Sam's comment about whether it is still you inside has more background in the game, where you encounter infected people crying in the dark before they spot you.
It's heavily implied they are conscious enough to cry, but unable to control cordyceps as it causes to attack other people, which makes it even more horrifying.

Omg there's one part in the beginning of the game where youre sneaking and there are 2 just standing in a room in the dark and the cries and wails are FREAKY AF like you said it's like they are crying inside I was like NOPE and took a lil break 😂
Also the first time you encounter infected after the time skip there’s one attacking and eating a person while attempting to scream “I’m sorry”

@@jackson_carter pretty point to point. So far the show has been quite faithful to the game -- there have been some changes but minor things-- mostly this show expanded on things. Like we never knew who the rebels were in the city. Just "raiders" didn't have all that backstory.
Sam also wasn't deaf-- bit of a change there but it worked out great.

@@rocovailo2862 they expanded on character development and made the action sequences more realistic, but less frequent. They could have fleshed out the show with a little more action imo, but it was still amazing
also the way Sam sat facing aaway from Ellie, knowing that he wouldn't get triggered by sounds in the night so wouldn't hurt her.. JUST KILL ME NOW HE WAS SO CUTE AND KIND WHYYYYYYYY

Might also be because the fungus likes the sun as seen in episode 2 where they were all crowding in the sunlit area of the road. So infected Sam sits facing the sun.

The guy that got his head ripped in the infected scene is actually the voice actor that plays Tommy in the game, and they even put the actors that play Joel And Ellie in the game also in future episodes.
That is such an awesome detail they did!

The really sad thing is that Henry wasn’t thinking when he shot Sam. He just reacted. Then add in the fact that Sam is the only person Henry has ever killed, it is just heartbreaking. 😭
They were all so shook and sad about Henry and Sam that they forgot to talk about the rest of the episode. 😂 Especially that whole scene with all the infected and Bloater. We definitely need longer discussions for episodes like this.

I believe this is the halfway point in the game, Henry and Ellie's acting at the end deserves an Oscar, the terrifying screams of Ellie was heartbreaking and Henry's reaction, despite being quite simple, was so impactful, Henry's reaction was definitely better than in game, in the game was still quite sad, Henry broke down in tears but here, his still traumatized face was definitely a better acting choice.
Henrys acting was some of the very best seriously
That moment when he looks back to Sam's dead body and he looks like he's about to puke (at ~ 18:53) looks so real. Insane acting.

I think your perception of Ellie to me tells me they did a good job with her character, she’s meant to be an annoying 14 year old kid who grows on you and develops and is forced to grow up throughout the course of what she goes through and I feel like as much as I love the game they made her as palatable as possible and it’s pretty obvious she’s a child being portrayed by an adult to appeal to adults playing the game and nit annoy people as much as she should have, while in this they really leaned into the fact that she’s a child and you can really tell she is with the way she reacts to things and processes her emotions compared to the game. Idk I really liked that aspect of show Ellie I think that was a selling point for me was just how genuinely childlike she is in this.

I love how Ellie is designed to be a character that grows on you, for both the audience and joel. I think Ellie genuinely believed or convinced herself to believe, she could save Sam. Heartbreaking and also essential for her character and understanding her motivation/values as the potential "cure". This episode is HEAVY and ellies scream when Henry shoots himself breaks my heart everytime. Bella Rmseys performance blows my mind every.single.time. They are so beyond talented and bring so much vulnerability and realness to Ellies character.

I think Ellies written this way by design in the show, its borrowing elements of Abby in Part 2. You don't like Ellie at the start because Joel doesn't like Ellie, when Joel starts to warm up towards her.. you start to warm up towards her. Great writing.

@@TEETHHHHH Her actions early on in the game tainted my view of her for the whole game. I don't think the game did a good job making her likable either. They definitely tried, but it came out as forceful which further made me dislike her.

It’s interesting how Sam and Henry mirror Bill and Frank, not generally, but insofar as one (Bill and Henry) loved the other (Frank and Sam) so much that they couldn’t go on living without them. Like love kept them going in the world, and became their whole world.

