Great video as always! So I just bought myself a masdevallia nidifica, and generally when I get a new plant from the store, I like to repot it. Now I am debating if I should : 1. just swap the sphagnum and keep it in the plastic pot it came in 2. use a net-pot I have for a little more airflow to the roots 3. mount the orchid on a clay-tube I have with some sphagnum, to provide constant moisture supply through the reservoir 4... A Frankenstein-Version of 2 and 3, generally planting the orchid in the small Net-Pott, and kinda mounting the pot on the tube, to give the roots more space, and some moisture without risking constant "wet feet".
Nice, was actually looking for something like this. I bought an old Masdevallia that quickly withered, but I saved three leaves with about a cm root each. I potted it in a mix of regular potting soil and orchid bark. It now has 7 5cm leaves with 4 sprouting after about 6 months. Next time I'll use some moss, so thank you, hopefully it can regain its former glory :D
Masdevallia's are such beautiful Orchids, thanks so much for sharing how to care for these beauties Brad and sharing how you divide and re pot :-) Sending you heaps of love and happy growing from Ireland and have a BRILLIANT weekend XXXX
Wow, it was surprising to see how few roots such a healthy, happy looking plant actually had. I am still trying to find what works for me wrt growing masdies, you certainly have figured that puzzle out! I grow indoors and am suspicious of sphagnum, I seem to be either able to keep it way to wet (and roots rot) or too dry...maybe I should give it another try - plus I think the moss you have is better quality than what I have tried.
Liked you’re video very much. I have one masdevallia striatella. Do you think it will grow well if I mount it on a piece of cork or should I keep it in the pot?
Hi Brad, I am new to using perlite. Can I use it straight from the bag or do I have to rinse it under the tap first? I tried using a sieve under the tap last time I potted it and half of it went down the drain. Just want to check if the dust is harmless for orchids as I know you like dry mixes you might use it straight from the bag.
Hi, I know this isn't a carnivorous plant video, but I was wondering where you get your plants from. Also do you have any suggestions for smaller sized butterworts flytrap/pitchers and sundews. Thanks for your time.
It IS strang but when repotting some of my masdies, I've noticed that some of the best looking plants had the worst root systems? If I had used 'my way' that plant would have wobbled all over the place. Next time, I'll have a go at 'your way' - it works better (might have to practice a bit to judge the right amount before putting in the pot).
Hi Brad. Great explanation. I’ve just ordered my first 3 masdevallias. I find your video very helpful. Thank you my friend.
Thank you, I learn so much from your video!!
I'm amazed by the healthyness of your Masdevallia... just beautiful plants! :)

Can you repot your Masdevallia's in live sphagnum moss?
