  • Amy Winehouse 'What Is It About Men' | North Sea Jazz (2004)
    Date & Location: SUNDAY 11 JULY 2004 • PAULUS POTTER HALL • 00:30 - 01:45, Congress Centre, The Hague, The Netherlands.
    LINEUP
    Amy Winehouse; vocals;
    Bradley Webb, drums;
    Pete Cochrane, bass guitar;
    Sam Beste, keyboards.
    Amy Jade Winehouse (14 September 1983 - 23 July 2011) was an English singer and songwriter. She was known for her deep, expressive contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul, rhythm and blues, reggae and jazz.
    This is one of Amy Winehouse's first performances in the Netherlands. At the time she was makIng a name in her home country and not yet the star she was to become in later years. This is how the organisation positioned Amy for her 2004 performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival:
    AMY WINEHOUSE:
    The young Amy Winehouse from North-London is one of the new, twinkling singer/songwriter stars. She doesn’t only have a remarkable, hoarse voice, reminiscent of Lauren Hill or even Billie Holiday, she also displays a form of straightforwardness that is typical of these modern times. Let’s make one thing clear: Winehouse may be only twenty, but her subjects are a lot wiser and more explicit than those of your average One Hit Wonder in the charts. She commands a lot of different styles as we can hear on her debut CD Frank. From seventies soul and modern R&B she goes straight into jazz classics that she gives the sweltering soul ballad approach. All in all, this wayward singer with a lot of grit in her is a newcomer to cherish. And what will she sound like live?

    It's incredible how years can pass, but something new always appears about Amy, she only lived 27 years, but she lived intensely every moment.

    When you think about how young Amy was when she wrote this it’s mind blowing. She was a genius in her generation. I’m always flabbergasted due to her song writing skills. She gave us some truly unique gifts.

    This is her GREATEST performance of this song, (including the album version), due in great part to the REMARKABLE arrangement. Nothing else like it.

      And the only perfomance of this song as far as I know. Yeah it's superb! Kudos to all the musicians

      She did a lot of gigs in 2004. If she stuck to a pre-arranged set list, she more than likely performed the song at other venues. There's just no audio/visual proof at present. Fingers crossed someday there might be.🤞BTW: Are there any clips floating around from any of her 2005 gigs? She apparently only did 6 gigs in 2005.

      Amy preformed this song in two other gigs in 2004. Liquid Room in Edinburgh. November 11, 2004. Manchester Academy. November 13, 2004.

      @DmPmRr1959 wow thank you! I really had no idea about those gigs. As far as 2005 goes, unfortunately no footage has arisen from that transition period between Frank and B2B 😢😢 can you mention those 5 perfomances?

    Just saw the movie it was a disaster! This girl was much more and the movie was ridiculous i can feel in her music. She has the ability to stay alive even after her death, she’s still with us, and everytime you hear her music you discover new things about her. She’s everything, she needed people to help her cuz she gave everything to them. That’s what happens with beautiful souls like hers, she was too much for this ugly world and God took her because the world didn’t deserve her. I love Amy and I feel a connection with her wich is weird but still magical. Rest in peace you beautiful soul. Wherever you are now you should know WE LOVE AND WORSHIP YOU.

    What breaks my heart is the meaning behind the lyrics. She KNEW her behaviours. When it comes to men and relationships, and probably other things too.
    “My destructive side, has grown a mile wide”
    So sad it had to play out this way for her. She was her own spiritual genius. RIP Amy. ❤️

    Understand once he was a family man
    So surely I would never, ever go through it first hand
    Emulate all the shit my mother hated
    I can't help but demonstrate my Freudian fate
    My alibi for taking your guy
    History repeats itself, it fails to die
    And animal aggression is my downfall
    I don't care 'bout what you got I wanted all
    It's bricked up in my head, it's shoved under my bed
    And I question myself again: what is it 'bout men?
    My destructive side has grown a mile wide
    And I question myself again: what is it 'bout men?
    I'm nurturing, I just wanna do my thing
    And I'll take the wrong man as naturally as I sing
    And I'll save my tears for uncovering my fears
    Our behavioral past is thick over the years
    It's bricked up in my head, it's shoved under my bed
    And I question myself again: what is it 'bout men?
