Making a fuse tap for my starlight headliner

  • I bought a starlight headliner kit for my personal vehicle and I don’t want cords laying around in the open. I plan to place the light engine in my trunk so I got the separate extension cord you see me cutting that works for my kit. I spliced the fuse tap to the power cable and I soldered a connector for my ground. I cut off the plastic that comes on the fuse tap and ground connector because I prefer to use the heat shrink. Thanks for watching. I am gonna do my best to record me installing the starlight headliner and try to have a video sometime next week. . Again this is for my personal vehicle. Wanted to record the process🙏🏽

Nicely done, good to see you using fuses. If you'd like I can share with you a taping trick to make that electrical taping at the end much faster.

I want to do something similar, but with the addition of a two-way toggle switch that I can manually flip to shut the headliner off. How could I go about that? I still want to use a fuse tap.

Nevermind, I got it worked out. For anyone who might want to attempt a similar approach:
      1. Cut the car charger end off the plug that goes into the projector box; strip the red and black wires inside.
      2. Plug your fuse tap into your car's fuse box in a slot that only comes on with the key so you aren't draining the car battery when the car is off. I used the radio fuse.
      3. Grab your two-way button. The red wire you stripped goes directly to the outer prong on the button. (Usually labeled 12V)
      4. The black wire you stripped goes to ground.
      5. Wire the fuse tap to the middle prong on the two-way button.
That's it. When you start the car, the lights will come on at the same time as the radio. If you want the stars on your headliner off, you can simply flip the switch that you wired. The radio will stay on either way.

@@con_fettihey man for step number 2 how does that work if you don’t mind me asking?

@j3ss383 A fuse tap (sometimes called an add-a-fuse) has two fuse slots on it. When you open your car's fuse box, you can remove any fuse you want and plug a fuse tap in its place. For my car, I unplugged the radio's fuse. Then, you take whatever fuse you removed and plug it into the BOTTOM of the fuse tap. This makes sure the thing you unplugged still gets power. The TOP slot in your fuse tap powers any accessory you want. In this case, we're talking about starlight headliner, but you can power anything you want with a fuse tap (aftermarket fog lights, LEDs, light bars, whatever). Every fuse tap has a red wire that comes off the top fuse. This is what powers your accessory.
The reason I chose the radio fuse, is because I know the radio turns on when I turn the key on, and off when I turn the key off. Some things in your car stay on while the car is off (like your alarm system). If I wired into that, the stars would stay on even when the car is off, and kill my battery.
