    great illustration sir. Being from a non coastal area it is really difficult to visualize all such phenomenon. thanks.

    Twas surfing the entire month of August in SoCal (South Orange County/North San Diego County) and the water went from cold/cool 64 with a wetsuit to a fun, trunks, and tropical 80 degrees... It quickly dropped back to around 65 and during the entire course of the water getting colder and colder the winds were blowing fierce (as this video describes); which help me gain a better understanding of this near-shore/off-shore phenomenon. Thx

      Really?
      If we are looking at eachother, and I were you, and you were me, would what you see be me or you?

    This is a good basic explanation but I believe it’s leaving out Coriolis force and Ekman effects which will change the wind direction

    • @pepparmostheelder
      @pepparmostheelder 3 года назад +1

      Yeah this is not the best explanation for how it works in the actual seas. Here he uses the wind to blow perpendicular to the coast when in reality its the winds traveling along the coast in combination with the coriollis and ekman that causes the water to move away or into the coast (depending on if the wind is southerly or northerly and location the earth)

      @@pepparmostheelder why do winds blow along the coast? I understand the coriolis aspect

      😂 that’s even easier to show in an in class demo. I’d love to see how your class begins by starting with basic concepts and how much your students actually understand…

      as i understand, the coriolis effect is already happened because he was using california coast line which is west coast. coriollis makes wind bends to the east or west from its actual travel direction, which is from north to south. cmiiw

    Kindly answer my question? Why does pelagic fishes follow in the ocean currents?

    • @MrMoose123
      @MrMoose123  4 года назад +2

      Upwelling currents bring up nutrients for plankton to use for growth, These plankton support the base of the food web including pelagic fishes.

    What about winds parallel to the shore?

    • @pepparmostheelder
      @pepparmostheelder 3 года назад

      This is a sort of odd demonstration in reality because it doesnt take into account the coriollis effect and Ekman - which are key reasons to understanding upwelling in an actual marine environment. But short summary, its actually the parallel winds that cause this phenomena in the oceans. The water does not move in the same direction as the wind due to those effects.
