Thank you for this video Brad. your video was recommended to me by several people after I posted an orchid haul video.. I bought one of these orchids and had no idea what to do with it. it looks like it's starting into its growth cycle.. I hope in time I can switch it so it's active period is in the spring/summer... but I will roll with it for now.
Such a wonderful orchid and I cannot seem to find a mature one in stores :( guess I'll try my luck with a baby, hope you'll find some other varieties as well, maybe try orchid shows, they always display them there
they look nice here we have a few large large vendors that carry lycaste orchids, buy they are always expensive, may get one eventually, you grow them very well!
Hi Brad. Finally you made a video about Lycaste orchids. I just love them, they're my favourites, and I have a few more than you do: aromatica, skinneri, skinneri 'alba', Highland x Auburn, consobrina, Sunray, deppei, x groganii and my newest - Libra. They're pretty easy to achieve in Europe, but you should be able to get some too. I know Ecuagenera come to USA on tour (for shows) every year. You can pre-order some plants and make them send you, once they're in USA - all paperworks done. That's what I'm going to do. They come to Europe in fall, and they have some beautiful orchids in their collection.
Jewell orchids out of Colbert Georgia has some amazing orchids you might take a liking too. I've been around orchids for 15 years now and he has things I've never seen before. And probably one of the finest fellows I've ever met
What does it mean when the bulb shrivels? I repotted yesterday when I recieved it in the mail. It was plump and today it looks wrinkled so I watered just a little bit more but I hope that wasn't a mistake don't want to rot the roots
Brad, I am so glad I found this video of the Lycaste! I've ordered in my first one and it's a Red Jewel. Good to know about the needles on the bulbs. LOL I wonder why you can only find yellow? You're in BC, I'd think you could find them by the rainbow of colors there. :) I'm in Winnipeg and I c an get Red anyways. lol
If you're interested in shipping from the other side of the country, Cloud's Orchids has a near blooming size "Lyc Zombie Maiden" that looks very nice.
I have a question. I have one of the grow chambers, a mini greenhouse, just like you have. But i have a problem, it doesnt keep humidity in it. I keep it outside where it faces south, but i was wondering why it doesnt keep humidity. And also where did you get a shade curtain at? Thanks.
the problem with humidity is that warm air hold more moisture, so as the temps go up, RH drops, so you have to add more. That is why my foggers kick on in the day time as the temps go up
***** umm these have no leads. i think there might be some dormant eyes but i really don't know. these are definitely back back older backbulbs without any lead growth.
I have a lycaste.impulse buy :).it's flowers are about twice the size and colour is off white.I don't know it's name.all I'm left with is two bulbs.and it dried off.I wasn't sure what to do so I just hoped it survived .one bulb is dried Brown the other still green.I can't see any roots but about a month back it suddenly grew a new shoot.does it mean all these while it was resting?? Is the timing a little off since it's already May?
Great video and beautiful orchids, this is a random question but, can vanda orchids be put in water culture? Thanks! :) Ps, too bad there are only one variety of lycaste orchid near your area.
Are you sure they can't ? I can ship them to you from there though. Let me know if you see anything you like.. My first real greenhouse is going up in a month. :)
at the Toronto Orchid Show this year i saw a few dark red Lycaste orchids, the flowers are not big, massive i mean it! here is a pic with the label and see the difference between the ribbon and the flower: i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn253/fifitza01/Toronto%20Orchid%20show%20Feb%202014/label.jpg what i also saw kind of weird there was an orchid called "anguloa" it had buds at that time but the plant and the buds were huge! a pic of that: i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn253/fifitza01/Toronto%20Orchid%20show%20Feb%202014/IMG_4382.jpg
My lycaste and anguloa do not bloom 😒 all they do is grow huge bulbs and leaves and that's about it. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, there is plenty of sunlight every day
Thanks for your videos! That is the national flower of my country Guatemala.

i got some random lycatse back bulbs. have you ever just potted up a back bulb and see new growth?
Yup, it is just that easy, as long as there is an inactive growth point to start growing. The old back bulbs don't even need roots.
***** umm these have no leads. i think there might be some dormant eyes but i really don't know. these are definitely back back older backbulbs without any lead growth.
***** they aren't brown, dried out or dead. i have success with other types of back bulbs but never done it with lycatses.
***** i wish i could post a pic with close ups around the base of the bulb
