  • From St John's Town of Dalry to Moffat, the GB Ultra's Scotland 50 race follows the Southern Upland Way for 56 miles across the wonderfully remote hills and countryside of sothern Scotland. I have ran this section of the SUW in the past as part of the Race Across Scotland, but it is a very different race because of the increased pace and the fact it's usually dark when I reach St John's Town.

Great effort Ross, well done on fighting off those demons. Still a gold medal finish, even if you were taking it easy! As always, great video.

Fantastic mate thanks for sharing. You really showed us how bad you were feeling today and you could actually see it. But you still managed to soldier on. Well done mate. I'm taking direct inspiration from this into my next.

On the climb out of Daer Reservoir, I genuinely considered I might have to get out the foil blanket and curl up into a ball. Was not a pleasant experience but I just got my head down and focused on the finish line.

Great film Ross..love seeing the suw in all its glory and toughness..really inspiring to see your determination despite the struggles you where having..after all you've done this past few years you've nothing to prove to anyone and the future can be whatever you want it to be.. your rapid rise through the distances to the expedition ultras is remarkable..you and other runners inspired me to try stuff that was beyond me and sometimes I managed to get to the end and sometimes didn't but learnt some wonderful lessons.. ultrarunning is a tough event and whilst it offers the most possibilities for runners to explore ourselves the price is high because there's nowhere to hide out there in the middle of the struggle..you're young enough to take a break and come back to races whenever you want ..there's something magical about ultramarathons ( for me) that whatever the outcome of a challenge they made me a peaceful more resilient person, a better dad and husband, and able to deal with everyday life problems in a much less hassled way.. and you can't put a price on that.. it's what life and running is all about.. it’s a pilgrimage.God bless you Ross.. and good luck which whatever comes next.. 💙

Must have been something about that day and that race. Coming out of that last checkpoint I wasn't feeling too bad but then by the time I as halfway up the hill next to the reservoir, everything seemed to fall apart and had a worrying walking spell for about 6 miles, where my heart and chest felt awful and I kept getting dizzy. Think it was a fuelling issue maybe for me that day but seemed a few people said they struggled there. Definitely was tougher than I was expecting. Love your videos.

@@AlunMurch yeah I reckon it was one of those races where I didn’t get fuelling right. It’s a faster pace than RAS so burning much more calories. Those hills are brutal when you’re trying to go up them quickly.

Never give up Ross! You've packed so much in over the past few years - time to pick and choose.

You are clearly good at ultras but you shoukd be selective and not overdo things. Enjoy your running, don't put yourself under pressure, do the odd parkrun etc if you want to.
