If I understand correctly, Eli actually attended the abandoned school they used as a set. So when they sing about “the past is gone,” they are literally sitting in the ruins of Eli’s past. Kind of intense.
Mortius did a reaction to this and had Cesar on video with him. Lots of chat, what's going on when, the high notes those guys reached were high G and G# at the top of the treble clef. Cesar said that Omar is his best friend. Might be worth it to hear what Cesar had to say.
I love that Layne can swallow a helicopter. Dietz did We're Good (Dua Lipa) which was Cesar's final audition for membership. It's amazing. This old high school is Eli's school back then.
I heard this done by Aerosmith in concert and I love what Voiceplay did with it. This brings attention to the version done by Aerosmith and makes you appreciate just how good Voiceplay is. Someone said that Geoff called this Warriors 2 and wasn't sure if they bit off too much doing it. They didn't and nailed it. You did a great review. The THX catch was a good one. I smiled when I heard it originally.
Thanks once again for your thoughtful and heartfelt comments. The people from patreon were just talking the other day that it's criminal that their "Wicked" medley seems to have been much less successful than a lot of their other recent videos (in terms of youtube views) and were trying to figure out why that was. That was also one of Geoff's arrangements, and he said it was years in the making, and was always subject to change depending on what the final line up of singers was going to be.
Sometimes it's unfortunate what the RUclips algorithm works off of. Their Wicked Medley was outstanding and deserves all the praise considering all of the hard that went into the arrangement.
I don’t know much about Rob Dietz other than that he, Ben Bram and Avi Kaplan created the A Capella Academy. It is a camp for very talented teens to learn the many aspects of the music world, collaboration, harmonization and many things I know nothing about. The campers, who come from all over the world, are selected by an audition process. Many of them are given scholarships funded by activities-special live streams among others-throughout the year. Two groups that have come out of the Academy are Citizen Queen and AcaPop Kids.
I'm way old and was busy with other stuff in the 70's, so did not know this song. I love Voiceplay's arrangement and presentation of it. I went back and watched the original and don't like it as much. VP put so much emphasis on the lyrics, so it's a better song. Haunting, harrowing and hopeful all at the same time. There were no special lighting affects in this one. They walked (with permission from the owners) into the abandoned high school on the day of the shoot. figured out where they were going to place each person, swept up the broken glass on the floor and shot it with the sun coming in the windows. Except for Layne in the basement, don't know what camera light was on him there. Behind-the-scenes access is great. I appreciate your reaction to the music and your analysis of the videography, etc. Thanx! Subscribed.
This is going to be a busy morning watching all the reactions. Now better music. This was filmed in an abandoned high school that was also used in a horror film. Arrangement: Rob Dietz and Geoff Castellucci. Love this.
I agree about the lighting. With all the natural light coming in from the windows, you have to know what you’re doing to keep it consistent. Really good work, whether it was Eli or someone else. Also, can we talk about Eli’s acting? All of the others are top notch actors, but over time I’ve realized that Eli brings something really special. Just compare his characters in Hoist the Colours and My Mother Told Me to the character here. The first two could have been played pretty similarly, but he gave them very different qualities. The pirate has that Disney villain vibe going-a guy who really has fun being a crazy baddy. The Viking seems more legit scary-there’s a snarl in his expression, and a sharpness in his movements. The character here has this sadness around his eyes-seems soul-deep. The first couple times I watched this I was actually wondering if something was wrong IRL. I got my BA in theater with an emphasis in acting-we had a couple like that in my University. If they showed up to audition we all knew we weren’t getting those parts (which is why I know a little about lighting and props and sets-I worked way too many shows from the other side of the curtain). You’re also right about Geoff’s subs. That earth-shaking scale while all the other guys are up in the rafters-it really holds the whole thing together beautifully. Word is, Geoff says he realized he couldn’t take this arrangement on alone (which he probably could, but the humility is likable), so he brought in Rob Deitz. I’ve seen the man’s name in a few other VP credits, but don’t remember which songs. His CV says he worked/works (?) for the Sing Off, so that might be where these guys met him. As always, loved your reaction! I hope you caught Geoff’s premiere and that I can look forward to your reaction to that soon. (If you think THIS blew out your subwoofers, just wait!)
It sounds like it was more that Geoff didn't have time to take on the full arrangement because VP was performing a corporate gig in a different state in mid-March. Fully agree about all your Eli comments - he's amazing!
Some of Eli's sadness might be real - the ruined building where the video was shot was his high school. He is a good actor (in addition to the ones you mentioned, his role switching in Bruno is also top-notch), but I think some of the emotion here was actual emotion too.
Great reaction! Some info on the video: it was filmed at Eli’s old high school. At one point there had been a horror movie filmed there and there an old dentist chair with fake blood on it. Many people made the same connection with the THX sound. There was a camera crew on this shoot, they are the same guys they normally use on their other shoots.