Some takeaways from this episode:
- Henry and Kathleen were both prepared to sacrifice the “greater good” for the one person who mattered to them, their brothers.
- Henry did it knowing it was the “bad guy thing”, and Kathleen did it knowing it went against what her brother wanted.
- Joel was and still can be a killing machine.
- Ellie is scared of ending up alone.
- Ellie wants her immunity to help people, but she doesn’t know how it works, and so far people have only died to help her because of it.
- The first person Henry ever shot, let alone killed, was the one person he sacrificed everything for.
- Absolutely *_anyone_* can die in this show.
- Joel is regaining his humanity while Ellie is losing her’s.

I don't know which one of you said it but yes Ellie and Sam should have told Henry and Joel about the bite. However I understand why that didn't happen its very child like thinking, Ellie and Sam wanting it to work and not even thinking to tell Henry and Joel. Ideally Henry and Joel would have been told, they could still try the blood thing and if it didn't work out at least Henry and Sam got to say goodbye.

The Last Of Us is the only game I've ever played that has got me to cry. Seeing Henry's shock after shooting his own little brother after sacrificing everything for him made me tear up imagining me and my little brother in that situation as I would do anything to keep him alive. No movie, show or game has ever hit me as hard as this game/show.
Probably one of if not the best written game/show of all time.

Ellie isn't meant to be liked right away. She is supposed to grow along with her relationship with Joel. We as the audience are at the same place as Joel regarding her. When I first played the game I didn't like her that much. I liked her snarkiness, but she was annoying. Then somewhere along the way my feelings changed and there wasn't anything that I wouldn't do for her. I want to say something more but I'm worried I might spoil some things.
Another fantastic reaction. The guy that played Henry did really well. Sam also. I wouldn't mind seeing both of them in other things.

For Henry, Sam is the world to him. So it was really gut wrenching to see his little brother die. I got teary-eyed watching this episode. And the young actor who played Sam is also deaf and such a sweetheart (from the behind the scenes episode) that it made it even more emotional after watching it again.

This is one of the best episodes of the season. And it still hits even after knowing it’s coming.
Every loves Ellie pretty much immediately (in the game at least) because up until her introduction, the game's tone was suffocatingly dark. She was the first bit of comic relief, like a breath of freah air after drowning in misery for the first hour or so.
It's great to see the writing got y'all to come around with Ellie. People forget that her characterization in the game is different because you, the player, are supposed to be compelled to protect her from the very beginning. With a television series it makes more sense for her character to have a more drastic arc over the course of the season because of the more detached nature of that medium.
This episode had me in tears the entire runtime. One of, if not the, most heart-wrenching moment in the show. Great reactions!
Well said. At the same time, game Ellie was made immediately more likeable as a character to counteract escort mission characters being notoriously unlikeable at the time. Comparatively, show Ellie is (by their own admission) “kind of an asshole”.
The scene with Henry and Sam in the game hit hard but here it went to a whole nother level. It's so amazingly acted. Y'all are right, it just feels so real.

Towards the beginning of the series when we first see Boston they take a little girl into custody. They test her and she’s positive. If you look in the background I believe there is a poster that shows how long infection takes depending on where the bite is.

The big infected is called a bloater and ik the game but started crying when I saw Sam bc they made him younger. The actor who plays Sam is deaf so it was a change from the game and made it sadder.
1:50 - This makes me so happy. I was so offended for Ellie lol I totally get the stereotypical "sparky punky kid" trope too - but I think Bella killed it. Just masterful acting
Also - Everybody felt the same way about Ellie, but also realize how much time in the game people spend with her in between these big moments. small, unnecessary banter. fighting infected and raiders the WHOLE way, then this shit happens. obv you can't really get that from the show because nobody wants to watch full episodes of just sneaking around killing things so they just advance plot. that's why people defend her so hard.
Alsoalso - pretty sure i read tests on the cordyceps (which the infection is based on) showed the insects KNOW what they're doing, but can't control their body
which makes this whole concept that much more terrifying and sad.

Ellie being unlikeable at first is definetely intentional because they can develop that relationship over a season of TV show. In the game, you start liking her a bit earlier but that's probably because videogames are not a passive medium. You feel empathy much faster since you're in Joels shoes and have to protect this little girl. It's really weird seeing the comments being surprised at you guys for not liking her at first but that's probably because they already like her from the game.
Oh and glad you guys loved Sam and Henry, they were my favorite characters from the game! It's also more depressing when you realize Henry never killed anyone before 😭
