Man my dad had one of those (old Bell-Tell) International pickups. Thing I'll never forget as a 15year old kid some trucks have a little "L" stamped on the wheel studs. Left hand thread. Drove that truck all over the farm.
Congrats! Sounds great, seems to run well. On one of my IH medium duty trucks (345) I replaced to the points based distributor with an electronic ignition. Made a huge difference, especially the mileage. In my case, the entire distributor was replaced with a Crane racing distributor (that's what was specified). On some models, there are conversion kits instead, replacing the points with the ignition module and pickup coil and so on. Good stuff.
Thanks. It has been running great after some tweaks to the carb, a timing adjustment and a new vacuum advance. I'd like to upgrade to electronic ignition and maybe Holley Sniper fuel injection in the future.
Man, I just came across this series you did and binge watched it over the last few nights. I recently began restoration on a Scout II with the 345 and although I’ve owned and worked on quite a few, this level of detail and explanation will be priceless for my upcoming journey. Much appreciated and awesome to see these things staying on the road!
That's great! I'm glad the videos were useful to you. I have a few other videos on my channel featuring work on my International and I'll keep adding them as I do more projects on the truck. Good luck with your Scout.
Toolman , You are a really smart inspired man , paying attention to detail . You did a great job on the video series of your truck , I really enjoyed it . The old Binder couldn’t have gone to a better man . American Iron all the Way ! Thanks Again and God Bless You and Your Family.
Thanks. I was expecting a lot of people telling me I should have kept the buckets. I'm probably in the minority, but I like the look of a bench in a truck.
Thanks. I'm glad to have it up and running again. I'm took it out for a longer drive today and made it with no issues. Gotta build my confidence in the work slowly.
That is a bit of a time commitment! Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm currently working on bringing a 49 Willys pickup back to life. I've got a series running right now on that project.
@@TheToolmanTim My friend has a 48 Willy's that he found in a pasture filled with hay for the cows...he has had it many years now with several people asking if he will sell it but, he never will. I now tell prospective buyers he will probably be buried in it...

@@TheToolmanTim Thanks. It's all original. Love those old IH trucks. My first vehicle back in high school was a '67 Scout. Been kicking myself for 35 years for selling it!
Since I made that video I rebuilt the carb, swapped out the starter and set the timing. It ran great after those last few tweaks and I was able to drive it all summer and even showed it at the Gear Heads Get Together in Maple Lake, MN in August. My winter project is to replace front and rear pinion seals and all three seals in the transfer case.
Thanks. I was going to rebuild it, but changed my mind when I saw one of the mount points on the block for the bell housing was broken off. (See part 4 around the 15:30 mark). It's just sitting here as a parts donor for now. I'd consider selling it, but it probably needs to be gone through. It had some blow-by and may need cam and bearings replaced. Let me know how to get in touch with you if you're still interested. Also, I talked to the guy at Windy Hills Auto Recyclers in New London a couple years ago who said he has good running 345s available for around $700.
@@TheToolmanTim- thanks for the reply. The broken mounting point is disappointing, for both of us. I have another source I will check with, thanks again.
Hello Toolman, I too have a noisy lifters in a 345 in WI. I heard some of the new lifters are made in China and manufactured incorrectly inside. Did you take apart the bad lifters to compare with the original? I am curious as I do not have the original lifters anymore.... Thanks! Nice work! Any idea where to buy a good set?
I still have my old lifters, but haven't done an autopsy on them yet. I got my new lifters through Rockauto.com. I ordered the Sealed Power HT855, but the order was cancelled due to an inventory count issue. I then reordered the EngineTech L945. I did a little research on EngineTech before I reordered and it turns out they repackage other manufacturers stuff, but I couldn't find out who actually made my lifters. I've been happy with them so far though. I have only run about 30 miles since getting my truck back on the road, so time will tell.
Toolman, did you do the high rpm break in when you swapped in the new lifters and use special break in oil? I am wondering if I need to do the 20 minute high rpm break in period if I swap a few lifters like you would with a new cam and lifters? Thanks!
@@MrBdiggiti Let me start by saying I am not a skill mechanic, just the shade tree variety. I didn't do a high RPM break-in or use special oil. I used assembly lube when I put everything together. One important thing to do on an IH V8 is pre-oil when the engine has been sitting a long time or been torn down and reassembled. Pre-oiling can be easily done by pulling the distributor and using a drill to spin the oil pump.

Cool! I wonder how many left hand threaded wheel studs have been snapped off over the years by fellas who thought they were right handed?

Nice work, sweet looking truck

Glad to see it back on the road! 🙂👍 Nice job replacing the lifters. Hopefully they won't give you anymore major trouble. Take care 🔧
So far so good. I've driven it for almost 3 months since replacing the lifters and it is running great.
very nice video . i also have a international pick up . i love it
Thanks. What year is yours?
thanks for this video series. wonderful to watch. great attention to detail and that is a beautiful truck. good on ya.

Set the timing at 9 degrees

Right on! Great video
Yep you have the dreaded lifter tick. I think you gotta get the adjustable rockers and get a touch of preload in there.

Beautiful truck!
Thanks. I jumped over to your channel to see your Dodge D100. Pretty sweet truck too.

No, I didn't have to. I just ran it for a while, drove it a bit and it quieted down nicely.

Where do you live?? Is it like 10 miles from paved roads??
I'm in central Minnesota. I'm only a couple miles from the nearest paved road. It's totally worth the dirt road drive to live in God's country🙂