That part of the high notes is also my favorite. And, don't you think that every time they collaborate with Omar, Eli shines? Well, it seems to me because of all the videos in which they have collaborated with him.
This is being referred to as Warriors 2.0. The story is that the zombies came and captured Earl and J. Then they found Omar and Cesar wandering around and gathered them into the band and they’re ready to do battle again! Good catch on the THX. It’s been driving me crazy where I heard that swell of music before. I am one of the older people watching and listening and didn’t really pay a lot of attention to the Aerosmith version. It just isn’t my thing. But I do remember it. I went back and checked and to me this is so much better. I like being able to hear and think about the lyrics because it’s a beautiful piece of poetry . I loved in the behind-the-scenes getting to watch them all get trashed up and deciding where each person was going to sit in this post apocalyptic setting. You really need to go watch Geoff’s newest. As a film person I think you’re really going to enjoy it. As a viewer I loved it. So much emotion. I know he has a background in acting because theme parks and all that, but this is on another level. And I love the tone of his deep deep vocals in that one. If you watch and react to it could you please explain how the heck he can sing and make words understandable when he’s so so deep. Looking forward to your reaction to that one as well.
They're never long enough are they? We never want it to end. Sigh. Geoff has a great new one out today. It was filmed in an old school from where Eli grew up. Not sure whether it was his school or not. Could be.
I absolutely love your breakdowns of everything they do - You give a really unique perspective to the cinematography that I don't hear other places. I don't know if requests are sponsored for you, but I'd really like to suggest Voiceplay's "Trapped (Billie Eilish medley)" and "Panic! In four minutes" (part 1 & 2) - Trapped is a prequel to Panic, and both are spiritual prequels to their "Queen" medley. There's a lot of acting in both of them, and I thought you might be interested in "Trapped" especially, as it's very much set up as a horror short!
Someone else compared the crescendo the THX. If you listen to the original, it also pays homage to a passage there. I love this version even better to than the original. This one really features the words and voices.
Wow, I haven't gone through many of your videos you've posted before I became a Patreon member. I love Voiceplay's cover of this song and I love your review. The song brings back memories of listening to Aerosmith on my 8-track during H.S.. Thanks, Jeff.
Pretty sure Geoff arranged this masterpiece. Look up Cypress Fyre. An acapella trio with Chris Rupp. They did an amazing acapella version of Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing". Totally blew me away. It's on RUclips. Saw it posted from ChrisRuppOfficial channel.
I'm loving Geoffs (and Rob Dietz) arrangement of this. The harmonies, slides and runs are wonderful. Not sure what else can be said of Geoffs earthquaking notes, they are felt as much as heard. As for Layne, he's ridiculously good but that sound made me think of scuttling insects, cringe! Thanks for another great reaction! 🙂👍
i think rob dietz.....was the arrangerfor voiceplay's cover of 'We're Good' Cesar's debut in voiceplay, before he became a permanent member.....Eli's old high school......>^^
You flashed "Jeffrey" up on the screen instead of "Geoff". I know you're all about self-promotion, because your names sound the same, but get his name spelled right when referring to him. Geez..........
I just found out that that last HIGH Note isn't Omar it's Cesar. Said so himself on Mortius's channel.
Absolutely crazy! What a talented singer and performer!
If I understand correctly, Eli actually attended the abandoned school they used as a set. So when they sing about “the past is gone,” they are literally sitting in the ruins of Eli’s past. Kind of intense.
That's a really cool story! A little Easter egg for the music video. Makes it all the more powerful.
Mortius did a reaction to this and had Cesar on video with him. Lots of chat, what's going on when, the high notes those guys reached were high G and G# at the top of the treble clef. Cesar said that Omar is his best friend. Might be worth it to hear what Cesar had to say.

I am just amazed that they can keep topping themselves!
Right?? The innovation never stops!
I know‼️ I keep wondering where else they will take their music.

I'm glad you enjoyed the reactions and took something away from the video. Yeah, VoicePlay completely made this song their own!
I felt the same way. Loved this version and had to go back and compare to the original. VP did it better, in my aged opinion.
The first thing I thought was Layne's new helicopter sound is WILD. XD
RIGHT?! Absolutely crazy!
This is going to be a busy morning watching all the reactions. Now better music. This was filmed in an abandoned high school that was also used in a horror film.

At least I wasn't the only one that made that same THX connection 😂 Eli's Old High School had some fun scenery!
@@JeffreyHackReacts lol 😂
Rob Dietz also did the arrangement for VoicePlay’s versions of “We’re Good” and the short “Halloween Singers Go Psycho”.

Hi Janet! There are more reactions to Geoff Castellucci coming to the channel soon 😁 A man of many talents!
This was a great arrangement. So interesting and great vocals. Thanks for your reaction
Hi Tracy! Thanks for watching 😊
If you don't change the time I will be sure to watch your premier after I watch Geoff's Premier.
