band leader lol. The guitar players know.✊🏾
Non mais attendez là là!!Qui a déterminer le tempo, le batteur; ne faites jamais cela.
Oh, that's how it goes...nice!
Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had to make sure my video speed wasn’t set to 1.25
Looks like they are playing a tad too fast for the camera to keep up. Great vid nevertheless.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
3:53 😭😭😭
Up tempo Skunk Funk.. Why did Mike have to go?
Is this available on a cd?
The Language of Dialog of the music is so advance in thought , given the rate of timing ,but I can sing it , now what VISIONS can come to MIND

Is there a video on yt of that?
Hey any more info/clues you can give us. I'd love to track that down - a faster version!
Way too fast...sounds terrible at that speed.
