TBH even if I have no intention of sitting down to learn anything, the playing alone is so satisfying to listen to. Never ceases to be after all these years I've been watching.
I would try to learn it, but I just can't focus on what uncle Ben is doing or saying while turkey is doing turkey things. Like sleeping and doing nothing. And being ridiculously cute doing it
The thing about Petrucci, as opposed to some other progressive metal guitar geniuses, is that he sings melody through his solos. So much feel, so much language in his riffing.
Ben been watching your videos for over a year & have learned a bunch, but the soloing tip in this video were awesome. Thanks for all the knowledge and keep up the good work & Turkey cam.
Great video Ben. My son has just started getting into Dream Theater and we were listening to this album yesterday. Very under rated but one of my favorites. A truly unique album in the catalogue. I always loved this song and can’t wait to give this solo a try. The solo in Home is absolutely absurd. One of his best.
Stream of Consciousness is the height of badassness, but for the kind of lessons you like doing that highlight Petrucci's harmonic smarts, I'd recommend doing the Goodnight Kiss solo, which is really simple from a playing standpoint but beautiful from a note-selection standpoint.
PS: could you focus a little more on the theory of the composing side? Relation between chords and notes used on solos. That'd make it even better i think!
Hey Uncle Ben! First of all thank you for this great lesson. I'm pretty sure that the note ( 02:30 ) between bends is an A and not a D. Just my 2 cents. Greets!!
This one and Lines in the Sand are super killer, I love when Petrucci can reign it in for the whole solo...like there's a few fast-ish runs but not quite impossible for mortals, unlike the ending Octavarium solo or Another Day...even Pull me Under isn't too bad, they're all mostly melodic and "slow" but he can't resist adding those inhumanly fast runs
@@TheBfutgreg I think that’s why I gravitated to learning this solo. Plus the wah makes it even more expressive. Totally agree with him reigning it in.
Man, I'm really sorry for the spam! No, I'm not a stalking creep or something! :D But you always trigger my brain... My absolute favorite solo of all time (not just Petrucci solo) is from Lines in the Sand! Would love to see your version of this! :)
Haha, yeah! I just saw the title (while having my guitar on me) and immediately pulled it back out of my "lost" memories! Thanks for the reminder! :) Now I'm curious how you play it! After all those years, I seem to play it in better positions intuitively. But I have to practise it again for sure! :) Btw... I learnt it from the tab book 18 years or so ago. This tab book was pure dogs**t!
Okay. After the intro, I can already tell, you play it 99 % like me. But one note was not correct. At 37,5 seconds (the note just before the second half tone bend) you play B, but it's actually the A note below it (14th G). Believe me! ;) On to the video. :)
im admittedly distracted by the plus size rubiks cube thing? and the tiger stripes simultaenously...what are we talking about again? petrucci right? nice rg by the way.. i have an rg problem..but im seeking help. wow....no more coffee lol nice dog too👍 i will have to come back to this later when the jitters wear off
When Falling into Infinity was released, it was well, “different”. But it definitely grew on me. And compared to whatever they’re doing nowadays, it’s definitely more pleasing to my ears. As much as I love DT and JP, they’re in need of a good producer to stir things up a little bit. 🤷🏻♂️
Really just for you (because, I have a feeling, that you missed my comment below my own commet :D Oh man...)...: in the intro at second 37,5 (the note just before the second half tone bend) it's acutally an A note (14th fret G; 5th of the Dm-chord in the background, so "in-chord" ;)) instead of a D note. That's no crituiqs (is that a word? Do I use way too many brakets?!), but something you eventually prove right and be "thankful" for?!??? :-| Really no negative attitudes here at all! Best wishes!
There sure are a lot of great solos that he's put out over the years. A couple of favourites that come to mind are Under a glass moon and Overture from Scenes. Not one of their better albums imo but this is a good song, although that heavy part sounds very much like it could have been a Metallica song :)
I'm so back tracked when it comes to dream theater. This solo doesn't hit the feels for me like the end of octavarium that kind of wraps up the previous album's progressions. Would love a breakdown of that solo (if you haven't done it already). I love scenes from memory and then six degrees, those albums I always go back to. Octavarium kinda ended it for me
Ok Uncle Ben...Time for some more EVH. If I recall, and I could be mistaken, I thought you were going to do a deep dive on 5150? You know, almost no one on YT has covered that song, or at least in a reputable manner. So, just sayin'...how about some more Eddie.
I remember when i presented Dream Theater to my Godmother for the first time, back when i was getting into prog metal. I showed her "in the name of god" and her reaction was: when does it start. Now that my prog phase is gone i can see that lmao
Next time instead of step dad speed, why not do a "cranked up on speed" speed ? Kinda like running on the one 78 setting. And do an Yngwie solo. Myuh huh huh
Are you a lawyer or a surgeon or an oil tycoon? How do you afford all those expensive guitars man? Geez, I work my rear end off and I play a squier, and not even a good one, how about a donation to a fellow rocker?
@@BenEller I heard that, those suhr guitars aren’t cheap! I was just kidding my friend, keep killing it dude! Your the only RUclips guitarist we watch anymore, the dishonesty for money is really sad

Under a Glass Moon

Final solo of Octavarium .
Octavarium outro or Home
Definitely one of his most underrated solos. It’s unfortunate that Falling Into Infinity gets overlooked a lot. Great lesson!
Falling Into Infinity for me was the ignition for a since lasting and unbroken love for DreamTheater. Still my fave of all their records. ❤️
Agreed, This and hell's kitchen, pure gold.
Absolutely agree. Lines in the Sand has one of my favourite DT songs in general. Shit's just genius.

Wow. I learned this solo years ago by ear, and some of the subtle movements you did had completely eluded me. Great transcription Ben!
Finally seeing some love for this solo!! It's so ridiculously underrated both as a solo and as a song
NICE (to the intro solo play)
The Turkey cam is a truly inspired thing, love it!
The thing about Petrucci, as opposed to some other progressive metal guitar geniuses, is that he sings melody through his solos. So much feel, so much language in his riffing.
I recently got into much more Dream Theater and this song is one of my favorites without a doubt! Awesome lesson
Best guitar lesson I've seen thanks!
Way to underrated! One of his best wah moments! Turkey has a fantastic taste!

One of my favorite leads on the entire album. Great choice!

Great lesson and a great lick, it reminds me of GoT a bit.
Great job!!!
I feel like Turkey could definitely shred the stream of consciousness solo without breaking a sweat

Hi, great lesson sir, thanks a lot for your works with high quality and high reflection. Laurent
I remember hearing this solo the first time and I got so excited that I may actually be able to play one!
Ben! Thanks I've been waiting for someone to do this about JP/DT, you should consider making it a series, THAT is amazing content, do more please :D
PS: could you focus a little more on the theory of the composing side? Relation between chords and notes used on solos. That'd make it even better i think!
That is nicely done and that guitar is nice.

Uncle Ben could you do a big if not complete guide on the song ol'e nessie? Great vid!
Not only does uncle ben is flexing on his skills, but also the fact that he is a doggo lover
I miss John’s soloing of this era. Melodic with some technicality. Such a fantastic solo, off of a criminally underrated album.
Great lesson! Love your new co host 🤣
It's a great solo that targets the chords. I was wondering what scales or scale patterns were used in this piece.

At step-dad speed, it sounds more like an emotive rooftop solo from an 80s movie or something.
I said if on Instagram I’ll say it again here. The day there’s a fatal tragedy solo break down would be the day I find inner peace
